There will be hell to pay for this in the coming days. Don’t envy the Ryan Air PR departments job when they come in to the office tomorrow morning.
This does seem at first glance a wanton act of state sponsored terrorism.

Don't know how ryanair have any blame over the actual incident. If the nation who's airspace tells you to land you do it, especially when there is a fighter jet next to you. Not sure on there lack of information in there statement. Terrible from Belarus though

The pilot must proceed to the airport as requested by air traffic control. Ryanair are in the clear as far as the info I have seen goes.
It would be a rash pilot who would chose to ignore such an instruction.

Belarus plant a secret agent on the flight. Secret agent then informs the pilot that there is an explosive device on board, knowing that the plane will now be diverted into Belarussian air space. Plane is then accompanied by a mig fighter and told to land at Minsk. Once landed, opposition blogger is detained and it's clear the explosives story was all made up!
Could be a movie.
It's only a matter of time before Bojo starts to target Guardian writers, bloggers and just general opposition MPs and members of the public who campaign against and highlight government wrongdoing.
You think I'm joking?

Absolutely, pilot and crews priority is their passengers safety
If they hadn’t agreed, you’d hate to wonder what would have happened

They didn’t have a choice. They have to follow air traffic control guidance.

The Ryan Air thread title is obviously facetious on my part and i totally get the pilot was left with no choice but to compile given he had a MiG 29 flying alongside them. Still though, not a great look for them.

Why do you say its not a great look? The guy could have been flying with any airline and the outcome would have been the same. The fighter flying alongside didn’t influence any decision making. They had to comply with the instructions given by air traffic control.

Ryanair had no choice here and are not to blame. If they continue to fly to and from Belarus though, then that is ‘not a good look’. And other airlines should be following suit, with backing from govts around the world. To do what they did to a commercial airline is shocking.

Dont think Ryanair were flying to Belarus. Greece to Lithuania, which is home to many Belarussian exiles. The chap that was nabbed may even have been involved in an 'alternative'news channel that broadcasts to Belarus from Lithuania to counter the state controlled media.
There is one point Ryanair can answer. Why was it flying over Belarussian air space in the first place? Obviously it was the most direct route from Athens to Vilnius so the most cost effective route but surely to God you dont take that chance?
Over to you Michael O'Leary.

Was there advice to not overfly Belarus? If not, I'm not sure why anyone would expect Ryanair to unilaterally avoid it?

It’s not a no fly zone. USAF Faslane and Dounreay nuclear power plant are, interestingly.
When I flew to Seoul the plane (KLM was the airline) diverted far to the North of North Korea to avoid their airspace, you could see it on the satellite, I assume this is a regular thing.

Looks like the boy that was detained will be facing a kangaroo court on trumped up charges and in all probability be executed.
A wee swerve around Belarus would have avoided that.

Of course they don't. I've flew over it Iraq, Syria, China, Russia, trumps America 😉 ect. Can't fly round every bam because of something unexpected

I am no fan of Ryanair, but absolutely no blame can be attached to them here. They were flying on a normal route, just like when I went over Afghanistan on a Singapore Airlines flight. There is no way Ryanair would have known that the journalist was there or that Belarus would indulge in air piracy.

I hadn’t realised they also kidnapped his girlfriend who isn’t even Belarusian. I believe she’s Russian so I can’t imagine Putin will be worrying too much. This most likely will have been approved by him personally.

Do air traffic control not dictate the routes. Ryanair couldn’t just fly any route they want without going through the procedures I would have thought.

Aircraft have to file a flight plan and unless there's a good reason ATC won't change it.
