It is kind of problematic!
I see the bands decision has whipped Piers Morgan into his usual cancel culture frenzy, I actually enjoy his work now, he’s like the gammon prince.

Gold Coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in the market down in New Orleans
Skydog slaver knows he's doin' all right
Hear him whip the women just around midnight
Brown Sugar, how come you taste so good
Brown Sugar, just like a young girl should
Drums beatin' cold, English blood runs hot
Lady of the house wonderin' when it's gonna stop
House boy knows that he's doin' all right
You should have heard him just around midnight
Brown Sugar, how come you taste so good?
Brown Sugar, just like a young girl should
Brown Sugar, how come you dance so good?
Brown Sugar, just like a black girl should
I bet your mama was a tent show queen
And all her boyfriends were sweet 16
I'm no school boy but I know what I like
You should have heard them just around midnight
Brown Sugar, how come you taste so good
Brown Sugar, just like a young girl should
I said, yeah, yeah, yeah, wooo!
How come you, how come you dance so good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, wooo!
Just like a, just like a black girl should
Yeah, yeah, yeah, wooo!

I'll admit to not having a clue about the lyrics until I read them, but given the old buggers have played it for 50 years it's maybe a tad late to have a light bulb moment.

Practically every hit they had on 60's revelled in misogyny.
Don't understand the dropping of that track at this stage of the game..

First single I bought.

Different times indeed.

I thought that Brown Sugar was about heroin. Never been a fan of The Rolling Stones but given that they have been around for ages there must be hundreds of songs that they don't play. Maybe Piers Morgan is the slaver in line three?

So, unless I've picked it up wrong, the song is about a guy who owns slaves and whips and rapes them?

Hard to argue about that being disgusting, and makes you wonder why it took 50 years for anybody to object.

I do kind of wonder with all the admitted underage sex (ie rape) that most of the band got up to, and the lyrics above tell you a lot about Jaggers mind set both in relation to rape and race, why they get to be portrayed as cuddly old semi establishment men and not like, say Gary Glitter types? :dunno:

The misogyny is all part of that always has been.

Is it not because the Rolling Stones appear to have moved on from the sort of stuff that went on in the 60s & 70s (apart from Bill Wyman...) whereas Gary Glitter continued for as long as he could?

Bill Wyman will be 85 this month so don't think he is up to much.

Yeah, I remember that. I always wondered what they found to speak about. That was the real scandal.

Yeah, Brown Sugar is a song, a rock song at that.
The riff is far more important to it than the lyric hence hardly anyone had questioned it during it's 50 year existence.
It's art, it is not real life.
Similarly, stories in books and films.
Madness I tells ya!

I remember that her mother was very much in favour of it at the time, despite Wyman being older than her, never mind her daughter.

You're broadly right there. I used to love them in the sixties but it's all over now. Geddit?

They're a bunch of old tories who haven't produced anything of note since the eighties.

Just heard this on the radio. Not that interested in disecting each and every lyric of songs, the sound they make bedded into the music is sometimes what makes a song good or bad and Under My Thumb is a great, great track.

Check this out though, bullying, misogyny etc etc

Under my thumb
The girl who once had me down
Under my thumb
The girl who once pushed me around

It's down to me
The difference in the clothes she wears
Down to me, the change has come
She's under my thumb

And ain't it the truth babe?

Under my thumb
It's a squirmin' dog who's just had her day
Under my thumb
A girl who has just changed her ways

It's down to me
Yes it is
The way she does just what she's told down to me
The change has come
She's under my thumb
Ah, ah, say it's alright

Under my thumb
Is a Siamese cat of a girl
Under my thumb
She's the sweetest, hm, pet in the world

It's down to me
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come
She's under my thumb
Ah, take it easy babe
Yeah

It's down to me, oh yeah
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come
She's under my thumb
Yeah, it feels alright

Under my thumb
Her eyes are just kept to herself
Under my thumb, well I
I can still look at someone else

It's down to me, oh, that's what I said
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come
She's under my thumb
Say, it's alright

Say it's all
Say it's all

Take it easy babe
Take it easy babe
Feels alright
Take it, take it easy babe

It was the 70's, mate. Most people looked like they had escaped from Carstairs. Some actually had.
