View Full Version : Shambolic Seating In Roseburn Stand

Due to a very painful mobility problem i cannot get out of the house without help and my football is at the moment my only escape.
Like most of you i look forward to the weekend to see Hibs play. Todays game was no different and i had looked forward to it all week.
A taxi took us to the top of McLeod street and a short though painful walk got me to the Roseburn Stand and to my seat in the first row of the higher part of th Roseburn Stand. Our seats had a great view and i was comforable with the crowd gathering around the wee concourse area in front of me.
Ive been going to Tyncastle many times and each time the ticket seating information and the signs outside are not very clear at all. loads of people came in and started to stand in that narrow concourse in front of us and we could not see anything going on,on the pitch. Despite us politely asking people to move they just looked at us with disgust and never flinched.
We asked umpteen stewards to move these people, my own team supporters, but their answer was there was no seats for them. If they had a ticket then they surely must have a seat?? Somebody's in my seat or i cant find where im sitting so im just standing here...eh, no you are not pal!
We asked the police to move them on but they said they didnt know where the seats corresponding to the tickets where ?? I must admit that Hibs supporters with tickets asked the stewards for help and they too didnt know where people should be sitting. By this time i am not too pleased and helped a few people find their seats myself.
By this time it is half an hour into the first half and folk are still standing on the concourse and we cant see anything!
Getting out of the stadium we waited till most of the crowd dispersed and spotted a very smart wee Hearts official at the exit gates who i complained to. He immediately passed me on to a lady steward who seems to be in charge of the stewards, she told me she had loads of complaints made to her by Hibs supporters on the same subject and she will pass them on to someone in charge at Hearts.
This has been a problem for many years in this stand and no one does anything about it. its the most horrific stand to negotiate in Scotland there are no hand rails to steady your self or to hold on to .. People dont know where there seats are in the stand and go in and out of rows sitting in other peoples seats.
it may have been a bit better should the stewards have checked the tickets on entry to the actual seating area or they themselves be aware where areas and seating are instead of just pointing and sending people here there and everywhere.
it spoiled my whole day out and made me so angry. Now i have to wait till next Saturday at Easter Road where i hope things will be better and enjoy my game!!!

That stadiums a throwback. The bbc like to blether about the atmosphere but it’s manky, unsafe and generally just a miserable place to be. I hate being penned in that narrow entrance in the old high school side, always been dangerous.

Ridiculously small seats and the numbering system is shambolic.

I sat at the front beside the blue covered seats and hearts had sold seats under the covers. Place was packed as people weren't allowed to sit in seats they were sold. Police told them to move on and they weren't sitting there. (Didn't give any solutions to where they should go either)

During the first half there was about 3 people to each seat where I was in the lower section, it was a shambles. A steward came down and asked people to move to their seats, the lads showed the stewards their tickets and pointed out that their seats were covered in blue netting. The steward just shook his head and left. Why are they selling tickets for an area that’s out of use?

Hopefully some have taken photos as evidence of that shambles and passed it onto the club, or even better, straight to the SPFL. Neil Doncaster will sort them out.

Hibs need to be taking this up with hearts. Joke and these things keep on happening at tynie. Maybe some sort of report to health and safety or whateve might prevent this in future.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience, Stantons Angel. The packing of the concourses always happens in that stand; it's chaos in there when Hibs score. No fun at all for those who need to sit and are blocked from seeing anything.

The stewards kept saying it was against health and safety to stand in the aisles, but there was nowhere else for them to go.

It’s been going on for years, but it’s gotten worse since the started closing off those bottom corners.

Few years back I had a ticket for a seat that didn't exist - was something like seat 43 but the row ended at 39 then started again at 1 on the opposite block.
It's also numbered right to left for some bizarre reason.
I was in section M and no probs there. Its easy to criticise Hearts but as we all know an element of our support want to do the outside for a fight pointing to the other cretins.
The away end has safety issues without a doubt.

The problem is that seats in every section are numbered the same (1-30 or whatever) so it's a bit like solving a cross word puzzle finding your seat.
Section - Letter
Row - Letter
Seat - Number
It can be confusing.

