Another Saturday, another game with the sun shining on Leith. St. Mirren provided the opposition but ahead of kick off focus was mainly on the newly installed big screens. I’ll be honest, I’m impressed but the novelty of looking at them wore off quickly!

Going into the game, the visitors had just three points on the board from league games whilst Hibs were looking to continue their unbeaten start to the campaign as well as regaining top spot in the league. They managed both, but only just as too many players were not at it today and the visitors more than deserved the point the 2-2 result gave them.

Right from the off it seemed obvious that St. Mirren were set out to close us down all over the park as well as taking an age to take goal kicks, free kicks, throw ins etc. These tactics prevented Hibs from getting up a head of steam as our midfield struggled and our wide men couldn’t find space in which to work. Jack Ross pushed Magennis higher up the park so that he could support Nisbet but there was a lack of supply to them and as a result, Alnwick in the Saints goal was chronically underemployed for the bulk of the first half.

Around the ten minute mark, Doyle-Hayes found Nisbet some twenty yards out, but the strikers shot was blocked. The visitors were trying to play on the break but were guilty of being caught offside more often than Jim Goodwin would have liked. Brophy was causing Hibs problems as he never missed the chance to have a shot on goal when the opportunity arose. Indeed, the striker twice called Macey into action and on another occasion saw a rasping drive just clear the crossbar.

In truth it was a poor spectacle in terms of quality play although in fairness to them I’d say the visitors looked more cohesive, in terms of creating chances. With half time just a few minutes away, a long clearance from the Saints defence reached Brophy who had Porteous for company out wide near the edge of the eighteen yard box. Instead of seeing him towards the by-line, Ryan allowed him to cut inside on his strong right side and fire a shot at goal. It was hit with pace, but I felt Macey was badly at fault in getting a hand to it but allowing it to sneak in at his near post. That goal saw Saints go in at the break a goal to the good.

Jack Ross, who had been very vocal from the dugout, made a change at the break by introducing Scott Allan at the expense of Chris Cadden and almost immediately there was an improvement in Hibs’ play. Within minutes, Allan set up Kevin Nisbet whose netbound strike was deflected just wide with Alnwick stranded. Soon after, Porteous rose at a corner and glanced the ball home, but the officials ruled out the goal apparently because Boyle was in an offside position near the goal line. I confess that baffled me because Boyle didn’t appear to make any attempt to play the ball and he was not in the eyeline of the goalkeeper.

After Brophy had come close again, Hibs were back on the attack and a Doig cross was poked towards goal by Magennis but was blocked with the ball then falling to Newell whose effort was also blocked. This time the ball fell to Scott Allan on the angle of the eighteen yard box. Scotty looked up and delivered an inch perfect cross ball to Paul McGinn who showed excellent composure to volley the ball into the net for the equaliser.

Soon after the goal, Alan Power was booked for a crude challenge on Newell in the centre circle. Newell got to his feet quickly and found Allan who, in turn, fed the ball to Nisbet but the striker’s effort was deflected wide for a corner. As the players awaited the delivery of the corner there was a fair bit of tussling going on and Porteous was booked for his part in it. Ironically, as the corner came in, Millar clearly dragged Porteous to the ground and Kevin Clancy instantly pointed to the spot. Once the complaints had been dealt with and the delaying tactics by the Saints players had ended, Martin Boyle stepped forward and smashed the ball past Alnwick to give Hibs the lead.

Immediately, Jim Goodwin made a double substitution, bringing on Main and Erhahon in place of Reid and Ronan. The new guys were more attack minded than those they replaced, and the visitors began to enjoy far more possession whilst for some inexplicable reason Hibs decided to sit off them. Fraser and Brophy both had efforts blocked whilst Shaughnessy was unlucky to see a right footed effort from close range smash off the bar and be cleared.

Hibs tried to weather that storm and created a couple of chances of their own but both Nisbet and Magennis saw efforts blocked. Magennis then set up Newell but once again the effort failed to reach its target. With time running out, Goodwin replaced a defender (Millar) with an attacking midfielder (McAllister) whilst Jack Ross replaced a tiring Doyle-Hayes with Gogic. The hosts were trying to wrap the points up with late efforts from Gogic and Nisbet but with two minutes of normal time remaining, Tanser eluded the challenge of McGinn and fired in a cross which Shaughnessy headed home from close range. I have to say here that I felt Macey could have grabbed that cross, but he didn’t, and two points were dropped.

Into time added on and Scott Allan was desperately unlucky to see an effort strike the post with Alnwick beaten and the chance for a late winner came after Boyle was fouled about twenty five yards from goal, but Nisbet’s free kick was high and wide.

