Chelsea beat Leicester last night, so we just want them to do a job against Villa (and us win the cup obviously!), so they are looking good for a Champions League spot.

Villareal are still in the race for a Europa spot in the league, but they have to play Real Madrid away on the last day of the season, and Real need to win to have any hope of winning La Liga. They also need Sociedad or Betis to not win one of their games.

If we do win the cup, then I'll be actively cheering on Chelsea in the Champions League final. Which will be odd.

This is admittedly the part of the whole mess that I've struggled most to get my head round, but I thought we needed Chelsea to finish outside the top four and win the CL?

Yes, although I don't quite understand why...

Yes, although I don't quite understand why...

Basically they promote within the same tournament where the space gets made by teams winning the tournaments, so if Chelsea win Champions League and qualify for it in the league that's an extra space there and a number of teams will be bumped up in the Champions League qualifying stages because of it, Champions of Turkey would go straight into group stage instead of play off round for example

If Chelsea win it but only qualify for Europa League then the space made available is in the Europa League and so teams that have qualified for it will benefit, winner of Scottish Cup being one of them this time round

At least that's how I understand it

Yes, although I don't quite understand why...

We need a team that would have qualified for the Europa league group via league position to be promoted to the Champions league because they won the Champions league or Europa league. Then Europa league qualifiers will get bumped up.

So that can either be:

- Chelsea finish 5th and win the CL

or

- Villareal finish 5th and win the EL

Aw well I misunderstood. What a **** show.

Unlikely the above will happen in my opinion

Cheers UEFA for screwing Scotland over at the last minute ***** 👍👍

Absolutely. I have hated them ever since Ken Bates tried to buy in to the club to get DukeBox Durie. He got DukeBox eventually without laying a glove on us. But he did manage to wrecked Partick Thistle instead. Boy that was a close call if I remember right.

They didn’t screw Scotland over at the last minute, the people who were claiming there would be guaranteed group stage football applied the wrong rebalancing methodology - UEFA never said that would happen.

So does wiki.

I suppose clarification will come soon enough. I just want to know potential opponents to plan the road trip.

If we win cup be one of PSV, Galatasary or league runners up from Austria, Denmark or Czech Republic, presuming we can't draw Celtic

Definitely as short a list as that? No potential other teams?

None of our potential opponents will be entering directly at our round. We will face a team who has lost in the Champions League Qualifying Round 2 (non-Champions route). The clubs in that round are:

Galatasaray
PSV
Celtic (can’t face them as same association)
Rapid Vienna/Sturm Graz/Lask
Midtyjylland/Brondby/FC Copenhagen
Sparta Prague/Jablonec

Seems that way according to Wikipedia, a few cup winners seem to go into their own wee path just to be fed to bigger teams

Seeded: 3 teams which enter in this round.
Unseeded: 3 losers of the 2021–22 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round (League Path), whose identity will not be known at the time of draw.

Since the 3 teams entering include the Scottish and Cypriot cup winners, I'm not so sure the terms seeded and unseeded reflect reality here!

Not in slightest! But it might work out in our/St Johnstone's favour to get seeded for the Conference Play Off round depending on if draw is made before these games are played

Good point, if Wiki is right, then that will be the case:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021–22_UEFA_Europa_Conference_League_qualifying_p hase_and_play-off_round#Seeding_4

Seeding of teams will be based on their 2021 UEFA club coefficients.[3] For the winners of the third qualifying round and losers of the Europa League third qualifying round, whose identity will not be known at the time of draw, the club coefficient of the highest-ranked remaining team in each tie will be used.

Bert Kassies site is really good for working out potential opponents for all the different potential scenarios (if we go in at play off round, if we go in at Q3 and win the tie, if we go in at Q3 and lose the tie etc.)

As more league start finishing the two pages below will fill up, showing our potential opponents at any round.

Update on England and Spain's chances of helping out Hibs or St Johnstone. Reminder - we need Chelsea or Villareal to finish 5th in their league and win a Euro trophy.

England - long shot.

Fixtures:

Chelsea away at Villa
Leicester home to Spurs
Liverpool home to Palace

If Chelsea lose by 3, Liverpool and Leicester draws are enough.
If Chelsea lose by less than 3, Liverpool draw and Leicester win is enough.
If Chelsea draw, Liverpool and Leicester both have to win.

Then Chelsea have to beat Man City in the CL.

Spain - even longer shot.

Fixtures:

Villareal away at Madrid
Betis away at Celta
Real Sociedad away at Osasuna

A Villareal draw is only any use if Betis lose (Betis have better head to head) and La Real lose by 3 (identical head to head goes to GD I think?).
If Villareal win, La Real and Betis can draw or lose.

Then Villareal have to beat Man U in EL.

I think Chelsea are the most likely to lose out on the top 4 now. Have a feeling they have the toughest tie. Might also have a mind on the final too. Not that I hink they will field a weaker team, might just play psychologically.

Villareal away to a Madrid that needs to win is a massive shot though.

No, SPFL season starts July 31st and our first tie were we to win the cup would be August 5th.
