Next to Beckenbauer, Müller was probably Germany's most celebrated football player.

A prolific goalscorer who netted 68 goals in 62 games for West Germany and 398 for Bayern Munich in 453 appearances.

Plagued by alcohol problems, Müller became pretty much a recluse apart from his trainer role with Bayern Munich's amateur team and shied away from most publicity.

RIP Gerd

Just announced on BBC news.

RIP Gerd

The quintessential goal poacher par excellence. Give him half a yard of space and half a second in the box and the ball almost certainly ended in the back of the net.
