Or is it Mrs doctor Budge maybe giving us a wee bit of advice about running a football club again?

Like she did the season she won Hearts relegation.

It's a strange one to me.

On the face of it, I like each player that has resigned.

But I think we need freshening up. This team is stale and it looks like we're going to have it for another 2 years at least, all be it with a few more additions hopefully.

I'd have been more excited to see some players leave in January and new ones brought in.

This just feels like a safe, boring option.

See what you are saying & agree to an extent, we already know we have two players coming in when window opens & fully expect others to be signed. However, they will be to supplement the better players already here & imo the 3 extensions do come into that catagory.

A good week.
The two best starters whose contracts were up at the end of the season have signed up for another 2 years.

That leaves the focus firmly on the contract of Porteous.
18 months left.
Either signs an extention in the next 6 months or Hibs will be desperate to move him on in the summer.

...wonder if McGinn will get a new contract

Allan, Gogic, Wright and Gullan and possibly Hallberg are toast

Mackie could get get a cheeky 6 month deal
Murphy deal must be in the balance. Might get offered a year on reduced terms.

Much change in the summer including McGregor eased into the non playing ranks.

As things stand we have 16 players for next season including 3 goalkeepers.

I'm sure, no, I'm certain that if we could sign other players, we would.

Getting the in-house business done this early is very shrewd. It pre-empts any possible speculation about our players and the possibility that they might be tapped up nearer the window. If anyone wants Doidge now, they'll have to pay silly money, by I think he's our player for the next couple of years at least

Now, the recruitment team can focus all their efforts on securing new players in January and I would guess that they've already taken action in that respect.

I doubt there will be any last minute failures this time.

As some will know I'm not his biggest fan but accept what he brings to the team and he's been a big loss since his injury, he's pretty decent for this level and and a contract extension is thoroughly deserved, happy with this news.

I still think we have a bit of a conundrum in having two strikers that are better with a partner but not to the detriment of Boyle. In getting all 3 on the park. 3-5-2 seems the best formation for the squad we have IMO. However not sure where that leaves Mueller or how you get all 4 in regularly.

This is the problem we've got with the current squad.

You play to Nisbet and Doidge's strengths - where do Murphy and Boyle fit in?

If you play to Murphy and Boyle's strengths, what do you do for striker(s)?

You play both strikers and both wide players, how to you avoid getting overrun in the midfield?

We had that one game with Doidge as the central striker, Magennis pushing up in support with Boyle and Murphy out wide and it was the best we've played this season, albeit against the team who are currently bottom.

We've had Murphy and Boyle throughout our recent miserable run where we've not looked like scoring so I don't think them out wide (with a fish out of water as a lone striker without Magennis pushing up) is the answer.

Interesting to see what Jack Ross does. Some good players in there who just haven't clicked together or in the way we've been trying to play and he needs to find an answer.

FWIW - imo the crazy, gung ho 424 mentioned above isn't without merit.

At the season start I think a few were resigned to Doyle-Hayes being a short term deal as that was how he seemed to operate and would look towards the next move. This is a pretty long deal if it’s 2025 and I hope it leads to improving performance as he had gone off the boil a bit, maybe missing Magennis.

8 current 1st team squad players out of contract in the summer.
McGinn, Murphy, Allan, Gullan, Wright, Gogic, Hallberg and Mackie.
The first 2 are current starters, the next 4 are on the bench and the last 2 have been injured.
Kensell is rattling through the contracts now with 4 players renewed this week which is unheard of.
Given that momentum I think he will be putting big pressure on Porteous and his agent to make a decision on a new contract in the next month.
I reckon McGinn is favourite to get a contract extention next.

I agree re McGinn. He has just turned 31. Him and his agent will push for a 2 year deal and he might get it.
All the deals announced this week have been of the right length IMO other than the JDH one which i thought was a year too long.
The 4 benchers are definitely gone.
The 2 injured guys have 6 months to impress and stay fit but the odds are against them. Likewise Murphy especially on the staying fit front.
As ever we have to lose players to free up spaces for new players.
Next summer is a big transfer window for Hibs and Ross. It will see all Hibs players either signed or extended by Ross meaning it is his wholly his team.
Hibs and Ross will sink or swim at that point.

McGinn i'd keep, the rest i'd let go. If Murphy and Hallberg were cheap, i'd probably like them to stay, Murphy on his day is good, he has missed a lot through injury, and he's one of those who is likely to keep breaking down the older he gets.

Hallberg has been a good squad player, and we always need good squad players, but i think he wants away?

That's pretty much where I am.
McGinn 1 or 2 years
Murphy on reduced terms if he can stay fit
Hallberg I like but he can't risk being a bencher for another couple of years.
Mackie will be cheap and they may give him a 6 month deal to see if he is over his injuries. Potentially he could be Doig's replacement but it all hinges on his body holding up.

P.S. I missed Gullan from my list. Reckon he will go to Raith on loan in January and permanently in the summer unless Kilmarnock decide they are interested.

That whole covid business a few weeks ago looks to have maybe taken his big chance from him, which would be harsh.

Sometimes those situations are the making of a player - they get their foot in the door and they are determined never to be squeezed back out.

Didn't know that.
21 now, might earn himself another year to see if he can bridge the gap but with a half dozen starters to come in this summer he might find himself down the queue again.
What level would you put Josh at currently? Raith Rovers? Higher or lower than that?
