Just read that astronaut Michael Collins has died. Command module pilot on Apollo 11, the first moon landing and also flew in the Gemini programme. In some respects he was the forgotten crewman of the first landing, given he didn't walk on the moon, but his role was vital. Reread his autobiography recently, one of the best space-related books I've read and a great record of a life well lived.

I read some of his stuff following a trip to NASA in Florida.
Very interesting guy.

The unsung hero of Apollo 11.
The unglamorous job of orbiting the moon while Armstrong and Aldrin became famous.
The mission could not be completed with two people.
RIP, a pioneer.

Radio 4 called him the Man who took the bus to the moon but never got off.

Am I the only person who saw the thread title and wondered why somebody was posting about Michelle Collins?
Did Cindy Beale actually go to the moon?
:dunno:

It must have felt like a suicide mission to them. I’ve watched a few of the documentaries and even the people planning the mission felt it was 50/50 whether they’d survive. RIP.