A disappointing outcome then, but in truth it could have been worse with Brophy alone unlucky not to add to his one goal.

The players

Macey – After giving him the man of the match award against Hearts, I have to say he could and should have done better with at least the first goal and possibly both.

McGinn – Paul was having a great game and his goal was a belter but just moments after he was announce as the sponsors’ man of the match, he failed to stop the cross that led to the equaliser.

Porteous – I feel he was unlucky to have his headed ‘goal’ disallowed but as to his overall play it was mostly good with the odd moment when he tried to dribble his way out of trouble.

Hanlon – It might sound daft to say this because we shipped two goals today, but I reckon Paul had a decent game over the ninety minutes.

Doig – A bit more involved than he was at Tynecastle but it was noticeable that a lot of the St. Mirren play was coming down his side – maybe Goodwin thought there would be weakness there, but Josh proved him wrong for the most part.

Cadden – Chris never really got going today and it didn’t surprise me that he was replaced at half time.

Magennis – One of those not at his best today.

Doyle-Hayes – Same as Magennis and I wondered if the constant booing from the visiting support got to him.

Newell – Once again a bit of an up and down game from Joe. Always available but his propensity for passing the ball back the way certainly rattles the crowd. Perhaps if he had team mates offering more movement ahead of him, he’d be more positive.

Boyle – Martin was a peripheral figure throughout and other than slotting home that penalty I thought his general contribution was miles below what we’ve come to expect from him.

Nisbet – Kevin got plenty of glimpses at goal but hit a defender each time. I sensed unrest in the crowd following a couple of occasions when his first touch was horrendous, but I have to say there were a few other occasions when that touch looked tremendous.

Allan – For me, he lifted that team’s performance back towards the level we expect it to be. I can’t emphasise strongly enough that his contribution could have won us the game and although he only got 45 minutes, he’s my man of the match.

Gogic – I assumed his introduction was to help stem the flow of play right down the middle of the pitch. He didn’t and in fact I was stunned at one point to see him jogging about some twenty yards from our goal and nowhere near an opposing player.

Jack Ross – He was disappointed with large parts of the performance but like me, he felt a draw was a fair outcome.

Referee – Kevin Clancy is not popular down ER way but in fairness I thought he was ok today.

Decent review as always. No mention of the potential penalty on the run up to the Saints opener? I thought Nisbet was clearly held and the Lino should have spotted it. Maybe others had a better view.

Before they equalised I was thinking they deserved something from the game. Thought they played very well. We had a real off day.

Definitely missing Doidge. Kevin not effective as a lone striker in my book. Scott Allan should get a start next time out. The decision to play in McGinn was exceptional, as was the finish.

Boyle definitely knocked the ball into the net from an offside position. Unfortunate because Porto's header was net bound.

We’ve got nothing going on down the left without Murphy and Cadden certainly isn’t the answer out there. Cadden did well in the derby, full of running and clattering into people, but he’s not got any quality on the ball for games when we have the bulk of possession.
Players will always insist they are fit but Doyle-Hayes looked drained from his recent illness and the likes of Newell & Nisbet appeared to think they were too good for St Mirren, who showed much greater attitude and application throughout.
Macey was great last week but badly at fault for both goals - the ball is at shin height when Shaughnessy heads it - and his kicking was atrocious.
Thumbs up for Allan and McGinn’s excellent strike but it was largely a day to forget. Pretty lucky to get a point to be honest.

I spent much of the first half thinking that the same players in a 352 would have been much more effective.

He’s a young lad that needs a bit of help up front beside him. It’s nothing short of a disgrace that Hibs are in a position to leave our strike force so short. Really poor recruitment.

Nah, he’s a 24 year old and he needs to improve his performances. He certainly can’t be impressing any scouts this season. He’s been poor more often than not IMO

Boyle was scoring and assisting playing on the right - he’s our most effective player and moving him to accommodate Cadden I’m not sure works. Well felt like we weren’t getting best from him until he was moved back and Cadden went off. Cadden been out for months over performed in the derby and expecting him to play well in his 2nd game in a week was expecting a lot. Like Scott last week it felt first half we were playing with a player down.

Can’t remember the last natural left winger we had - it’s a position we have struggled to get a consistent player like Boyle playing.

Nisbet while much improved knows he can’t be dropped so lack of adding a striker is hurting us.

Felt Doig was looking tired and Gogic didn’t really do anything when he came on - he made an impact in the Derby but today didn’t take any pressure off us.

We couldn’t do the basics first half today and I’ve seen us worse we really made it hard for ourselves with slack passing and decision making.

We have a problem seeing games out and getting a midfielder or striker to hold onto the ball is something we have missed for a while.

