Sad to think that we'll never see him crashing in to tackles down our right hand side again, but probably the right decision.
Living legend that we'll hopefully get a chance to thank on the pitch at Easter Road when we're all back in.

I remember taking a huge tantrum when we signed him as I couldn’t believe that was the calibre of player we were signing to get out the championship.
Probably not my finest moment to choose from on .net and there’s a few shockers to choose from.
Well played SDG.

Hopefully we get a chance to show our appreciation some time soon.
That goal will always be the defining moment of his time here but he offered us so much more than that. He was exactly the type of character we needed to get the club back on it's feet after a dismal few years of what often felt like terminal decline.
Glad he is sticking around.

Good decision by Hibs and the player. Hopefully he’s as effective as a coach as he was a player. The one thing that can never been taken away is his legionary status as a cup final winning captain and goal scorer. I look forward to his testimonial, whilst he’s not done 10 years he certainly deserves it.

If ever there was someone who could conjure up a thread of unanimous opinions on hibs.net it's SDG. He's been a great leader of the club and his overall performance, as well as the header itself, on 21/5/16 won't ever be forgotten.
It'll be a shame not to see him again though, in a playing capacity at least.

I don’t think I could understate how high a regard I have or what level of affection I carry for that cup winning team. We were on our knees post Butcher and although it took three seasons to come back up, we had a team full of characters, endeavour and good football. 4-0 vs Rangers, the El Alagui derby, 2-2 at Tynie, the cup final and many more. A very, very easy team to love and SDG was an immovable part of it.
One of the greatest captains in our history. I’m so glad he’s remaining at the club.

A true legend of our club. Forgetting about that winning goal for a minute, came in as Stubbs first signing when the club was at one of it's lowest ever ebbs and helped galvanise us on the park. A true leader, heart of a lion and i always felt we really missed him when he wasn't in the team. The fact he kept on going in THAT cup final to score the winning goal not long after he took a dull one says it all about him. Lesser men would have gone off and hoped for the best in extra time. Not him.
Thank you David Gray for your massive contribution. Your place in the history of Hibernian Football Club is assured forever more.

There have been many players who have played for Hibs more times, there are plenty of players who have scored more than he has for Hibs, there have been better right backs at Hibs but none have had the effect that SDG has had on this club. That goal ripped away 114 years of hurt for us, it destroyed our rivals songbook in one beautiful header. He brought the club and the fans back together. He is captain fantastic, he is a Legend to every Hibbie out there. I will miss him not playing for us anymore but I am so happy he is staying at the club in a coaching roll and I am looking forward to his testimonial.

Right decision to retire. Last season we could see he was losing some aspects of his game. So best to "go" before we are thinking he is a weak link in the team.
When the book is published on our 150th anniversary, he will surely be on the front cover, he will forever be one of the untarnished club legends.

His drive, leadership and will to win on that day will always be over shadowed by that header, and rightly so, but he led by example for every one of the 92 plus minutes. Longer he stays at the club, in any capacity, the better in my opinion.

Glad he’s got a position that he can focus on and progress now, thought it was quite sad the way it went for him last year in that he was there every week but you knew he wasn’t really going to contribute playing wise.
Bit surprised that’s him in to full time coaching with only being 33, thought he might have went somewhere to play for a couple of years. Even though we’ve hardly seen him play for a couple of years it was odd seeing him as an actual coach in the Twitter video Hibs put up.

Easily my favourite ever Hibs player.
Not the best of course. But he was always solid, dependable and gave 100%. He was down injured like 2 minutes before the end of the cup final. Could have done the easy and went off injured.
But he did the tough thing, got up, got on with it and got the reward he richly deserved.

I’ll never forget that goal! Had family folks round and was banned from putting TV on, the updates came from the Prom bar across from where I live (seemed full of The Rangers muppets) anyway, the pub erupted when they went 2-1 up and I thought that was it. So got more and more drunk with the family and forgot about it until my son called near full time. “Dad, dad, looks like it’s going to extra time and penalties!” I said “we’ve equalised?” And then all I heard from my 16 year old was “ya f*****g beauty! We’ve scored!” And then the game was over! My boy was shouting down the phone “Gray’s won us the cup” I was totally shell shocked! I’ll never forget that day. Suffice to say, from being drunk I went on to get hammered!!

No offence, but I'd go for divorce over being banned from watching hibs in a cup final.

No worries mate, it was one of the most amazing days ever and that lady (family friend but classed as family), was awesome and totally enjoyed Hibs winning the cup. I’ll never forget and is a memory etched in my consciousness forever ❤️ I’ll always celebrate both.

My old man got a huge boost when he received a phone call from SDG shortly after my mum died in the first week of lockdown last year. Obviously "that goal" speaks for itself too. 😃
That's a beautiful touch.
