So now with SDG retired what are your thoughts on number 2 being retired?

Yes definitely a thing that Birmingham got laughed at with Jude Bellingham and some people could argue that without the winning cup final goal SDG would not be legend status.

I say retire the jersey.

Nah not for me, the future recipient should be proud to wear that number and aspire to be worthy of it.

Daft idea, do we retire the numbers 4, 7 and 9 shirts for Stanton, Smith and Reilly as well?

Nah

Keep it going of course. Just make sure that whoever inherits that number understands the expectations that comes along with it.

I respect the sentiment, but I don't think we should be retiring any of our 1-11 squad numbers. They're meant to be the most important positions in the team (doesn't always work that way, but you get me), so I think it's important that new players can come in and have a chance of taking them.

Immortalise SDG in pretty much any other way, rename a stand, build a statue, convert Arthur's Seat into a Mount Rushmore style sculpture of his head, but I'd just leave our 1-11 out of it. His squad number was one of the less iconic parts of David's career with us IMO.

Never. Some aspiring youngster will be dreaming of being the next number 2 to score the winner in a cup final.

Was only a thought that came into my head as no one was assigned the number for this season. Maybe a new signing will take it.

Sounds utterly daft to me.

No.

And while we're not doing that, could we also just ditch squad numbers and have a team numbered 1-11, please?

No - its daft.

Nah. Don't want to end up like clubs like Inter or Milan who've retired half their numbers and end up having to use stupidly high ones all the time.

We’d have to remove names from jerseys in that case, pretty sure that’s why the squad numbers were introduced.

And in answer to original OP it’s a no for me.

Not for me.

And while we are at it, someone better not suggest retiring the number 16 shirt either! That would be embarrassing.

Not retired but held in high regard. You wear #2 for Hibs and you best understand what it means. Same as #4

Anybody wearing any shirt for Hibs should have a real understanding of what that shirt means. Sadly too many signings over the years just didn't get it

I think having one end of Hampden named after him is probably enough.

He never died, so not for me. That’s the only time I’d expect a number to be retired in honour of someone. Great player and leader, time moves on and as said above, future right backs should be desperate to get that number.

I think the number 01 has been retired by Hibs, that's the only one I can think of that the club has pensioned off.:greengrin

Absolutely not. That saying ‘no player is bigger than the club’ applies to SDG too.

The no.2 shirt should feel special to anyone given the honour of wearing it. Hopefully they will do great things too.

Exactly this. Like the 7 at United, 9 at real Madrid etc etc

To be fair Inter have only retired #3 and #4 and Milan #3 and #6. Napoli #10.

I think what you see now is players sticking with their high youth numbers all the way through their careers like the young Celtic players do. Tierney #63 McGregor #42 McGeady #46 Forrest #49 or a higher number as the 1-11 is already taken.

There’s more of a case for retiring the no.16 shirt because it had little significance before Lewis.

But still no.

Since you are such an authority, which player is going to take number 2 this year then?

A right back possibly to cover McGinn

I like the idea but I don't think it's something really done in football is it?

I know there are a few examples but whilst it's commonplace in the NFL, and even then some teams go way OTT, it's still quite a novelty in football.

Probably not for me but if it happened I'd understand why.

Potentially but I just think that a guy right in the door who’s not going to be first choice for the position might think twice about taking the number of a club legend like Gray. Similar to Porteous not wanting to take the number 5 jersey a couple of years ago. Then again, they might not be that sentimental.

The NFL is slightly different as your restricted to which numbers you can wear depending on your position, status within the team.

Exactly. It's a no from me but make sure that the next recipient knows what his predecessor achieved and gave to the club (and so on for a very long time)
