In the space of 15 minutes I have seen three different posters on Facebook, including one in a Hibs supporters group, use 'OF' instead of 'HAVE'

EG ..... Hibs fans 'of' been dying to see Scott Allan return.

You see this all the time now WTAF is going on

Usually it’s mistaking an abbreviation of have, eg. would’ve becomes would of. Don’t think I’ve seen one like your example?

Yes I'd agree, can't say I've seen an example of op's peeve. Maybe a bad example?

I read that exact post earlier and wanted to rip my eyes out. It’s bad enough when used after should or could, but that’s honestly so common now I only feel the slightest flicker of irritation but that one about Scott Allan was the worst one I’ve seen.

During that brief but annoying period when it was trendy to have 'heartfelt' and 'meaningful' quotes as part of your interior decoration, a friend of my wife's had "I could of danced all night" painted, in elaborate script no doubt, on her living room wall. She didn't have the heart to tell her.

It gets on my wick. Mikey Stewart - who I like - is actually terrible for using it verbally. And there are a few posters on here who are serial offenders.

Edit - this is in the context of the more common abuse sorry, i.e., following could or should.

We have to accept that language is constantly changing and this sort of thing is simply that in action. Of course it doesn't help knowing that it is changing for the worse! :-)

Years of teachers at school saying it's fine as long as we understand what you're writing. A generation of dummies in the making.

Hadn’t given this much thought .. but just come off a hilarious Facebook rant from English fans about Italy being dirty cheats and should have had 2 players sent off .. I digress .. and the improper use of “of” was rampant.

It was all “should of been sent off” “would of won” etc

My posts are likely riddled with daft spelling mistakes, but the words could've, should've, would've etc being butchered like this is infuriating. It doesn't even look right, and it's not something you can blame autocorrect on!!

I've read that people who hire just put applications straight in the bin when this type of thing is in the covering letter 😂
