View Full Version : The value of our assets

I really wonder how much these guys are worth at the moment, what others thoughts are and if we will actually receive any bids in Jan.
Nisbet - Fair to say he has been nowhere near the level that he was at when he joined. Showing himself as a non-trier when the going gets tough. Undoubtedly better with a target man playing next to him but aside from the odd nice touch he hasn’t produced anywhere near the quality of a 7 figure player this season and arguably longer. Could we even get 1 million for him now?
Porteous - Had started this season pretty well I thought. Regardless of your view on the red card at Ibrox I was concerned by him last night as he flew into another wild challenge on McGregor. Would never want to take the aggression out of his game but he does need to reign it in a bit. Whether that would put a team off bidding for him I don’t know but either way I think he could still command a similar figure to what was banded around earlier 1 mil or so.
Doig - The big one for me. I know he is still young but I just can’t see how he is a multi-million pound player. Better at wing back than in a 4. I just don’t think he is that great at defending and is poor in the air for a big guy. Looks ok going forward at times but is that really enough to justify the big figures quoted? We will never know the concrete bids that were on the table but 4-5 million seems outrageous based on what I’ve seen in the flesh. If clubs in England really did ask us to cut it in half to 2.5 million I would seriously look at revisiting that in January if possible. As it stands I can’t see us getting any bids for him in Jan and it might not even be worth taking a cut price figure of say 1M as he could kick on to a higher value.
My point in all this is that it is obvious we need a big January window in terms of adding depth and quality into our squad. My concern is that part of the reason we never got some targets over the line was that we were waiting to sell one of these players for a very high price to facilitate it.
It looks in doubt IMO that we are going to get close to the figures quoted in the summer for our two biggest assets. Although Ron clearly isn’t short of a penny he isn’t an open chequebook and it might be a big ask to be investing the money required without getting some coming in to the club.
There is still a couple of months for these players to start turning in performances and their value undoubtedly correlates with the whole teams performance on the park. It’s clear though that the previous windows lack of signings have affected us now, but I worry if the lack of sales or not cashing in at the right time will affect us in future windows?

For me Nesbitt is taking a huge risk unless he has a deal all but agreed for him in January or Summer. His all round game is poor and he is not scoring goals. He isn't even making it difficult for defenders. If I was a scout I would be looking at him concerned what will happen if he moves to their team and then gets some interest from another club.

Porteous - £1m
Doig - £2
Nisbet - £ **** knows atm

Currently and probably on consistency for the past year I would say Porteous is our biggest asset and the best out the 3.
Doig - For me something is just missing, I can’t quite put my finger on it but on the ball he seems to lack any real quality. He can get up and down all day but rarely does anything come off. He’s young and has lots of time to improve but if we did get 2ish million with a sell on fee I’d accept it and consider it good business. Scott McMann at United and the two left sides hearts players in Kingsley and Cochrane show there’s other cheap options out there.
Nisbet - Goals get money moves but he just doesn’t score a lot right now at all, attitude is poor and he doesn’t really contribute anything else. I think he will go in January for about 2 million or so based on Scottish international and what he can do.
Porteous - I’m a huge fan of his despite him having brain farts now and again. He’s still really young for a centre half and has everything required to be a top centre half he just needs to learn which he doesn’t seem to be doing. Cut out the stupid tackles and he’s got a real chance.

I've not seen anything from the 3 of them to suggest they'll move onto anything bigger than Hibs and for money. Infact based on the last few weeks they're more likely to end up in the Scottish Championship! Hope i'm wrong.

I think with doig people have to remember he had Covid in the summer so never had a full pre season. With players who have had Covid it has taken them a while to get back to there full fitness. It’s the same with Jake Doyle Hayes he’s not been the sams player since he has had Covid.

Im still waiting too. Nisbet definitely has the potential to earn us a few quid but he's lost his spark.
Porto and Doig will never play for a bigger club than Hibs.

At this moment in time Boyle is our biggest asset.

These threads are a bit pointless as we have no idea of their actual value which is largely being driven by their contract value and other factors. Fans are to emotional as you have this thread in 2 months time when they are all flying and it would have a different valuation I’ve no doubt.

The more I see of Doig, the more I think it was a big mistake not taking the offer when it came in. I think that’s part of the reason Mathie was relieved of his duties.

I think your right and his judgement was possibly clouded by wanting to achieve Hibs record transfer fee which I don’t thinks helped his case

Fair points, 2 months is a long time in football and the valuations may change a lot if the form picks up.
As you say ultimately what the fans value them at won’t matter a jot but the recent consensus that a big window was needed in January made me question how reliant that would be on us selling one of these players.
Now that we have seen two of them in the flesh as opposed to the TV (albeit not in their finest light currently), I am concerned that the summer could have been a big opportunity missed with longer term consequences if we don’t have the funds to improve because of it.

Hibs messed up the summer window, in particular selling one of these "assets". Their absence would have made little difference to the team but would have given us much needed funds to bring in other (hungrier) players to bolster the ones we currently have.

Agreed. Had he said Scottish players were continually undervalued and we wouldn’t sell them on the cheap and left it at that I don’t think anyone would have disagreed. When he started talking about being responsible for bringing in our highest ever fee it started to sound like it was more about him than what was best for the club.
I know I’ve said this a few times but I still don’t understand how Doig was pulled from a couple of squads because we thought he was about to be sold, yet the offers that did come in were nowhere close to the £5m valuation.

Doig was always going to hit a dip in form at some point if he stayed.
He’s now got an opportunity to learn from the experience and emerge stronger - and more valuable - for it.
I’m not convinced he’s helped much by playing behind Murphy, who is a bit questionable defensively himself.
Doig had a decent game on Wednesday, against as tough an opponent as he’s likely to play in Scotland.
I still have a lot of hope for him - although I’ve also been very impressed by Stevenson when he’s played in Doig’s place. In terms of short term picking up points and playing LB in a four, it’s hard to pick between the 2 of them right now.

I agree I thought he was fine the other night and I also thought he was good at ibrox and played better than Patterson. He’s going to have his dips and make mistakes as much as anything these big clubs are buying the raw material and tools for them to shape into a more valuable asset. He’s got a lot of that with his pace, hight, fitness and athleticism and he can play aswell so can understand why he was being coveted on the back of Tiernry and Robertson clubs will be looking to pick up these kind of players for a few million which is cheap when you look how these guys have developed.

Does it matter? Nothing can happen before the January window and the transfer market being what it is, a crap player today could hit a good streak and be worth 2-3 times what he is worth today come January. It’s all an unknown and in the hands of the media. :greengrin

£5m for josh was just ridiculous imo, obviously we don't know for sure who was trying to hold out for the extra £££'s, Mathie/Ross/RG, even dropping the laddie from the squad because a transfer was 'imminent' and we thought we were getting mega bucks was pretty embarrassing the way it turned out, was it just mathie that pushed for £5m or was he told to by RG, i guess we'll never know the facts

I guarantee you both those players will go onto bigger clubs or better leagues on far more money than Hibs.
