Dead at 39. Desperately sad, I hold Girls Aloud as a genuinely brilliant all girl group with a back catalogue of really great pop tunes. Seen them on their Ten tour at the SECC - a rare trip to a pop concert- and it was an evening of colour, glamour and most of all sheer joy.

Sad news indeed. I'm way too old to ever have been a 'fan' (and even when I was younger they would never have been my type of band) but I used to do a lot of babysitting for my nephews and nieces when they were little and I remember us watching Girls Aloud winning X-Factor (or was it a forerunner of that programme that I'm thinking about?).

Cancer's an awful thing.
