Striker Leigh Griffiths says he joined Dundee from Celtic despite Hibernian having a late bid accepted for him.

The 31-year-old sealed a season-long loan return to Dens Park - where he played from 2009-11 - on deadline day.

In July, Griffiths extended his Celtic deal to summer 2022 but failed to feature under Ange Postecoglou.

"I had a couple [of offers] from England, and I got told Hibs were interested late but nobody picked up the phone there," he said.

"If they pick up the phone it's a different story. It would have been a massive decision. But they didn't so it was an easy decision for me coming here."

BBC Scotland has contacted Hibs for comment.

Scotland international Griffiths previously had two loan spells at Easter Road after leaving Dundee to join Wolverhampton Wanderers.

So the top line says we had a bid accepted and the last line says we never even picked up the phone?? So which one was it?...

"Journalists" at it again I assume

If Hibs had wanted him there would have been a big decision to make, we didn't, so it was an easy decision for him.

The image of Jack Ross looking at his phone when it rings to see Leigh's name pop up then swiftly sliding it onto mute has amused me I have to say.

So Hibs didn't actually get in touch but someone told him Hibs were interested. 🤔

I read that as hibs making a bid to celtic but not speaking to or persuading Leigh in the way I guess McPake would have.

Surely not. I read on here that we missed out on him. 😂

Maybe we didn't pick up the phone because we didn't want you

The article doesn't say Hibs put in a bid.

Can be summarised as Hibs didn’t make him an offer.

If we were that interested we'd have signed him on a pre-contract in January. Or when he was a free agent. Or enquired about a loan instead of getting Scott. Or enquired about a loan after Murphy got injured.

The fact that our only "interest" came after he was set to sign for Dundee makes me doubt that any serious interest existed.

I suspect what happened was he agreed to sign for Dundee and hibs made an enquiry, we were told he had agreed to join Dundee and we left it at that. In the mixed up world of Scottish football that means he turned us down to sign for Dundee.

Probably not a bad position for Hibs to be in really.

If he does well for Dundee and keeps himself out of bother then there's every chance we can pick him up as a free agent in the summer. His words there hardly suggest he would be close minded to such a move. If he flops then we lose nothing.

Personally not bothered about this, I don't want him at Hibs after his antics over the summer.

Better off not going there for me.

He's here!

Does he mean he tried calling Hibs himself when he heard we were interested?

If we had been genuinely interested it sounds as though he'd have joined us in a flash. Part of me senses he doesn't fit with Jack Ross's plan but if he was that easily available I'd have been happy enough to have him back. Carries a bit of baggage but still a top striker in my book.

The whole article is poorly written. Omits to mention McPake and Griffiths were also team-mates at Hibs as well as Livi.

James McPake...I liked that guy. Associated with some our worst ever results but a really sound pro nevertheless and he's surprised me with how well he's done at Dundee.

Agree but no doubt the clamour to sign him in the summer will be deafening.

Ditto. There’s a fair chance that his shortcomings will resurface at Dundee and we will be heaving a sigh of relief that we sidestepped the issue. I won’t complain if he does a bit of damage to our opponents along the way tho’.

Maybe it was the boy running that rubbish twitter rumours page that “told” Leigh we were in for him.

It’s actually a fairly straight forward situation. As the window is drawing to a close, we were no closer to getting the striker deal done so we spoke to Celtic about the loan. They accepted it on the same terms as they did with Dundee. That allowed Hibs the chance to keep that as an option but as the day drew to a close they didn’t move on it in a similar way to take with other clubs, agents and players.

What you will find is there is a hell of a lot of unseen work in the window that won’t come to fruition in terms of contingency planning and having players there ready to move on. For one reason or another these options can disappear as the player elects to go elsewhere, club can’t replace them etc. We didn’t get the striker we wanted and elected not to just bring in someone for the sake of it. The free agent market may be an option and we will defo look at that.

The McGrath one was more fortuitous as his move to boro broke down. We seen that as an opportunity and went for it but didn’t happen. Suspect we will miss the boat with this one in January unfortunately but we did try which for me again shows ambition and if a player comes available that fits our model we will move on it and invest even if we didn’t particularly need that position as a priority.

We are one of the only clubs in Scotland that actually are willing to pay transfer fees, that to me tells me all about the planning and player identification homework we do and fills me with much confidence going forward.
