View Full Version : Lack of buzz around first day of the league season?
He's here!
31-07-2021, 12:13 PM
Maybe it's the impact of Covid/lack of crowds for so long and the fact the Euros have not long finished, but I must admit I'm not feeling much of a buzz around the new Scottish football season. Anyone else feel similar or is everyone raring to go?
I think as I've got older I've lost that sense of fevered anticipation that used to herald the start of the season, but I'll maybe get more into it if Hibs string together some good early season form. As things stand I'm enjoying the Olympics and not really too bothered for the football.

Not too interested in the opener but game tonight should be a good watch. Really looking forward to tomorrow and some European football during the week. Enjoyed the summer break but with crowds now coming back and the fact we have a pretty good team this is probably a season i’ve been looking forward to more than most.

Yes I’m feeling the same, for the second year in a row I’m looking at the possibility of having bought three season tickets and not being guaranteed to see every game live in the stadium.
Going to the game and sitting in the same seat beside my mates and other fans I’ve got to know around me over the last 25 years is what I enjoy most about the games now.
If we get back to every game in our own seats soon I’ll get over it but sitting in random seats every second game doesn’t appeal and can see me losing interest and drifting away from the game which would be a real shame.

In a way, i`m quite looking forward to the randomness of not knowing where I will be sitting!
I have sat in all parts of the ground over the decades but have spent in last 20 years or so in the Famous Five with the kids and now have moved to the FFU. I`ll just miss my comfy seat with the arm rests lol

I am absolutely buzzing for tomorrow. An away trip with the Hibs. Even tempted to break my Sunday rule and have a few bevvies (can't do Monday if I'm on the sauce the day before).
Couldn't give a toss about the huns, Yams or the lesser greens.
It's all about the Hibs... Let's start again, 3 points out the traps. [emoji1184][emoji1184][emoji1184]

It's quite worrying actually.
Maybe just old age but I have no inclination to try and get tickets at the moment. I've contributed my season ticket money as usual but I haven't got the usual start of season buzz either.
Until we get back to what I would call normal I can't visualise being back at Easter Road for a while yet.

I just can't get interested tbh.
Didn't bother with the Arsenal friendly or the European tie, didn't bother trying for a ticket for tonorrow and haven't got round to entering the ballot for Thursday yet. I've got plans for tomorrow so unlikely to watch our game either (I assume it's on TV and not just moved because we played on Thursday).
Until I can get back to football properly I really can't be arsed with it. Football has always been more about the social aspect of the day for me, be that a blether with my parents or beers with mates. The football is a side show. Probably not a popular opinion but it's where I am.

Yeah this is where my head is at, it feels like last season just finished and on q personal level it's been a busy couple of months so I never got to the point where I was missing the Scottish league.
Game today held no interest to me but I can't wait for tomorrow. Unfortunately I'll be driving up from Yorkshire so can't make the game but later kick off means I've something to listen to for my drive.

Going but still trying to work up some enthusiasm for JR's Hibs. Last time I was "buzzing" for the start of the season was 2018-19. Dont think I've recovered from the start to 2019-20.

I think it was the dire cup final against St Johnstone and acceptance of the fact that this current group of Hibs players do not have the bottle for truly big occasions.

Can associate with a lot of that. There was a part of me watching the opener today with a depressing realism that Rangers will walk the league and there’ll be no contest whatsoever. Realistically it wasn’t as if I thought we’d challenge but every so often it hits home that we’re taking part in a league we will never stand a chance of winning.
I had no interest in the Arsenal game and then contracting COVID ruled me out of the Saint Coloma match. I’m in for the Rijeka ballot though so will see if that whets my appetite at all!

We’re a good team, which has strengthened on last season and not lost our best players. The team did really well last season, they should have folk right behind them, imho.

Few things to consider..
Supporters habits have changed last few months - but it’s amazing how human nature can change and fans will once again be looking forward to going to ER / away games. Getting back to ER was an amazing feeling and for those who haven’t been back yet - you will love it when you get a chance.
The league will be 1 horse race - usually it’s a 2 horse race but actually will make it more exciting seeing if Hibs / Hearts / Aberdeen / Celtic will get 2nd-5th.
The huns being on TV against Livi at home really isn’t the most exciting 1st game to start the league - least there will some drama in the 8pm game last night.
Hibs are putting pieces in place to grow as a club - they will face challenges along the way. I’m looking forward to see how we do this season and how Jack Ross does in a tougher league than last year. He needs to get the team to be consistent but also pick up points against the rivals mentioned above.
Finally maybe it’s just me but really didn’t see much promotion of the new league - Euro 2020 / Wimbledon/ Olympics have been all getting so much coverage. But Scottish football needs to work harder to promote more.

