View Full Version : Scottish Cup Final Build Up

So how do we solve a problem like St Johnstone. A tight defensive team that doesn’t suit our traditional counter attacking style. If they play their 532 will we get much joy from Boyle and Doig out wide? Should we change formation? Should we go extra man in midfield? I can see us going 442 with Boyle playing more compact to create the overload on their 3 in the middle. I really don’t want to see the long balls into the channels as I reckon St J will love that. Our 2 up top should stop them playing out from the back, and force them into longer balls which we will handle without issue.

Going to be a interesting game but not the flowing football so many of us want to see.

I think we stick with the formula that has worked well for us this season. Don’t overthink it - we will create chances and if we take them we will win the cup.

It's somewhat of a cliche but the first goal is oh so important next weekend. If we get it, St. Johnstone will have to come out a little and play more open. One thing they have been very good at is defending leads and working hard as a unit. We've created chances against them in every encounter so if our big players are firing I think we will take them this time around. There's been a steeliness the last three games and better defending. Players look focused and the fact we have so many players now got minutes on the pitch, there are options that can provide energy.

Difficult game, interesting to see how St. Johnstone prepare given their unfortunate Covid outbreak, They looked a bit leggy v Livingston having watched the game.

Tight game as they have all been this season, but the lads can do this :aok:

Did Callum Booth go off injured? Heard he had but no idea if likely to rule him out. Given Tanser also out would be interesting if he was who would line up v Boyle.

He was apparently taken off as a precaution with a tight groin.

He did Jim. Wotherspoon looked jaded too have to say, but Livi stifled him. He's on good form lately and Saintees try and get it to him as often as possible to get deliveries into the box. McGinn will need to be on his toes and our midfield might have to man-mark him. Livi were actually the better side.

Spoony is one of their biggest threats thought he was excellent in the semi final was also very good at ER in the 2 2 game. Need Gogic and other midfielders to be very aware and pick him up when they are in possession.

As has been said, the first goal is crucial.

If St Johnstone get it, they're extremely capable of holding a 1-0 lead for the rest of the game. Conversely if we get it, at some point they will be forced to start playing which opens them up to the counter.

For me the key will be speed of movement. We need to play in St Johnstone's half with players constantly moving into space and quick passes to drag St Johnstone's players out of position or to wear them down which will create gaps later. Shuttling the ball between defenders and midfielders inside our own half just takes the pace out of the game and allows them to retain their shape.

For that reason I'd prefer Hallberg to Newell. There is an argument for both at the expense of Gogic, but we need Gogic as he allows both full backs to move up and get involved supporting our attack.

Gogic is vital imo as we need to take care of Spoony and he is best suited to do so. I think we should just match up with them playing the system we have played predominantly all season. Defend set pieces much better and most importantly take our chances. Also not panic and change shape if we go behind. Trust what the plan is and stick with it.

In Jack we trust, unlike the LC semi if we take our chances we win imo. That is if your pal and the rest of the defence do their bit :aok:

I'm going for the pies, apart from the macaroni one if I don't want to throw up. (long story)

The win over Aberdeen gives me more confidence. That was a massive game, especially so soon after the semi. Both of which had monumental pressure on us imo

Boyle plays well and we'll win. Said it for weeks, he's due a stormer at the national stadium. Appreciate it's not just that simple, we need to deal with their aerial threat better this time and cut out the mistakes.

It's got an air of 2016 about it. Heartache at the national stadium months before, redemption in May

Got to defend their crosses better than we did in the League Cup semi as well. Particularly Rooney.

However I really believe that if our big players turn up we will win.

That's possible because they won't be available until Friday so easy to stick the faces on last minute.

Only 5 days to go...

My take on this upcoming final is that I think it is very important for us to score first. Defensively, St Johnstone are pretty strong, and if we get the first goal, then I would be fully confident of a win. However, if they take the lead, it'll be a lot tougher.

He's been coming on as a sub in most games Billy but I did notice he wasn't in the squad for the last three games.

Hasn't done much of note to be honest and it wouldn't surprise me if the loan was cancelled. I watched the Finn Harps games and he struggled, pity his spell at Kelty Hearts was cut short.

I assume Premier Sports wanted it on earlier – according to their schedule they have Real Madrid v Villareal from 5:15, so if a 3 pm kick-off went to penalties it would run into that.

Depends where you're watching the game I guess, but I think if you start the radio stream on the BBC live text page and pause it, then as long as you keep the page open you can return to it later. Even if the coverage ends. Fairly sure that happened have gone to a midweek derby and returned to it much later.

Regarding 2016 ping an email to the BBC sports department they may be able to send you a copy of the programme or provide a link. Might get lucky

They usually have their programmes on their site that you can playback for a week.
