View Full Version : Scott Brown/John McGinn

He's here!

Just looking at the pics on the BBC website of Brown leading Aberdeen out today made me think about how different a career path he picked to John McGinn, who at one time looked odds-on to follow him to Celtic.

Clearly Scott has had a fine, long career with a barrowload of medals, but I retain a sense of disappointment that he never gave England a chance. I never felt he went on to truly fulfil the immense potential he showed at Hibs, either at club or international level. John's move to Villa, on the other hand, has elevated his game to another new level and he's probably one of the most valued players in the Premier League, not to mention being by far the Scotland national team's most important player. His future looks tremendously exciting.

The sports science and nutrition folks at top English clubs will be world class, McGinn was always a physically strong guy at Hibs, but his strength and conditioning since his move to Villa is next level. The quality of teammates and opposition has also likely been a driving factor in his significant improvement.

Scotland's best player right now IMO and the one guy that as a Scotland fan you hope does not get injured.

I’m fairly certain you won’t see John McGinn lying pished eating a kebab in the street anytime soon.

Being a weegie, he probably prefers vinegar to brown sauce so he can gtf as far as I'm concerned.

I absolutely loved Brown at Hibs. Class act. I think he could have quite easily gone to a top club in England at some stage. He chose to stay in Scotland and I think he'll be pretty content with that choice.

I’m sure I read that family reasons played a big part in Brown staying in Scotland. That says a lot about the man as a person if correct.

I'd take either of their careers in a heartbeat, they've both done extremely well for themselves and chose the paths that were right for them at the time. Chapeau to both!

I'm a big SJM fan but I'm not sure either comment about him in the OP is correct. One of the most valued in the PL and by far Scotland's most important player?

As for Brown, idolised with a huge tally medals, and played against the best in Europe regularly. I think he'll be pretty happy.

I think if I were to have either of their club careers I'd probably have picked Browns (2016 Scottish cup win aside) at the moment.

FFS. Better watch out he doesn't end up at Hearts. They've got chips.

They've. Got. Chips.

played against the best in Europe regularly? he was papped out before xmas regularly whilst SJM is playing against teams making the last stages of European comps or actually winning them in his league fixtures

I love broony and I dont think hes had a poor career but sticking it to teams like Hamilton 4x a season when he could be down there playing against the worlds best players every week earning 3/4 times his Celtic contract if hes not even the slightest bit envious that it could have been him id be very surprised

Been a fan of Brown before and after he left but his comparable level of achievement is competiting at the highest level he chose to, if he'd fancied leaving celtc, who knows but I'd venture to suggest that generations aside our man McGinn has already left him in his slipstream and who knows what's next? You couldn't say that for Brown who was content at celtc.

FFS I thought it was grammar and the lack of a proper education

McGinn is a better players than Brown ever was. Brown was a great leader, character and really got into the oppositions head, but technically McGinn is the next level.

I genuinely think SJM could play for any of the top teams and make an impact.

I’d still love to have seen how Scott Brown would have turned out if Celtic had used him more positively. He was such a dynamic forward thinking player with us before he went there. McGinn has much more to come and while he may not win as many medals as Brown - for obvious reasons - I’m sure he’ll have a much better higher profile career.

Maybe so but personally, i will never forget the young Scotty terrorising defences, especially with the devil streak in his hair plume.

Always feel like Brown had more to offer than what Celtic got from him playing a deeper role. As above, he was such a positive player for us.

Yes it was because his sister was very sick at the time (and then sadly died). For very understandable reasons, he chose to stay close to his family rather than move down south.

It does mean that we will never know how he would have fared in the EPL, so hard to make a direct comparison with SJM’s career.

Ignorant folk will continue to say that Brown was somehow scared to test himself down South though.

This and he was engaged and his missus didn’t want to move. They got married in Cyprus.