Can’t be true, tuned into BBC sportsound today and they were gushing about the place.
Think some of them should take the away supporters journey to the stadium and into their seat to truly live the experience, but that would involve them paying for a ticket, which none of them have ever done I’d guess.

whilst there are some (I hate to say it) muppets in our support that want to sit where they want (likely with mates and cause problems - a fight was caused due to this in the semi with Falkirk - not helped by inept stewards) but that doesnt cover the fans being allocated to seats that were allegedly blocked off…

It's a pretty poor design given that they have to cordon off the sections in either corner of the away end which reduces our allocation.
How close is the pitch to the minimum requirements required?
You'd have thought that they'd have at least tried to get the pitch to uefa standards during the main stand construction by absorbing the lost seats behind either goal into the new stand?

Agreed, finding your seat is pretty easy, look at the signage in the concourse, go into right area, walk up to row and along to seat number. Was the issue not finding the seats or the seats not being there. I noticed that there were lots standing on the walkway between the "tiers" right next to a policemen who seemed to be enjoying the game.

The last time I was there I mind having a bit of bother - can't remember the exact details but If I remember right, I think the very first row closest to the pitch (which you'd assume was Row 1) was actually Row 3.

I think they removed a couple of rows of seats quite a few years ago to extend the pitch as much as they could. Still the smallest in the league and one of the smallest in the land.

Its a long time since I've been to Tynecastle, the St Johnstone League cup tie in 2016 in fact. My experience was the same as the OP's we had tickets for the Gorgie stand but the seats on our tickets didn't seem to exist and when we did eventually find them they seemed to be nowhere near the area signposted in the concourse. Doesn't look like things have improved much at the rust arena.

The Roseburn stand doesn't have the most intuitive numbering system but it is easy to ascertain exactly where your seat is before attending using Hearts ticketmaster to identify your seat by checking out sales for a future game e.g. for yesterday's game you could have looked at seats in the Roseburn stand for their next home game against Livingston.
Most of those attending will have been in that stand twice a year since it was built so should know how it is laid out by now.
Basically there are 5 verticle sections in the stand H,J,K,L & M (H is furthest away from the entry point) Note there is no section I.
The bit which confuses the denser or loaded supporters and later arrivals is that each section is individually numbered from right to left I.e. seat 1 in each section is nearest the new main stand so in the case of the last section H it begins with seat number 1 and ends with seat number 28 at the Wheatsheaf end of the Roseburn stand whereas each stand at Easter Road is numbered consequtively from one end to the other.
The other anomaly is that row 1 doesn't exist having been removed to extend the pitch.
Obviously none of the above knowlege will alleviate the issue if Hearts sell tickets for covered up seats, which is absurd or the far more prevalent issue of selfish Hibs supporters deciding they will just stand where they want.

Am I right in thinking that our new Chief Exec was with our fans in the Roseburn today - specifically in order to see what "the experience" was like?
If so I would imagine that complaints will be made in the right way.
I wasnt there yesterday, but have been the last few times at that stand.
Ignoring that it takes a while to get in (our fans to blame sometimes as they are in the boozer) once you are inside its no surprise that fans are all over the place - crap signage, and little space in each seat (I am 6 foot 1 and there is zero knee room).
It does have a good atmosphere due to its enclosed nature, but thats pretty much it.
I should say (from the Bonnyrigg Rose cup match) that the home spectator experience is no better.

If you reallly find it difficult to locate your seat, I wouldn’t be joining any orienteering clubs any times me soon. I was in the front row, row 2 for some reason, and I had loads of empty seats either side of me. This suggests folk we’re sitting wherever they wanted rather than their allocated seat in row 2.

Can remember the first time we were given the school end in 1997, 2-0 defeat. Nobody had a clue how to find their seat due to their sections and numbering system. Quite a number of Hibs fans just stood on the walkway as if it was a terrace. It was chaos.

They did in 2005. I asked earlier, why didn't the try and make their pitch bigger and fully uefa compliant when they built the main stand. It would have meant further rows behind each goal were lost but surely you'd want your stadium to be fully uefa compliant.

I agree with this and it's not simply about a bit of petty Hearts bashing.
Football fans have always been treated as second class citizens where major sporting events are concerned. Treated in ways that, for example, rugby fans never would be. The 'that's good enough for them' mentality somehow works out fine in safety terms the vast majority of the time until suddenly its Heysel, Ibrox or Hillsborough.
Pished-up and coked-up fans won't help - even if in the minority - but there can't be many more basic safety issues than overselling tickets, particularly in a very tight and quite vertical constrained stand. That's such a fundamental safety issue that I find it hard to believe it happened. So much so that I wonder if they sold ones they didn't mean to and didn't sell others they should have?

