What a player! Why only 16 caps? Was class in what ever position he played. What would he be worth now?
Happy Birthday Sir Pat.
Happy birthday to my all time Hibs hero
An absolutely terrific player, loved watching him and that team, those were the days.

And my hero.

Pat Stanton celebrated his 25th in 1969 by scoring an 83rd minute screamer from 25 yards to give HIBS a 2-1 win at Parkhead after Jimmy Johnstone 21 had opened the scoring and Johnny Hamilton 48 had equalised after Peter Marinello and Eric Stevenson had unlocked the Celtic defence
Celtic would reach the European Cup Final in this season
The best HIBS player I have seen a true gentleman and the perfect ambassador for our great club
Many Happy Returns

My all time favourite player and Hibs hero. He really was different class - apart from his beautiful graceful footballing ability, he was a fierce tackler and superb in the air. If you’ve didn’t seen him play, don’t be fooled by the ‘Quiet Man’ tag, he could handle himself and then some.
Happy birthday Pat and many happy returns.

May I also add my Birthday wishes to Pat in your message, as by the October, Pat had also inspired Hibs victory's at Tynie & Ibrox to leave Hibs top of the pile, after that fantastic away treble, by Willie Mac's talented and adventurous side.
Sadly, by the following April, Hibs then chairman was found not to have the resilience of our current owner and Peter's, Cormack & Marinello had departed south and our hero, having watched three of his high valued team-mates leave in 18 months, he himself, the biggest hero of them all, put in a transfer request and that would have been a step too far for the fanbase. Thankfully the request was withdrawn and 15 month later Pat was still there to be an inspirational leader at the birth of the tornadoes.

On this day in 1972 he played in what he considered to be at that time HIBS’ finest ever away performance in Europe : Sporting Lisbon 2 v 1 Hibernian
Hibs wore purple shirts with white sleeves and Alex Cropley hit the post

Me and my schoolmate Raymie McIntosh were pretty much standing outside that gate stretching our young necks back in - and yes as people have already said, everyone went totally crazy. It was more than just a last minute equaliser against your rivals on their turf - they rarely beat us in the 70’s (once maybe.?) and we knew how utterly desperate they were for that victory.

I even dyed my platforms purple in celebration and dried them in an industrial oven at work. The second leg was a bit special as well, particularly the second half. :not worth

No one in Europe would have lived with us in the second half that night
Edwards and Duncan switched wings IIRC and Sporting couldnae cope
Halcyon days indeed

TV coverage. No cameras at Sporting game but STV covered the Napoli game, wonder if the film still exists.

I'm fortunate enough to be in Portugal right now. My bar owner buddy is a big Sporting fan but he (jokily) banned Jim O from his pub when I introduced him.😁
I still don't know who or when any UK player equalled Jimmy's record of scoring a hat trick in consecutive European games.

78 today!
For those of us who didn’t see him play, who would you compare him to from the last 20 years or so? Gerrard, Lampard, Scott brown when at Hibs? I know comparisons across generations aren’t easy but just an indication.

Met him once, in Leith Links on 22/5/16, after the celebrations. Someone who didn't know would have thought it was just 2 fans chatting, instead of one punter and a legend.
When we went our separate ways he clapped me on the back and said "been nice chatting to you".
A man with grace and class both on and off the pitch.

Greatest player I have ever seen in a Hibs jersey and my all time football hero.
I was at 5-0 Naples, 0-7, 2-1 LC Final, that last minute equaliser at Tynie and pretty much all the other incredible displays he put in for our club and the club he loved.
He could glide effortlessly across the midfield, heads up, with beautiful touches, tackle ferociously and was fabulous in the air. Man had everything.
Happy birthday King Pat and thanks for all those amazing memories you gave me and my dad watching from the terraces.

then word legend gets batted around so often it seems to lose its true meaning to describe someone like Pat Stanton and his infinity with Hibs. In my mind from a youngster he was Hibs in every thing he did on and off the field of play. Happy Birthday Pat.

Couldn't have put it any better. Remember reading something a Celtic fan wrote about Pat and them saying that the wished they had signed Pat in 1970, and that they may have won more than one European Cup if he had been signed.
He was elegance personified on the pitch.

Happy Birthday Paddy.
Best player I ever saw in our green & white AND a more respectable human being than any I ever met!
Paddy, as a young man you were referred to as God in our group, you have done nothing in the 50 years since then that has diminished that affection.
Hope you have a great day with many more birthdays look forward to.
