Aberdeen in transition with a punt of a manager and Hearts are, well Hearts. Huge opportunity to solidify ourselves as the "best of the rest" as Ron called it for the foreseeable future and push on from there. Could be a very important period in our history if we get it right.

Will be an interesting summer with the possibility of batting off bids for Porteous, Nisbet, Doig and Boyle. Also looking to ensure we have a new number 1 in place. There will be decisions to be made on the likes of Murray, Hammer and Mallan.

If we get the European spot we want then we really need to invest as much as possible this summer.

Like you said, Aberdeen look to have ran their course as the clear third force and hearts are a basket case.

A bit of investment and 2 or 3 seasons on the bounce of group European football could see us pull further ahead than Aberdeen ever managed to imo.

Especially when they will have to invest in their stadium at some point. Pittodrie in its current form is falling to bits. They’re probably slightly fortunate that the majority of their squad is out of contract.

Exactly. The time is now. Secure 3rd and do all we can to lift that cup. It will be huge for the club and any players who do move on in the summer will leave having achieved something glorious.

The Aberdeen as third force is a bit of a myth for me. This year, by all accounts we will finish third. Last year Motherwell finished third. The year before that Kilmarnock finished third.

Even during the rangers banter years Motherwell finished second one of the years.

Were Aberdeen really genuinely ever the third force?

Yes they were. Their run of league placings from the 2013/14 season is impressive. It is the consistently high placing over time that justifies the tag - even allowing for the couple of fourth places. Killie and Motherwell having a good season each doesn't usurp that.

:agree:

That kind of ‘best of the rest’ consistency is very rare in Scottish football.

Having said that, they really have very little to show for it... a league cup, a couple of European adventures and a decent (but hardly stellar) squad.
