Terry Butcher spoke very well about him this morning on SSN, fond memories of that Ipswich team and Mariner playing for England.

A terrible shame. A player I mostly remember from my Panini sticker collecting days, but I was just watching a Big Match Revisited from 1980 this morning in which he was playing. What an achievement it was for Bobby Robson to take a club like that to such great heights.

Great player in a great side full of great players. He’ll be mourned at Ipswich Town.

That is sad news. Remember him well as a classy striker at Ipswich and for England - and later at Arsenal. Seems like he was one of the good guys too. RIP Paul.

Really sad news this.

He was a great forward and a person I looked up to as a kid. He just 'had' it.

RIP son

Remember him scoring the goal when England beat us 1 0 at Hampden in the home nations early 80's.

1982.
He was a cracking player. He didn’t score in 1980 when we lost 2-0 but he was a real handful that day as well. Sad to think he is gone.

I have great memories of watching that Ipswich side.

The only FA Cup final I have been to was 1978, great side for the next few years.

Great player in a very very good team. Mills, Butcher, Mariner, Gates, Wark, Muhren, Thysen, Osman, Brazil. Just off the top of my head. What a side they had back then, jeez I feel old. Sad to hear of his passing

Paul Cooper, Russel Osman, Kevin Beattie, Alan Hunter, Brian Talbot, Burley, David Geddes, Clive Woods and cup final hero, Roger Osborne. They also tried to get George Best in November 79 but he went to Hibs instead [the money on offer was a big attraction].

A good player Paul Mariner and as others have said part of a really good Ipswich team. Fought brain cancer from what I can gather. Very brave. RIP Paul.

I was just a young kid when we beat them 2 1 in 1976 and 1977, so got the idea that beating England is what we did routinely. Don't think we've won many after 77

RIP Paul. At my age, when you see an older footballer’s name at the top of a thread, it’s unfortunately and invariably bad news. I remember Paul as a very talented centre forward.

We've only played them 8 times since the home internationals ended in the 1980s. We won the second leg of our 2000 Euro championship play off against them 1-0 but were aready 2-0 down from the first leg. IIRC our last 'proper' win against England was 1981. John Robertson (the Notts Forest version) penalty I think.

He played for them back in the 1970s before going to Ipswich. May still be their top scorer?

A product of Chorley FC, and probably our most famous son.

Still had very close ties with the club too.

RIP.

Plymouth Argyle are the first team I saw him play for, against Notts County, maybe around 1974 or so. Would have been the old Third Division I think. He was a handful then and formed a prolific partnership with a guy called Billy Rafferty. I think Plymouth gained a couple of promotions when they were around.

Good player and a gentleman by all accounts. Rest in Peace, Paul.

I seem to remember Billy Rafferty being a top striker for Carlisle way back in my youth. He and Paul Mariner must have been a lethal pairing.

That's him, tamig. I think he went from Plymouth to Carlisle, did well and went on to play for some sizeable clubs.
