Deflecting from Bryant's core point I know but re his mum's means of hiding her vodka in plain sight I'm bemused by the reference to 'everyone' having an avacado stone on cocktail sticks. I've lived long enough to see endless 'fashions' come and go but this is one that must have passed me by.

This refers to the technique used to get avocados stones to sprout so you can grow a plant. You're meant to have half the stone in water and the other half dry (for unknown botany reasons), which is fairly easily achieved by sticking cocktail sticks in it so you can sit it on top of a glass of water.

No idea whether this was ever a 'fashion' – the first I'd heard of it was a few months back when my partner tried it after her friend told her about it. Didn't work.

Probably regional/class factors involved – based on the age he mentions, this would be from the mid 70s on. Can't imagine there were many avocados flying around most parts of Edinburgh and its surroundings at that time.

Dunno if it counts, but I believe avocado was a very popular colour at the time for people's bathrooms.