Annoying day as others dropped points - Saints were organised and I’ve always Goodwin as a manager but we should be winning games like that if we want 3rd. My worry is that’s Dundee and today we have dropped points - failed to beat teams which will possibly be bottom 6.

Yes he does but no matter what I don’t think he’ll ever lead the line on his own. He needs a strike partner IMHO.

No - coincidence Hibs have played better when Doidge and Nisbet were on the pitch together.

I will keep going on but it was ridiculous we didn’t add another striker or at least give Gullan some game time or sign someone for free.

I’m the same as you, I can’t believe we didn’t address the problem especially as we could have had Griffiths until January with no obligation to keep him after that. It’s a big management mistake not addressing the problem that really could have been easily solved.

There were very few pass marks today, Hibs started and continued the first half with a slow tempo, Ross managed to help St Mirren along by starting with Boyle on the left, Nisbet was arguably their best player unable to hold the ball up and losing possession constantly. In the second half Hibs raised the tempo caused the visitors problems but unfortunately every cross into out box looks like it was delivered by David Beckham such is the ineptitude of our defenders in dealing with crosses, time for the lad from Middlesbrough to come in and address this problem probably at the expense of Hanlon.

Doidge injured and Nisbet had a poor game, yet Gullan left on the bench. He must be tearing his hair out.

I agree. We find ourselves in an astonishingly poor position as regards attacking options so early in the season.

Whilst Doidge's absence is unfortunate, the recruitment department has clearly failed in providing adequate cover, either through new recruits or developing young talent coming through the ranks. It's no wonder Mathie has been sacked.

The signing of Scott looks a poor one. Whilst it's way too early to assess if he is good enough to succeed at Hibs, he is woefully off the pace and unfit.

And this is why a major re-shuffle is ongoing. Quite rightly so. We are so threadbare as a squad.

Thanks for posting Jonnyboy

Compulsive reading as always

Macey shudda done better at the first no doubt but a brilliant piece of play by a former hibee and sometimes you have to say well done

Might have had a penalty leading up to their opener with a tug on Magennis

The Aberdeen keeper lost a similar soft goal at his near post I noticed

If Boyler doesn’t touch the ball on the line the goal stands I am led to believe but these things happen in the heat of the moment

The equaliser was a carbon copy of goals we have lost already this season

Cross fails to get cut out Macey leaves the ball for the centre half’s who get suckerred into the near post runners do not get picked up St Mirren player cuts across Doig who really needs to block his run 2-2

Difficult to say watching the replay if Macey shudda come for the cross or remained on his line

Keep up the good work

What on earth did the cross have to do with Hanlon?

Nathan Wood is a left sided centre back where do you want him to come in........at centre forward?

Thanks John, I must confess I was concerned when I saw the team. Seems crazy to move our most effective player, Boyle to accommodate a particular system. I also continue to be disappointed that in losing Murphy, JR hasn't given Gullan the chance to fill that role. He was POTY at Raith playing off the left.
Finally for the last goal I think you can partially blame McGinn for allowing the cross and Scotty for standing still as Shaugnessy ran off him. Most culpable however IMO was Josh who, not for the 1st time, seemed to lose his bearings in our box. The one player i wouldn't blame was Macey, though he was undoubtedly poor for the 1st goal.

Excellent report as usual Jonnyboy.
I'm to be persuaded on your view of Nisbet's performance. I thought he looked uninterested throughout the game, when he lost a ball his body language was indifferent and made little immediate attempt to win it back.
Lack of alternatives mean we can't drop him but he does need a period on the bench to recharge both his energy and determination levels.

Could easily drop him, put boyle up front, cadden out on the right and either allan or murphy/ out on the left

Filled in as a left sided midfielder according to Wikipedia, maybe he's 2 footed even better.

Quite possibly but he is definitely a right sided centre half, lewis stevenson has played right back but you wouldnt play him there all the time

Boyle can't play through middle on his own, Cadden has done nothing in his time with us to show he's an attacking threat and Murphy's injured. Nisbet is by far our best available striker but he's just in his 2nd season at the top level. He needs support and encouragement not continual criticism, not by you.

Have we played boyle on his own? Possibly have but i cant think when, if we have allan playing balls through to him i reckon it could work. Ideally have someone with nisbet but not looking like we will sign a free agent

Wasnt brilliant yesterday but when we went ahead, my mate and I thought we could get 4/5.
Wasnt to be sadly but lets look at this weekends scores, it wasnt as bad a result as we thought.
No easy games, Aberdeen lost, Celtc Lost, Hearts drew, Rankers drew, and We drew.
Perspective required mibbe?
