Normally after the Gilmour Covid thing the next episode in the Scotland saga would be results going against us tonight. But they didn't. Things are changing, we can do this!

Possibly. But having a home game, to qualify for the last 16 of a major tournament, for the first time ever, will probably never happen again in most of our lifetimes.

They were in the last 16 in 74 and 78. But I know what you mean. It would be nice to finally get out of a group.

Things are becoming clearer as to who Scotland might face in the last 16 as well;

There's every chance we could play Sweden in the last 16. Not exactly easy but it could be a lot worse.

If we can beat Croatia tomorrow I will be happy whether we qualify for the next round or not. I don't think that we are that far away from being able to pick a starting eleven from players regularly getting a game in the EPL and I would be content to see Clarke given time to make the most of that.

What an absolutely massive game. Not a huge lover of international football but I've really allowed myself to get caught up in the buzz. It's been fantastic. We've really missed this over the last 23 years.

No one has ever been close to that. Greece never had one shootout. Hopefully Scotland are the first but sadly I can't see a win tonight. Never know though

In France 2016, Portugal won it. They were probably the least impressive winners ever. Drawn in an easy group they drew all three of their games, got through as best 3rd place team with 3pts and a zero GD, behind Hungary and Iceland. Then they got through in extra time in the round of 16, beat Poland on penalties, Wales 2-0 in the semis and France in extra time in the final, winning the tournament despite only winning one game out of seven in regulation!

Goes to show how teams look in the group stages isn’t a good guide as to who’s going to win it. Lots of World Cup/euros winners haven’t looked great early on. That’s why blowhards like Neville etc should wind their necks in a bit.

The annoying thing for me was that none of the games listed apart from Morocco were eff ups - the damage was done in the previous games. Being the only unbeaten side in the tournament but not scoring enough against Zaire is the one that really niggles me.

Agree about Zaire scored two goals in first half and seemed happy with it also remember Brazil scoring their third goal against Zaire with the goalie fumbling it in the net though our first against Zaire was similar. Morocco I think we're African champions however that was a shocker of a game with Leighton and a few others having a mare also Burley getting sent off.

The other thing I remember about 1974 is Billy Bremner missing a sitter that would have beaten the reigning world champions.

To be fair in 1986 against Uruguay , Steve Nicol missed just as easy a chance as Billy Bremner and we were playing against a team who had 10 men for over 80 minutes of the game.

When you see Bremner's chance again it isn't really a sitter, the ball more or less hits him and goes past. They showed the whole game last year late night, cracking competition with BB Man of The Match.

Nichol's chance very much a sitter.

The Andy Roxburgh period was a low for me, partly because the real legends had left the stage in the late 80s so we were left with the mclairs and mcstays instead of the dalglishs and souness’. But the expectation was still there to qualify for major tournaments because in those days we always did :dunno:

Sweden 92 was fun because of Denmark’s fairy tale and England had a mare (Brolin!) and finished bottom of their group, but we were terrible as well albeit in a ridiculously hard group with Holland and Germany, before bizarrely humping the Russians 3-0 in the final game. Roxburgh probably was a decent coach but he represented terminal decline and was there for ages, everybody wanted him gone. But then it just got worse :boo hoo: I’ve been working with a 25 year old recently, we talk a lot of football and i still can’t believe he’s never seen us at a major tournament before now….

God that was an awful experience. That Uruguay side were absolutely brutal.Think it was something like the 2nd minute of the match the red card was shown. Ernie Walker the old SFA President called the Uruguayans 'The **** of the Earth' or something similar.

Our game is on STV so you should be fine. You'll have Itv4 as a plan B as well.
