View Full Version : Preparation for semi final

Is this the worst preparation we've ever had for a semi final?
4 straight defeats, loss of form, injured players, Covid infections, isolations, training disruption, 3-4 week lay off without a game and some players away on International duty.
Guaranteed Hibs win.:greengrin

Possibly but Hibs are usually at their best when we are up against the odds.

Apart from the time we had loads of injuries before an Edinburgh Derby and then sold our only fit striker after the UK window shut, days before the semi.

Bring SDG out of retirement. Off the bench for an injury time corner.

Not sure if cause for optimism but last season we started all our Hampden matches as pre-match favourites so... 🤷🏻

A The rangers squad who had never heard of covid were dead on their feet after 80 mins in May 16 having not played for three weeks. Hopefully it being earlier in the season means it won't be like that for us.

Here’s an idea. Let’s buy tickets, gets behind the boys and see what happens. Too many ‘fans’ finding an excuse not to go and waiting to say told you so.
The hard core of the support will be there as usual and the wannabes will wait till finals.

Best post I’ve seen on here in ages. Folk no going cause they’re worried about getting pumped by Rangers or because they don’t like Jack Ross but will magically appear for the final should we win - I don’t get it. What happened to we’ll support you evermore?

A tad over the uber top for me.
I don't think anyone needs an excuse not to go to a football match, even if it is a semi final. I'm not going because it's a dear day out, our football is uninspiring pish and I think we will get mightily pumped. If we win, I reserve my right to change my mind.

I was thinking that we’ll be in good shape ahead of the semifinal. We should have Doidge and Magennis back and the rest of the squad should be well rested and raring to go. The only problem I can see is if some of the players are still suffering the after effects, but given that they’re young and fit they’d be more likely to be fine.

If we get through all of your excuses can be used against the final so why would you want to go to that?

I agree with you.
Folk can do what they want without having to justify it to anybody.
I’m going but I don’t blame anybody in the slightest for not fancying it. There’s a number of reasons why people might not want to go and not one of them is any of my business.

I’m not too fussed if people don’t want to go. Some of the best away trips have been when the turnout wasn’t as big as we’d hoped for. The last 2 league cup semi’s against the hun have been brilliant games with excellent atmosphere’s. With a bit of luck those watching on tv will be the ones regretting their decision rather than those in the stadium.

I laughed way more than I should have at this, because it's so true, the timing of that sale was absolutely bonkers. Not that it would have made a huge difference on the day mind given the number of absentees.

We'd need one of our resident stattoes to confirm this but I think Hibs have only ever lost one Semi Final to Rangers
Something like nine wins and one defeat.
I think our normal routine is to beat Rangers in the Semi Final, get all excited about the Final, then lose* to somebody like Clyde, Third Lanark or Drumnadrochit Rovers.
* 1991 being the obvious exception.

1980 LC final, a Dundee derby, was also at Dens. United won 3-0 again.

Record v Rangers in cup semi-finals:
Played: 12
Won: 5
Drawn: 4 (one win on penalties)
Lost: 3 (one of which was the second leg of a SF we won overall)
Goals for: 14
Goals against: 11
It is quite an extraordinary record.

Nothing to lose so I hope we go for it from kick off with some high press.
Rangers will look to get in a new appointment for this game which will be a big first game for the new manager so anything can happen.
Can't wait for this game feels so long since our last game.

You need to be able to play a high press though. Can we? You only have to look at United attempting it against Liverpool and Albania trying it against England tonight. If you dont press properly, co-ordinated then the opposition will just play straight past it. Im not sure we've got the players at present to press high up the pitch I think we'd get picked off. What I would like to see is us having a bit of a go and not just siting back. I'd take a dull defensive 20% posession game with us nicking it 1-0 of course but although unliekly I'd rather see us having a right go at them and winning, well say 3-2

Our recent form concerns me more than Rangers do. I think before our injuries we looked a very decent side. Our season took a dip from the red card at Ibrox. Let's put it right again at Hampden.

Conveniently forgets to mention the stone wall penalty that Hibs should have been given in the first game as well as the late save to stop Colin Campbell scoring late on.

David McCallum could be in charge of Rangers clashes v Hibernian and Sparta Prague
David McCallum could be in charge of Rangers when they play Hibernian and Sparta Prague in their next two games, according to the Scottish Sun.
The newspaper reported via their print edition on November 16 [page 49] that after an interim coaching team was made up by the club as they aim to replace Steven Gerrard, there’s a chance that Rangers youth chief McCallum, 44, will effectively be the manager for the Scottish League Cup semi-final with Hibs on Sunday and the Europa League group stage showdown with Sparta next Thursday.

Didn't they gut punted out the SC a while back by Dunfermline under an interim manager?
