View Full Version : What the hell does "woke" mean anyway?

I'm tired of hearing that word, it's everywhere, but I'm yet to hear anyone define it. Those I've heard use it seem to have simply substituted "woke" for "political correctness" and "social justice warriors". Is is the same thing or does "woke" have its own meaning?
I have no idea whether I am "woke" or not, and don't really care. It seems just another vapid buzzword that will likely soon die a death. I hope so anyway, as it's shocking patter.

I believe it originated in the US African American community in the 1920s and 30s. The original phrase was 'stay woke' and it meant what it said on the tin. Be awake and notice the injustices and discriminations against people of colour in the US. Until recently #woke or #staywoke was a popular and largely positive message among POC on Twitter and the like.
Over the years it spread to encompass a whole range of 'identity politics' and I think that it when it was misappropriated as a derogatory term. It's superceded other meaningless insults like 'pinko', 'leftie', 'bleeding heart' or even the relatively recent and equally misused 'snowflake'.
It's a meaningless insult that fails to disguise an inability to argue and debate a point in a coherent manner.

One of those horrendous words, like gammon, that people who claim to like a fair debate use, but don't really mean it and basically just like people to agree with their view point.

I don't watch much TV, but each time I switch on the box somebody seems to be complaining about someone or something being "woke", which tells me precisely nothing. Are we no longer capable of explaining our thoughts in coherent sentences?

I often have LBC on and try to avoid the gelatinous charisma vacuum that is Nick Ferrari as much as possible. He had Keir Starmer on the show and with the opportunity to quiz the under fire leader of the opposition decided to ask “Are you a woke bloke?”.
If that’s was my station I’d have fired him on air there and then. It’s used by idiots who can’t debate or use reasoning to save themselves.
What is the opposite, to stay "asleep"?

I would have told him to **** off on air then followed it up with "is that woke"?:greengrin

Words like Woke, Gammon, Snowflake, etc, are usually used as an insult when somebody is too stupid or lazy to think of a reasonable argument.

That view won't go down too well on here, Gammon has become the IT word by some.

I love the word gammon.
It’s a bit overused, but I think it still has it’s place when addressing folk quoting the Daily Mail with tales of “you couldn’t make it up etc” whilst spouting dog whistle rubbish.
Woke has it’s place as well, and it’s a handy derogatory word for those at an extreme end of that particular scale. Unfortunately it has evolved to encompass all views that don’t necessarily sit with the user’s narrow world view (normally very right wing).
The words themselves aren’t an issue - it’s the misuse and overuse that are.

I watched a programme the other night, maybe Debate Night? A Scottish female comedian defined it perfectly. Can't remember her name, a vocal Indy supporter if that helps. She said it was basically just not saying insulting and unkind stuff that will cause offence. I understood it as if you're basically a decent person, you can consider yourself "woke".

She sounds like a hilarious comedian…
Out of interest, who decides what is insulting/unkind and what will cause offence? Is it the Scottish, female, nationalist comedian?

She was sharing her view on it as a member of a serious panel, she wasn't doing stand up, I thought she explained it well. I think most right minded people know what an insult or unkind remark is.

Also from the Guardian..
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/nov/09/woke-word-meaning-definition-progressive
Someone who is woke is constantly inspecting every institution in society, looking for the presence of racism, sexism, and other forms of pervasive prejudice.
What separates someone who is woke from someone who is merely progressive is not only this vigilance and awareness but a fervent belief that everyone must be enlisted into their social causes at all times and that the end justifies the means when battling injustice.

Not necessarily. I think most people who are decent and "right minded" know not to say unkind or offensive things. They think before they speak. Some people look to intentionally upset people by being unpleasant.

Eh?
You can be a right minded person and still intend on causing offence.
Sometimes you might want to be offensive, or are you suggesting that's a thing of the past?

I think you might be getting right minded and right wing minded confused. Why would any decent right minded person willingly want to cause offence to anyone presumably just because their views are different. If they deliberately want to cause offence they’re no right minded IMO.

If you tell some one to * off or similar, the chances are you’re doing it deliberately and aren’t worried about offending them!
There are plenty of occasions where people legitimately cause offence to others everyday. Perfectly right minded people swear on occasion, it might cause offence to some.

According to Mark Dolan, the 'woke West' is responsible for emboldening Putin:

Yeah but he's a dick who works for GB News, clips of which Putin is using as pro-Russian propaganda.
Putin is responsible for invading Ukraine, not Greta Thunberg or some gay dude messing about "him/he/she/they".

I've seen a big overlap of pro Russian sentiment online from the same people who were pro trump and also anti vax/restrictions. Like the anti vax prick in the above video
