Why do Hibs stop playing when they go in the lead? Time and again, we take the lead and then stop playing. We cannot defend so why do it?

Don't think it's as simple as that. The other team has to attack more when they're behind than when they're level. Goodwin brought on 2 subs as soon as Boyle scored the penalty. They knew they had to go for it.

I have no issue with Hibs trying to defend a lead, I have an issue with them failing to do it.

If we’re to be defensive, let’s not find ourselves dissecting the same goal lost every week with 3 or 4 players potentially culpable.

Sitting back isn’t the problem - losing goals is. Whether we’re sitting back and being worn down eventually or going hung ho and getting picked off on the break doesn’t matter. We just need to stop losing these bloody goals.

Losing a 2-1 lead to draw 2-2 seems to have been a regular occurrence for Hibs in recent seasons. I don't think there was anyone in the stadium who was surprised to see Hibs lose a late goal today. Its annoying but not unexpected.

Let's try and prevent the fist goal and score our two then we should be able to defend a 2-0 lead

We have a lengthy history of struggling to defend a lead at ER. I'd prefer we defend but then leave more players for the counter. People are complaining about crosses being allowed to come in. Easy to see why when we are playing a back 5 with a wingback that isn't a defender (Boyle), with a narrow midfield 3 in front (none of whom are particularly mobile) and 2 players left higher up who are not known for defensive work rate. Invitations to walk into our half and create overloads in wide areas. If you look who scored their equaliser and watch the goal you can see how much of his run and their approach play were uncontested. It's ridiculous, really.

They snapped into tackles pretty much all game. Touch tight
for most of it until Allan came on who drifted into space. Apart from that 15min spell in the 2nd half we were never touch tight or putting pressure on ball. We give teams time and space in our half which is just stupid...

Jack ross needs to realise that having 2 centre halfs on the park in the last 10 minutes clearly isn't enough for us to see it out. We can't defend cross balls that's fact. So why not do throw big daz in with 10 to go, fwiw as good as Allan was for the sake of the team and seeing it out, id have taken him off for daz. I don't want to see us throw away a lead like that again for a long time!

First and foremost, I just want to start by saying that I’m not defending the team losing the 2-1 lead like the OP and others have pointed out.

However, you need to be realistic, with a few things, such as, the attacking intent we have as the home team, leaving opportunities for overloads against us on the counter like the second St Mirren goal today.

Big park, lots of ground for our defensive midfielders in particular to cover when we lose possession / turnovers of possession.

It’s hardly a cauldron to play in. I know it’s actually a nice place to play.

At 2-1 in general, no matter what, you’re in the game.

It’s frustrating cos it’s happened twice in the first 6 games of the season.

But this only happened maybe twice, in the whole of last season. So I don’t think we can accuse this squad of continually losing leads. It was a Heckingbottom thing mainly.

We need to get better at stopping crosses. Playing a back 4 more often this season is likely the main issue and we need to figure out how to get more help to the full backs. Also sometimes you just need to give some credit to the opposition.

McGinn was the 3rd CB at that stage. We moved to a back 5 with Boyle and Doig as wingbacks. Boyle can't defend though so when McGinn gets dragged out Porteous and Hanlon edge towards the front post.

Thing is,you really need to defend from the front, with a front three of Boyle ,Nisbet and Alan,we had no chance of doing this.
We have absolutely zero options up top, no traditional centre forward since Doidge was injured,to take the knocks ,play with his back to goal and get us up the park, looks like Mathie is carrying the can for this.

Didn't realise that mate, my point is though we can't defend cross balls so defending a 1 goal lead with 10 minutes to go we should be taking our smaller players off and getting the likes of daz and wood defending our box and seeing it out. It's not good enough conceding 2 to motherwell, dundee and now st.mirren the defence is costing us points. Or sorry our defending. We let far too many crosses into the box it needs fixed sharpish.

Wonder if we'll see Wood soon? Can't imagine Middlesbrough would send him up here just to sit on our bench. Does he replace our captain or promising young centre half or go three at back?
