View Full Version : Pre-match music

Good god my head's still banging now.
Not much point five minutes before kick off telling the crowd to crank up the noise when everything is completely drowned out. Didn't even turn it off until the game had started, can't we have a few moments at least to get a bit of atmosphere ourselves?

A bit of music half an hour before kickoff is alright, but you’re right, invasive sound systems right up to kickoff are one of several reasons why atmosphere struggles to get going at the start of games

Usually I’m first to moan but didn’t think there was anything wrong with it.
Nice to have a PA system you can hear from - though I sat in middle of east for 1st game and sat towards side last night and definitely more clear in middle ? Maybe just acoustics. But the information is definitely more clear.
Last night there was a slight delay in kick off so felt like players waiting about and assume music played to keep people entertained.

I think it’s good we have a set playlist just before teams come out etc. Good to have Hibs songs and make it unique with a bit of build up music. All clubs do it.

Barrie Wilkins is very active on Twitter and Instagram. He uses @hibsannouncer on Twitter. He's a nice guy.
If people have requests then give him a shout. I'm sure it was the case a couple of years back that the pre match playlist was put together with input from the players.

You’ll never please everyone, and often just here the complaints. I agree and thought it was good last night, I was in the east and it got me going before the game, much prefer it to how it’s been in the past.

There's times it's needed, times it adds to the atmosphere, and then occasions where it's completely unnecessary.
Maybe it was improved speakers in the West, but from about 7.35 to kick off it felt relentless and never gave a quarter-full stadium any sort of chance to make themselves heard.
Barrie does a good job with the mic, but less is more the with music at times.
I'd also say if clubs are all about 'the matchday experience' or whatever they want to call it, then however they set up the stadium is more than fair game for reviews, good or bad.

Not having a go at Greencastle but it does annoy me when music is plyed right up to the first whistle, like it's some kind of challenge for the DJ.
Are people's attention span so short they need constant entertaining? Maybe Hibs are afraid people will walk out if there is no music for a few minutes.
I think the music should stop when the teams enter the pitch before kick off.

Music is fine but switch it off a good bit earlier, it’s fans that create atmosphere.

Last night definitely a delay waiting for KO.

I’ve always thought that if we should have hibs songs/Hibs related songs only in say the last 10 minutes or so before KO, rather than just random chart songs. There’s plenty to pick from so it wouldn’t have to be the exact same songs every week either

Did they change something ?

What I don’t understand about the blaring crap music being played right up to kick off is that for the last 12 months or so we’ve been told ‘football isn’t the same without fans’.
As soon as we’re back it’s business as usual - no chance to create a pre-match atmosphere.
I understand you can’t please everyone but it seems to me that when you give certain people a microphone and a sound system they don’t know how to operate them properly.

Was horrendous, volume in West Lower was deafening, no opportunity for conversation until match starts.
So we are sitting there with ears ringing up until kick off, then trying to converse when we should be concentrating on the match/getting behind the team.
Take into account its hard enough to hear people when they are wearing a mask, and that shouting is to be avoided, its a nonsense.
Really hope that when we van get back to ST seats in FF that its going to be more bearable.

The idea that if you turn the music down the atmosphere is suddenly going to improve is just wrong. The atmosphere at run of the mill league games is going to be the same regardless if it's played or not.
Most people at ER don't sing for these type of games and I suspect those suggesting it would be improved if the music was turned down are in that majority and don't start songs anyway.

Also to the Hibs announcer - please don’t try and announce information when the fans are clapping the teams out as people can’t hear you. Maybe say Hibernian FC and let the teams out then once crowd calm down then read out home starting 11 team to quickly try get the fans going.

Hi Everyone,
Barrie here. Firstly every bit of feedback given is hugely appreciated and I take on board the comments that have been passed by everyone. As many posters have mentioned it’s an impossible task to please everyone’s musical preferences.
Comments on chart music, we have two top ten hits on the playlist at the moment and a lot of it has been replaced with more upbeat tunes at a request of the players. Some of the music suggested such as Shipping Up to Boston , The Jam etc was all music that was heavily featured pre covid and was requested that we remove.
I am working and have suggested with the media team that we have a playlist selected by the players each week and we are thinking about collaborating this with the launch of the new screens (date looking to be around September time) but not yet confirmed.
With the installation of new screens you will hear a lot less music and more video features such as player interviews , sponsor content and fan led content.
With regards to volumes, I’m pitch side and I can only feedback to the control box DJ (who cannot hear a thing outside) so we are doing our best to try get those levels correct. Right now we are on limited attendance and I feel the volume sounds quite loud although levels in the box are at a limited level. We had comments yesterday that there was zero atmosphere before the game because we were previously getting feedback the levels (from Thursday) were extremely high. It’s a catch 22.
I have now been in the position at the stadium for 10 years and for that period of time we have had a very very poor system. The new system is a huge investment from the club and I expect as the next stages of that plan come together we will see a much better balance but it’s still very much a work in progress.
With regards to stopping music 10 minutes before kick off. As far as I am aware there is not a single team in the country that does this (I’m glad to be told otherwise) but I personally feel that it would have a huge impact on the build up both for us the fans and for the players entering the pitch. A very very different situation.
I’m always really greatful and open to all forms of input at the end of the day it’s been bloody rubbish without you guys in the stadium so now everyone is gradually coming back it’s important that I work with the club and most importantly the fans to get the balance right.
Hope this response helps a little but if not please feel free to drop me a message on Twitter @barriestweeting or on Instagram BarrieWilkins I’ll do my best to help.
Thanks guys

Thanks Barrie for the updates.
I get it’s the catch 22 part. Seems like a certain generation doesn’t like the upbeat stuff and others love it.
I think if the music help the players perform go for it - guess though the fans need to have a good experience too.
I think the best way is to get a settled pre - match build up and like others have said something unique to Hibs - even if it changes slight every season . Newcastle and other clubs have certain songs which they use before players come out the tunnel and just before and seems to work well.
Hopefully we can get back to having flags etc as players come or as that adds colour.
The best prematch ever at ER was when Grant Scott was on the pitch before Athens getting the crowd up for the game. Again different to a Ross county 5,000 crowd but I know at Euro tournaments they do a good with the kick off countdown etc.
