The last remaining founding member of the SDLP in Northern Ireland has died. A giant of the civil rights movement in NI and widely credited with triggering it's development and growth after squatting in council houses that had been allocated on a discriminatory basis. He spoke out against the oppression of Irish culture post partition. Like Hume he was fiercely supportive of Irish reunification but rejected violence as the means to get there.
