View Full Version : What Jack Ross didn't say

In his post match interview, a visibly angry and upset Jack Ross said "I need to work hard to control my emotions and need to avoid slaughtering my players because they have generally played well and worked hard this season as our league position shows. However I can't avoid the feeling that some of the players, in fact possibly the majority, let themselves and, equally importantly, let the supporters down with that performance today. For a team to under-perform on that scale in a Cup Final is not something we should simply acknowledge and move on from and I need to accept, as do my players, that the performance was simply unnacceptable for a club of our stauture and with our ambitions to win silverware. The fact this is the third time this season we have chosen the big occasion to drop way below our usual high standards inevitably leads me to question the culture and mentality in the group. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and, as manager, I have to also reflect on my own team selection and approach to the game and acknowledge that perhaps a different approach was needed to break down a stuffy, disciplined defensive side like St.Johnston given that we have failed to deliver a blow on them in recent matches using the same formation I played today. I will also learn from this and hope it makes me and the team stronger for next season as we aim to build a winning mentality by bringing in new recruits with the mindet needed to win more consistenly in Scotland in the games that matter most. I hope our supporters take some consolation from our league position but I, and everyone at the club, acknowledge that today was an abject disappointment and it makes me more determined than ever to learn from our mistakes and inject the level of commitment and passion into our team that St.Johnston and many other Scottish teams take for granted but that for our club appears to be in short supply when it is needed most".

What he did say:
"The thing we stressed at half-time was that if they were to lose this final that they had come back in with nothing left to give, and they did. They didn’t have anything left to give physically."

Didn't appear that way to me. Plus up against a St J team decimated by covid and unable to traim for weeks and we looked less fit and played with less energy and purpose. Concerning.

Today was hugely his responsibility though, to get the team match ready, heads ready.
I watched Nisbet come out into the pitch. Face was tripping him, swiping the air about something and as far as I could see it didn’t change the whole match. None of them looked pumped and proud to be stepping out into a Scottish Cup Final.

I’ve not hear the post match interviews.

From what I’ve read he talks about “fine margins” and “can’t fault the players”

maybe what he didn’t say is - “I’m holding my hand up and take full responsibility for these performances - I appreciate this isn’t the first time - but I commit to regroup, learn and redouble our efforts to repay the fans that have stood by us throughout the pandemic”

I think he would have made his life much easier if he said what the OP came up with. I imagine most of us feel the spoof quote far more accurately describes yesterday and previous Hampden visits under Ross.

He is a manager, much like Fenlon, who would actually benefit from not doing well in the cup. Fenlon and Ross seem unable to get players up for the really big games so end up doing well getting us there but then get slaughtered for our dreadful performances on the big stage. If we had finished 3rd and got beat of Motherwell in the Scottish and Dundee beat us in the League Cup bizarrely Ross probably ends up with less criticism. We are what we are. A team full of players with good ability but perhaps not the strongest mentally and a manager who is pragmatic and not very dynamic. That means we keep winning the majority of games against teams with less resources even if it is usually a bit of a struggle. When it comes to teams with more resources either financially or in terms of a really effective game plan we look totally lost.

Just watched the Jack Ross(and Porteous) post match interview. I feel a lot of the time he comes across fairly straight and coherent in his take of a game but no, trotting out the 'fine margins' line for yesterday doesn't cut it, no siree.
We had a massive amount of time to get back into the game. He should've been distraught with what our players gave in the second half. How many saves, goalline clearances, etc. did we force?..none, what a disgrace. We even got a get out of jail free card with the missed penalty. If he doesn't realise it already, we Hibs fans want to win the Scottish Cup more than anything so anyone who chats with him please pass on these sentiments 😞

I wasnt in the right place in mind to look for post match comments so thanks for showing this. Its interesting that he mentioned that he needs to learn. My point in other threads is that he doesnt seem to learn ,bits not as if he is new to it, we are his fourth club and he helped out at Celtic on top of that. If he thinks he can learn from it and not lapse back then thats okay with me. On the other hand he hasnt addressed our poor home performances. I hope to accept the odd poor prrformance but not as many as I have seen this season and yet we finished 3rd and resched a SC final. A mix of good us and poor others perhaps.

Oops woosh moment, totally missed the point which is what woosh means. Time for s rest me thinks. If all he said was they gave their all then I dont know which match he was referring to. Thats simply not enough jeez I am worried fir us.

I noticed that as well. Something had clearly gotten to him, what it was is anyone's guess but he looked anything but a player fully focused on the job in hand. I can't help thinking back to 2012 where we had a team more concerned about what their bonuses would be than winning one of the biggest games in the clubs entire bloody history.

Don’t quite agree. The Hampden performances bar one against Dundee Utd were shocking but I reckon finishing 3rd has earned him a fair crack of the whip next season

Floating around mid table come Christmas time though & it could be curtains.

He will 100% be here next season however I can kind of see where the poster is coming from. He will again only ever be one defeat away from a crisis. There is a number of folk, on here and other social media, that already want him out. If he gets off to a slow start next season then that number will grow and grow.