That may well be true and its a bit of an error from Hearts that needs sorted for the next game but I tell you what did happen, loads of people decided they didn't want to sit in their allocated seats and fancied the front row of the lower instead, there was far too many in row 2 of the lower section where I was and the steward had a torrid time trying to get them to move to their own seats, she managed to do it one by one as they went to the toilet and when they came back they got their tickets checked and punted out. Second half there was hardly anyone in the front row because they'd all been moved to their proper seats. Theres an element of folk who think they can come and do what they like and sit/stand where they like at Tynecastle, this generally doesn't go on at any other ground we visit.

It looks a pink Meccano mess. You can argue a lot of things about how it is improved in terms of atmosphere, safety, facilities etc but pleasing aesthetic visuals really isn't one of them.
There was something badly wrong yesterday and many more people around me both crammed in the rows or standing on the stairs. What the root cause is I am not sure. Could have been people finding their way in, could have people being with their mates or could be tickets sold for seats that didnt exist.
The stewards made a few half hearted attempts to sort it out but left without any resolution. At one stage I was asked to squeeze in to allow one of the stair standers into my row. I pointed out I was in the seat corresponding to my ticket and if I squeeze in we must breach some rules. Steward asked me again and then just walked away

That is an odd take on things. I am a regular at Tynecastle derbies purely because its great when we win them.
The experience though is usually pretty poor. Inadequate entry provision, poor toilets (which we dont help by trashing), poos seating, squashed in and the view of the game and a perspective of whats happened at the far end are just poor. It is what it is though.

They couldn’t. The four supporting towers in each corner would need to come down - and with them the stands they support - to extend their tiny pitch further.

Even longer since I set foot in 'Tiny'castle for a Hibs men's match. 2007 League Cup semi (again v St Johnstone). I remember even that long ago thinking how quickly the bargain basement stands had aged. I did go back for the women's Scottish Cup final a couple of years ago and the leg room/view from the new (albeit still unfinished) main stand was significantly better. Tom English & co should try watching from the away end as that would give them pause for thought when raving about how great the place is.

Yeah, the home end had loads of empty seats. The ‘red zone’ and around the ‘away tunnel’ for starters, two corners in the Hibs end, middle section of the Gorgie road stand had rows empty near the top. Then strangely all around the home end there were loads of empty seats which is fairly unheard of for derbies over there.

They will have season ticket holders who still don’t fancy being part of a large crowd. It is no surprise that there were gaps really. It’s going to take a while yet to get back to normal pre-COVID attendances.

To be fair, most appeared to have little if any problem actually finding their seats from what I saw. I was in early doors at 1115hrs and saw how things developed.
It was a different matter about 10 minutes before kickoff though because of the narrow gangways and steep stairways creating bottlenecks. Looks like an accident or worse waiting to happen to my eyes.
The small seats and lack of leg room make it, as always, an uncomfortable stadium to visit for me.

Ah OK, that makes sense.
I knew they'd kept some sections empty, I was just surprised it was about 1,500 or so.
BTW, the official capacity of the stadium (going by the safety certificate issued in 2018) is 19,852.

Section under their Police Box was practically empty too

Ensue up in the wrong seat myself but was quickly rectified and found the right one in the next block.
Didn’t detract from what was a great day out, cracking away day atmosphere and a highly entertaining game - anything but a waste of a day. Looking forward to the next one already.

With the amount of whinging and complaining about Tynecastle on here I'm amazed anyone went yesterday. Biggest **** hole ever and and not fit for purpose but folk still went. If folk genuinely felt that way they wouldn't go.
Favourite away ground and favourite away day for me, I think its a great stadium. Love how the stands are so close to the pitch.
If some idiots were blocking your view of the pitch youd be on here during the half time break complaining in your usual manner, my dear.
I pay my money like everyone else and expect to watch a game of football not the back of someone with arms in the air swearing their heads off.
Like you i cannot sit in the house knowing they are playing in that dump or anywhere else. I want to support my team and see what is going on .
My feelings on the subject are genuine enough and i go to any stadium with the thought that i am going to be safe and comfortable throughout the game. i also hope that my team will win too.
its an accident waiting to happen!
Hearts announced a crowd of 18000 where the capacity is just shy of 20k
We know there were red zone and rosebrurn areas blocked off and so the ctual capacity was probably under 19k. I noticed gaps in the home end as well.
I wonder how many Hibs fans were in the Roseburn and how this equates to the stand capacity,

Remember it's tickets sold, not actual bums on seats...
