It will be interesting to see who the next German Kanzler will be. Opinion polls are favouring the SPD at the moment but it's pretty close. It will also be interesting to see which of the smaller parties make gains, my main concern is that those voters who have deserted the CDU have jumped ship to the AfD. However a strong surge towards the Greens and the SPD are hinting at a possible left wing revival.

I know nothing about German politics and their parties. What party did Merkel represent and were they more left or right leaning?

CDU (Christian Democrats) are the middle right party, Merkel was their leader since Helmut Kohl stepped down.

SPD are probably Germany's equivalent to Labour.

FDP the Liberals

AfD Brexit party on steroids. They have tried to put on a respectable face recently but in their core they are an amalgamation of former extreme right parties and because of that the mask keeps slipping.

The Greens are pretty self explanatory. They are much stronger though in Germany than in the UK and have been involved in a few coalition governments.

Die Linke have their roots in the former East German ruling party the SED, they still have some support base in the former East but little influence in the West.

Then there's literally hundreds of other small parties and independents.

The election system is vaguely similar to the Scottish one which pretty much guarantees the need to form coalition governments.

First results looking likely that there will be a SPD, Green and Liberal coalition. AfD around 10% in the whole of Germany but looking likely to have won the State of Saxony in the former East and about 25% here in Brandenburg.

Less than they got last time, so there's at least that.

A few weeks ago the Green Party were polling ahead of the others. It's really interesting that other parties campainged on a lot of Green policies from 30 years ago. I think the CDU/CSU have lost votes because some people were concerned they might work together with the AfD.

God do you reckon they would have, surely not

The party leadership in the Bundestag categorically refused to work together with them, but at regional level there has been some flirting.

Looks like CDU/CSU have really slumped. Thankfully AFD didn't benefit too much

I think a Red, Yellow Green coalition would be interesting.... and colourful

I thought it was worth posting the photo from degenerated's post of St Pauli paying tribute to the non-existent leafleting company that dumped the AFD leaflets

I'm sure it's just a total coincidence they were playing Dynamo Dresden that day....
