Don’t know if anyone’s seen the video of the bagpiping motorist attempting to annoy the Insulate Britain protesters earlier today but he’s wearing Hibs shorts from a few seasons back.

That is utterly brilliant and I hope he is a Hibs.net user. More power to his lungs and I hope he played off key as well 🤣

I have to say I feel the polis overstepped the mark pulling the chanter from his mouth. He’s as entitled to be there as the protesters but polis seem to want nothing to upset them 🤨

Can hurting someone’s ears by playing loud bagpipes right into their ears be classed as assault?

Like spraying an air horn into someone’s ears maliciously.

I could see both scenarios be classed as assault.

Also, when did we all turn our backs on the right to peaceful protest?

Much has been won in history with peaceful protest. Suffragets and Civil Rights in the US spring to mind.

Probably. I knew an animal rights campaigner briefly many years ago who had been charged with an offence (maybe assault but I can’t remember) after she shouted through a megaphone into the ear of a lady wearing a fur coat.

He's wearing shorts in October, maybe global warming is real.If he'd been practicing somewhere it's not all that unusual to wear shorts as you can get pretty sweaty.

If he was playing somewhere in a kilt, it's not unusual to change for driving/travelling as it's more comfortable & doesn't knacker your pleats.

Ambulances are regularly stuck in horrendous traffic, which can and does result in unnecessary death, which I suppose might be one of the point of the protests? Such instances generally aren’t used as a political weapon by the media though…

Ambulances that wouldn't be stuck if it wasn't for the protestors though. Or folk trying to make their way to work to make a living stuck for hours. All for protesting but that is taking it too far.

It's not the fact that they're blocking traffic, it's the fact that they're pissing off everyone who is either held up by them or is worried about being held up by them that is the problem.

By causing that aggravation they're actually harming a very sensible cause. For example, why isn't it mandatory that all new build houses meet the highest energy standards? Much cheaper than trying to retrofit existing buildings.

The campaign is about old houses. The U.K. has some of the oldest stock in Europe. The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) 2018 report, Scaling Up Retro fit 2050, advises that nearly every home in the UK needs to be upgraded with energy efficiency measures.

I was responding to @eyrie's point about new houses.

You're correct about old housing stock but that's up to the individual property owners who are unlikely to be swayed by the IB people. My own pile needs to be brought up to modern standards so I know how much the costs are and they are substantial.

I'm an Edinburgh resident, not a tourist. There are residents in the new town who find the sight of wheelie bins an abhorrence. Probably old, retired-embezzler, mbe recipient gadgies. They'll never give up their range rovery style cars and the very idea that their houses even need insulated would be seen as pure communism.

So what is the answer?

Any kind of civil disobedience, be it mass protests, occupying public buildings or national strikes inconvencies someone. If that turns individuals against a cause that is bigger than all of us then we may as well just give up now.

I actually think people underestimate how critical and pressing this is. It's not something that is a century or more down the line anymore. Everything I've mentioned in the 2nd paragraph of my quoted post will happen and in most cases is already happening.

The latest UN climate report was clear. We are less than a decade away from the point of no return. I think Insulate Britain are about more than their name suggests and people should be able to see that wider picture. In recent days the Govt have announced a scheme to move people away from gas boilers, the funding in place covers 90K homes on an island with almost 70M inhabitants. They have also reduced the costs of flying as a sop to big businesses. Neither policy screams that they are serious about tackling climate change.

My house was built in 1865 and we were lucky enough to get free paneling put in on top of our external-facing internal walls, as part of some public-funded energy scheme that was happening a couple of years ago. It meant a slight reduction in the size of rooms, but not noticeable. Can't say for definite if it's made the rooms warmer, but I think it probably has.

Would you charge someone who was in a car crash?

A lorry that shed its load?

I hear this ambulance thing all the time. Did anyone actually die? Did ambulances get stuck?

Or is this just a right of arc reaction to being inconvienced?

Incidentally my mates Dad had a heart attack and the thing preventing the ambulance using the most direct route to hospital was the speed bumps and other traffic calming measures that had just come in. Now nobody bats an eyelid at them.

Being passive does not work as you get ignored. Inconvenience is the only way to make politicians act. Whether that’s work to rule, teachers and nurses striking, passive resistance, etc.

You’re half right, because violence has already started, cars being driven at protestors, the old dude getting inked. And it’s not surprising at all, because of the media coverage, which is blanket brutal abuse of the campaign and virtual incitement. Insulate Britain get the kind of coverage reserved for paedophiles, Corbyn and anything French.
