View Full Version : What is going wrong for us this season?

We are Hibernian Football Club, arguably the third biggest club in the country. We comfortably finished third in the league last season, but we haven't built on that success and on recent form look like we'll be lucky to finish this season in 4th or 5th.

It's true that the Premiership is probably the strongest it has been for a long time, with Hearts and Dundee coming up and some of the dross (Hamilton) going down. This season we should have been cementing our position as a top team in the league, and trying to push for second place. However, some of our performances have been very poor and we are 9 points behind a mediocre Hearts side that have just come up from the Championship (though we do have games in hand).

It's hard not to compare Dundee United's two recent trips to Edinburgh. We didn't muster a single shot on target against them, yet Hearts put them to the sword yesterday in front of a packed Tynecastle.

What's going wrong this for us this season, and how does it get fixed?

Injuries to key players, get them back and playing well we'll be fine but we need them back asap. Decent additions in Jan also. Still think we'll make top 4

You mean you don't think we're MagicHibernian? 🤔

Wouldn't say it was a mediocre hearts side they are decent but I think we have a better squad than there's when we want turn up 🙄.

We've had a nightmare of a summer window which has allowed our main rivals to catch up and even overtake us in one window.

Disgraceful backing to the manager this summer and it might end up costing him his job unless we limp on with a few okay results until January then spend at that point.

Injuries to Doidge and Magennis have been important too of course but we should never be 1 striker or 1 midfielder away from going on the slump that we've been on.

Poor, or lack of, recruitment during the transfer window left us vulnerable to injuries in key positions.
As was pointed out by many on here at the time.

Small squad, injuries to key players, playing a formation that doesn't suit the players.

Players back, a tactical tweak and a few bodies in and we go from being one of the poorer teams in the league to being one of the better teams again.

We are not at our best at the moment that's for sure, It was so much easier when the mighty hearts were in the lower leagues, never heard or seen a peep from them, since they all came out in the streets weariing colours in a vein attempt to stop beating relegated, it was hilarious.

Well we could be like Hearts and make a complete mess of our business , get relegated and then have a sugar daddy give us £5million a year to keep us out of administration. That should do the trick. It's magic.

Put simply....
For me, it's our home record. That needs to improve quickly.

The team should be coming out and having a go at teams which in turn gets the atmosphere going and generates momentum etc etc.

That being said, I hope this thread doesn't descend down the usual rabbit hole.

Yep we've lost two more points at home than Hearts -this cannot continue.

We needed a quality forward and centre half more than we got in the transfer window, virtually everybody called it out - including the manager.

That said, we’d be in a much better position without a fairly horrific run of bad luck with injuries and illness. Doidge was in a great scoring run, Magennis was flying, JDH and Newell had clicked in the midfield, and Boyle started the season superbly.
Nisbet’s form falling off a cliff really hasn’t helped either.
You also have to look at the manager’s performance which has been far from stellar the last few weeks.

The answer to your question may be in this opening passage.

Hibs are not the 3rd biggest club in Scottish football. You suggest that it is arguable? But it’s not really.

Our gates and trophy haul are lower that Hearts. We also have considerably less success than Aberdeen.

I think it would be fair to say that, we are the 5th biggest club in Scotland. And so when accepting that as a reference point and using it as a crude short term method to predict future outcomes, being 4th certainly would be lucky and 5th a reasonably safe prediction.

It’s good to have aspirations for our club. But any expectations of regularly being between 1st and 4th don’t really have much logical basis in the real world.

It’s a bit early to start making judgements with the season barely 25% in?
There are issues - recruitment; recent performances and Covid 19 but far too early to make any judgements
Maybe at New Year when we’re half way through would be a good time to reflect

No. It's the right time. After we've played everyone once is fine. Somebody beat you to identifying an arbitrary point in time for reflection and I'm happy to run with that one.

Injuries. Failure to strengthen in the transfer window. Failure to advance our young players enough so that they can contribute in the event of injuries. Loss of form of key players.

Win our two games in hand against Livingston and Ross County and we’re only 3 points off the amazing and title challenging hearts.

Poor recruitment in the summer and unlucky injuries has left us struggling.

There’s really not too much to it IMO.

A couple of poor results doesn’t change things massively. You see it all the time in Scottish football, St Johnstone last season were going to kick on last season and finish 3rd, Livingston were also going to get above us after martindale came in.

It’s the first time out with the top 4 in 18 months or so and I don’t imagine we’ll be out of it for long.

Aberdeen, Hearts and Dundee United will all considering themselves the 3rd biggest in Scottish football. It doesn’t count for much and then along with Motherwell always compete for the top 5 or so. That’s not even mentioning St Mirren etc who are also strong.

It’s a very tight and competitive league, it’s inevitable we’ll go through dips in form and results.

Dreadful football! We haven’t moved on from the SC against St Johnstone last May. Tippy tappy rubbish culminating in nothing hence the lack of shots. We are 9 points behind the jumbos with two games in hand but given our ineptitude in front of goal, I don’t think we will pick up much from those games.

Three posts in and the OP posted this nonsense - I honestly have no idea why anyone responded to this obvious trolling. Glad to see he was mutually terminated regardless......

Yep an incredible number of new posters in last month or so who seem to know all about our ills and happy to compare us unfavourably with Hearts.

If the OP has been launched and this thread is such an obvious wind-up, then why hasn't it been deleted?

Because sometimes the replies can open up decent discussions and it's worth giving it a chance to see if it goes anywhere

A pretty poor effort from the maroon balloon. 3 posts before getting punted must be a record

I know, there has to be a lot more subtlety when doing these things. Piss poor effort really.
