I found this very interesting, the UK Government has protected several new species including octopus, crabs as sentient species, so have the ability to feel pain and loss. The implication that we are likely to notice (well, the wealthier among us, anyway) on a day to day basis is boiling alive of live lobsters will be outlawed. Probably other classes and species in the natural world are ‘sentient’ but currently unrecognized as being so.

To me if something does something to survive or thrive then there has to be something guiding that...How we can decide some animals are fit to slaughter or kept pregnant then make up crap like its done as humanely as possible just doesnt sit right with me. Animals suffer a great deal at our hands and to gloss over it by classification has to change sooner rather than later.

There is evidence that trees produce ‘warning’ chemicals that transmit messages through soil and root systems to other plants. Which in theory is also a form of sentience/awareness.

Yeah and mushrooms have chats https://bigthink.com/surprising-science/plants-and-trees-communicate-help-each-other-and-even-poison-enemies-through-an-unseen-web/...So much we dont know or we just ignore to suit our own desires. I'd say theres a difference between something that can suffer compared to something that its just biological/chemical reactions to the situation.

The largest living organism is a single gigantic specimen of honey mushroom (Armillaria ostoyae), discovered in the Malheur National Forest, Oregon, USA, which occupies a total area of 965 hectares (2,385 acres), equivalent to 1,350 soccer fields. The honey mushroom is well known for its glowing surface, caused by bioluminescent bacteria, although most of its tissue is around 1 metre (3 feet) underground, in the form of root-like mycelia. Its age is calculated to be at least 2,400 years old, but may be as much as 8,650 years old.

It also holds the record for the world's largest fungus.

Another fungus I've experienced is Serpula lacrymans. Dry Rot fungus, when I was involved with the renovation of 109 tenament flats in Camelon, Falkirk. I walked into one ground floor flat and it was like walking on Nescafe coffee granules. The fruiting body ( mushroom) was in a cupboard and the mycelium (roots) of the fungus were traced back to the roof space at the other end of the street.

Fungi are amazing, and terrifying in equal measure!

My wife talks to her plants.

Are cactii sentient beings? If so, they must be really rude, cos they never reply.

She’s right to do so. Pumps co2 into the plants, and good for her mental health (although possibly not yours judging by the tone of your post :greengrin