Does it? Despite it being something we don’t do very often?
We have been getting closer and closer to it recently though so it seems strange to me for people to say they’ve no confidence in us achieving it.

Exactly. If we were pumped out cups in early rounds I wouldn't have confidence in us. We don't win trophies often but we are getting very close. Considering we skooshed 3rd I have a lot of confidence in this side.

Couldn’t agree more re. your last point. The sooner clubs start to recognise that point of view the better. Otherwise we’re condemned to former chief executives writing vacuous corporate slogans such as “how ambitious is your club?” on letters for season ticket renewals

I’m exactly the opposite, opinion eh!
If you look at the opportunity they were given, I don’t see that as doing really well, folk will agree and disagree. To put in 3 performances like they did in those games, that’s where my lack of confidence comes from. Would love to be proved wrong

The European game I had pizza and beers with mates before the game and then we sat together at the match. Chatted and had a laugh throughout. Excited for today, really hopeful we can go further than we did last year.
Think we have strengthened on last year and obviously kept our better players so far.
The last time we won on the opening day away at Motherwell was class. Hopefully more of the same today.

I find the site as a whole pretty supportive with a variety of views, positive and negative, being expressed as you would expect. There are a few posters who can’t tolerate any criticism of the club at all and that often results in petty bickering etc. It can make threads look much more negative then they actually are.

Definitely. There are only 2 or 3 consistently negative posters and the same amount who feel they have to counteract that at every opportunity. Other than that its a good mix of positivity in general and those like me who just need a wee bit more convincing about this Hibs team.

Given I'm used to supporting Hibs from a distance, I'm as excited as I've ever been about our new season starting. Can totally empathise with the regulars who will struggle until they're back in the stands though. Seeing and hearing even just a handful of fans at Easter Road recently has been so refreshing.
I love the new kits, I love European football, I'm excited by our signings, I'm excited by our senior management and executive team, I'm encouraged by the progress made by our manager. All in all, I can't wait for kick off later. Hibs are back babyyyy.

Your post might be a non sequitur in this thread, but it does explain the headline I saw earlier about Sevco refusing to acknowledge Cinch as the new sponsors of the Scottish leagues.
A good example of how the Scottish game gets in its own way, resulting in it being undervalued by broadcasters and sponsors.

I've got slightly mixed feelings, but I'd definitely sway more towards positive than negative.
Not yet have I been back to a game, I'm not going today but I'm in the ballot for the Euro game. Until I actually go to a game, it will be hard to say hand on heart that "football is back".
The team did fine last season, league finish was good and losing in the latter stages of the cups is an improvement on losing in the early stages, but there's still a nagging feeling that we might have done even better, and the team wasn't always a good fun watch - we failed to convince quite often. FWIW rather than berate Hibs.net in general or other posters, I fully respect everybody's right to hold their opinion, positive or negative, because certainly based on last season's showing you can find anything you like back up your argument. They're all merited.
Re this season - it always feels a bit funny when European football kicks in early and the season comes round fast when there has been international football over the summer. It doesn't feel that long since last season ended, a season that ended with a kick in the nuts.
This team and this manager have suffered from not having fans in grounds. When you're at a game, almost any win is a good result, however it is achieved. The perspective when watching it from home is totally different, it's easier to pick up on negatives, especially when there is zero atmosphere and no fans in the ground. Some of our hardest ground out victories last season would have been great to be at (last minute penalty to beat St Johnstone away for example) but the team don't get the credit they really deserve for those results.
The transfer activity business also makes this season seem a bit weird. We've not done much, and it's normally nice to have a nice few shiny signings ready to get started. It almost doesn't feel like a distinct new season, rather a continuation of last season. I don't know about anyone else but I also feel like we have a sword hanging over us a bit when it comes to players leaving. There are 3 or 4 of our better players who may well leave in the coming weeks, all of which would weaken us quite severely and may prove problematic to replace, especially with little time to do so.
So, a bit of a mixed bag. Am I looking forward to it though? Damn right I am, watching Hibs and then blethering pish about them is what I do, it's always great to get the summer months out the way and get back to the real thing.

The European game I had pizza and beers with mates before the game and then we sat together at the match. Chatted and had a laugh throughout. Today there’s four of us going in the car and we have tickets for the game….what are you waiting for that we can’t do already ? Give it a go. You’ll be surprised how normal it feels….

