Notice Sky are introducing new product that will see the end of satellite dishes. Only doing the Sky Glass TV in three sizes. I think they should have offered it in more sizes. Think they will struggle with this new product as it does not seem to offer much more than a smart TV. Also only 4K when it seems far east are producing 8k tvs.

Are they going to have apps for existing smart TVs? Apple TVs, Firesticks etc etc?

Edit: seems the answer is no but they are also producing their own small set top box called a "puck" but you'll only be able to get that in addition to the Sky Glass thing, not instead of.

The largest size is 65 inches – little point in 8K resolution at that size, you'd need to sit within about a metre of it to be able to tell the difference vs 4K.

Saw that. You have apps like Pluto and Plex which offer Live TV and also on Demand stuff. Think what Sky are doing could have been done on an App. You can also buy soundbars at £70 which provide amazing sound quality.

I wonder when Sky will get round to completely change their business model. They run fleets of vans all round the UK and pay thousands of engineers etc to maintain satellite dishes at people’s homes and Netflix don’t have any of that and just freeload on the UK broadband network. At some point you would think that Sky will surely jump ship and do the same?

Seems a bit rubbish you have to buy their tv though.

Thought the plan was to go dish free and run the channels CIA broadband only.

They were testing TV via broadband just before covid, heard nothing since then

This is tv via broadband but you need their hardware (the sky glass tv) sitting on your home network to watch anything.

:agree: I dumped sky years ago for two reasons:

1. It's way too expensive.

2. I can't use it when travelling abroad like I can with my ROKU stick.

Used Sky Go on my phone many times on holiday.
With Sky products you are better waiting till they iron out the glitches as all their new products always seem to have issues when they launch.

Sky Go no longer works outside the UK since the UK left the EU. The only exception is if you download shows in the UK, you can then watch them abroad.

I think they said it runs Android Apps as well, though I'd need to check that to be sure.

It seems like they intend it as a go to for both TV and Computing, or at least the Social Media side of it.

Sit in your own home and watch TV with friends and family that are at the other end of the country, and chat about what you're watching. That seemed to be one of their 'selling points'.

Thanks for that Info SDG was on holiday the week before we left the EU watched it ok. Brexit has a lot to answer for. Think Sky have hit the woodwork with this new product as most techies have have the most up to date stuff so will be reluctant to replace until it breaks down. What Sky tend to do is to stop supporting the older kit out there forcing people to take on their new product.

I didn’t know that, presume it would work with a VPN?

It really has. Why on earth would you go for this option when you can get just as good a service via the traditional set top box? They need to move to an online only service that is available through an app on your tv, this looks like an attempt to take us down a route that most people won’t be interested in.

Sky are heavily reliant on the EPL contract but if say Amazon wanted to get the EPL they have the financial means to blow Sky out the water. Sky movies are now no better that what you can get on netflix or amazon prime sky are now trying to catch up by building new studios to make their own content. With other apps and IPTV available this is a big gamble by Comcast and Sky.

I thought it looked like a decent proposition, if the TV is a high quality picture, there’s a built in soundbar so the audio quality will be an upgrade on most TVs, and you don’t need a set-top box for it.

Given Xbox are now well into streaming games (they’re making it possible to stream current gen games on last gen consoles) it’s not a stretch to think that you could have all your TV services and a high end gaming service available through the one TV with no other boxes connected.

That’s quite impressive, imho.

Well ill go against the grain on here, ive pre registered, was looking to get a new tv anyway so good timing, had to convince the boss to let me get the 65" though as she reckons our current 55" is big enough, and saves me having a box and dish outside my house, happy days

Yep, minimum package is £26/month, assuming you bought the telly. It's £39/month for the small telly and tv service. I'm not sure if it has to be over Sky broadband or you can stick with another provider.

My TV is in the middle of the wall with all the cables hidden so having everything down into one 'box' appeals.

I would go for the 55" and an equivalent Samsung in currys starts at £580

Yip my current tv was more expensive than the one sky have in this deal, which to some people may be expensive i suppose. Bit like cars, you can either buy a car that has all singing all dancing tech or buy a car that gets you from A to B, same with tvs

doubtful they’d take the dish away bud, just ask you to return the sky q equipment (unless your on sky+, in which case they’d tell you to just disconnect the box)

I can see why the companies that pay for the infrastructure would be getting a bit p1ssed off with the ever increasing level of traffic, with the main culprits not paying a penny for it.
