It's a step in the right direction, imo.

A very small step. Unions are becoming less relevant due to their political ideals. There’s been a union for my line of work , but I couldn’t join them as in my opinion they’re more interested in political ideals than representing the workforce. Most unions in Scotland support the Labour Party while the majority of the people don’t vote Labour. Are they representing the worker or the Labour Party? Recent evidence would suggest it’s not the workers.

I agree with much of this, I left the union I was in after they told me how I should vote in the Independence Referendum

PR isn't happening anytime soon either, Tories are never letting it happen

This is just not true, most unions are not affiliated to the Scottish Labour Party and ones that are either have a opt out on joining their political fund or a Labour Link.
If workers don’t join a union or participate in the union then they are not in a position to criticise the democratic policies of the union.
The SNP have a trade union group that claims to have 16000 members but when was the last time they spoke out in favour of workers over their party?
Recently 5 Glasgow MSPs wrote a factually incorrect open letter criticising the RMT union but again nothing from the SNP TUG

Unison, USDAW and GMB are affiliated to the Labour Party and the others have close links. I don’t really care if they have an opt out, I don’t want to represented by people who are diametrically opposed to what I believe in.

Labour will never bring in PR. It would spell the end of the Labour Party for a start. They could never hold together the coalition of lefties that gather under their umbrella in the hope of power in the event that they could all split and aim to be part of a coalition govt. The people who run the party know this.
File this in the same place as ‘Labour will get rid of the House of Lords’.