I want to be able to walk into a pub, stand at the bar, order a pint, stand where I like them go back to the bar when I'm ready. I want to be able to turn up at the game at a time of my choosing, sit in my own seat, go down to the concourse at HT and have a blether/shake hands/let on to people that I know.
I accept there is good reason why that stuff is still off limits but it doesn't change the fact that it eats into my enthusiasm for both the pub and football. I was told how normal the pub felt, gave it a go and frankly it was nothing like normal. I get we are all different. Some people think table service and the more controlled nature of pubs is great. Some people are just happy to be at ER even if some of the things I have mentioned are off limits. For me the whole day comes together as one and if you take out 1 or 2 elements it just isn't the same.
I'll go to league games if I get a chance but as I said above making any extra effort isn't something I can get motivated to do. Good luck to those who are going to the game today or Thursday, I'm sure you will all have a good time. I'm quite content to leave it for now.

I agree with pretty much all of that.
Having matches in the middle of July is weird given that there's still a month and a half of transfer window to go. It's unsettling when you start a season not knowing how much the squad will have changed by September.
SJM's involvement in matches the last time we were in Europe is a good example.
I have tickets for today but am close to not even bothering going

I am looking forward to this game. Wish we had improved the team more, but it’s a new season. I actually look forward to the Motherwell game more than the European games. Maybe if we got through this next round and had a chance of making a group stage I’d feel different. But it’s all about today and vital we pick up 3 points. A win to get us going please.

Everyone will have their own requirements - but my experience for the games this season is that other than masks and a bit of sensible distancing , the experience is much like most other games …..I think today , with close to a normal away support , will be not much different than before ..
Anyway, was just nudging you to perhaps give it a go and see what you think [emoji106]

What if some peoples' lack of buzz is influenced by the atmosphere on here? I was giving my opinion, not looking for an argument.
But yet again I'm the troublemaker.
I thought you said you were leaving it?

Your post might be a non sequitur in this thread, but it does explain the headline I saw earlier about Sevco refusing to acknowledge Cinch as the new sponsors of the Scottish leagues.
A good example of how the Scottish game gets in its own way, resulting in it being undervalued by broadcasters and sponsors.
Think I replied on the wrong thread😂

I’ve just read through the thread and don’t see this?
There’s some folk saying they can’t get too excited about the season for various reasons but no one has said they think we’re rubbish.
Yeah, TBF, that is a bit of an exaggeration... but there has been a few posts that were incredibly negative considering our 3rd place finish and the fact this season hasn't even started yet
Same boat here.
Agree, can't see me jumping through all the current hoops necessary to watch Hibs, coupled to that I see Edinburgh council exploring the implementation of congestion charges for drivers coming into town, so I would have to probably pay that to travel in from Fife to watch Hibs at ER. That will the day I finally say goodbye to ER after 40 plus years.

It could have been so much better last season but hopefully there is a platform from the positive aspects of the last campaign to build on and I am cautiously looking forward to the game despite the Doig distraction. :flag:

Perhaps, but at 78 years of age it's a long up hill walk back to Waverley and my knees aren't what they were so probably stick to TV football.

There really are a lot of people who clearly either weren't old enough or alternatively didn't care enough to have suffered years when we actually were crap.

Potentially could be a cracking season, big city derbys back, Hamilton & Killie sucked the life out of me with theyre artificial pitches them both getting relegated can only improve the SPL certainly for atmosphere.

I buzzed off to Wales and Cheshire for a week as I never seen away tickets ever being a possibility. I’ve a bit off buzz back now though as I’ve been on the glue since ten past six.

I doubt there will ever be congestion charges for driving to Leith from Fife unless you go via the town centre. Going to the European game was not that different to any other game and I think there will more fans allowed soon.

That was brilliant today, absolutely buzzing to be back at the games, and the difference to watching on tv was night and day. It was so, so good to be back. Had great company to and from the game, met up with one of the Quick Bang contributors at the game and seeing the away end bouncing for the first time in well over a year was just superb.
The next game can't come quick enough.

That was great. Quite amazing how good for my mental health I found just sitting in the sun outside Gregg's/Tesco with some Hibs fans eating a sausage roll.
Normality resuming.

Great start to the season. An away win and 3 goals, what's not to like!?
If covid/restrictions have tought us anything it is that we ought to enjoy life when it throws us things to celebrate. I tuned in to the Hearts/Celtic game last night and for the first time in my life I didn't mind who won, I just wanted to see a good game of football. I am sure Hearts fans enjoyed the result last night but it was an absolute dire game of football.
I was the same at the Euros, I couldn't comprehend Scottish fans who tuned in to cheer whoever England were playing. At the end of the day, all I wanted to see was good football.
I really hope Ross sets us up to play attacking football. Life is way too short to buy a season ticket to sit and watch dull football. Supporting Hibs will take your emotions to extreme highs and desperate lows - being honest, who would have it any other way?!
