Received a text message saying my Royal Mail parcel had a £1.99 delivery charge and to click on a fake link to a very convincing fake Royal Mail site to pay the charge.
I think this one has only started recently. Be warned

Goes to show how easy it is especially with people ordering stuff online. I don't answer the phone now if it is a number I don't recognise.

Neither do I.

I figure that if it's someone who rings from a number I don't recognise but who genuinely wants to speak to me, they'll leave a voicemail or find other means of contacting me.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been getting a fair number of other types. Credit card texts with links to approve purchases I've not made and are not pending in my account. Texts with an obvious bogus Inland Revenue link. Voicemails warning me about N.I fraud I've supposedly committed and my assets are about to be frozen, asking me to press a digit to speak to someone. Phone calls form Sky advising I have broadband problems, I'm not even with Sky. Very irritating and obvious to me they are suspect, but sadly some people will fall for it.

Why do all Asian folk that call you have English names these days? Could almost make you suspicious. 🤔

Edward phoned me yesterday to tell me that there was suspicious activity on my Amazon account and a iPad had been purchased and he needed details to close the account, Eddie didn't even know if he was calling from the uk and hung up. :greengrin

Years later it's become apparent that those people do indeed exist.

Neither do I. Any time a number calls I dont recognise I type the number into google, more often than not it comes up on a site like who-called.co.uk and is a scam.

Our next door neighbour almost got caught out by a scam caller, she ended up chapping the door to ask the wife to help her on the call as she was getting confused but ultimately the guy on the phone was trying to access her bank details, luckily the wife picked up pretty quick it was a scam and hung up but if we hadn't been in the the old dear next door was getting stung, terrible that these things can happen

I got a call on my mobile a while back from a scammer who was trying to get details of my phone account. I'm guessing you can use your phone account to make payments. Anyway, I asked them to call me back in half an hour because I was on my way to the office and couldn't talk. Sure enough, half an hour later my phone rang and I answered with "Police Berlin Tempelhof Fraud Squad, Detective Inspector ******** speaking, how can I help you?" Funnily enough the line went dead.

Asking where they got your number from as you are in a witness protection programme is good for a laugh, especially if they stay on long enough for you to tell them your protection officer automatically traces callers numbers and will be in touch.

You’d be surprised about scams. I was working in a bank when a customer called uo saying he’d be in the phone to Argos as they were refunding him and item and he just needed to give them his bank details. He was shocked as he’d never shopped at Argos before but he still gave them his details! Whenever I refreshed his account he was quite literally losing thousands at a time!

If you get a text message and you can see the number it comes from, I’m hoping no one does that thing I saw in social media. The potential victim of the scammer used the scammers phone number in a Gumtree advert, I think they were offering a free pug. Anyway, the scammer messaged the potential victim and pleaded with them to stop whatever they were doing as they were wee getting hundreds of messages.

Doing that would be cruel 😂

I'm running out of abusive remarks in response to the fake calls. It's just a bore now and I wish BT or someone would sort it out - that's BT who keep ringing up to tell me my account is seriously in arrears by the way.
My own theory - probably nonsense - is that a cell of fraudsters is operating within a massive legitimate call centre in Bombay or whatever. It could make a good thriller novel.

I've mentioned it on the PM board before but there are some great videos on YouTube of people who know tech security who go out their way to get the scammers, they end up gaining access to their computers and servers and deleting all the info or changing their own made up fake bank accounts to look like they scammed the scammers

I ordered some stuff online tonight and had the usual text message from my bank to go to my banking app to confirm the purchase. About half an hour later I got a text supposedly from the bank asking me to confirm by pressing yes/no. Ignored that. Then got an automated call asking me to press any button if I had made a transaction with the company in question. I ignored both as I had already gone through the security clearance on the app. Anyone else had this?

The sure way to tell was if it was on the same ‘thread’ in your messages that you usually get from your bank then it was genuine. I sometimes don’t get a message from my bank for weeks, but when I do, is added on to previous ones in the history.

If it was some random number that you have not had a message from before, then scam.

I suspect both of yours sound genuine. If the message asked if you had made a transaction with XYZ company, and that is the same one you had made a payment to earlier, I doubt a scammer could have found that out so quickly. If they had found this out, I would seriously worry for your personal data out there in cyberspace.

Yeah, definitely not from the usual bank text service. I got one asking me to confirm the payment by logging into the app, then this one popped up about half an hour later from a different source. I will contact the bank tomorrow, but dodgy but I never click any links like that

If you’re with RBS then the number will come from a randomly generated number within a certain set of numbers. I don’t know about other banks, but the text you have sounds genuine. The system that you approve the transaction from is different to the card system, so you can approve it on one and still get your card blocked.

I work in fraud and we usually recommend calling the number on the back of the card to be sure.

I've recently completed security awareness training and texts like this along with some relevant social engineering info scream of scam ....... I hope this isn't going to be a "thing" with the banks, it's either going to make more online transactions a pain or make it easier for folks to get scammed as some of these new genuine texts we always ignored in the past will be dodgy :-(

Ps admittedly the info was used quite quickly but the seller may have compromised systems

It is most likely genuine as I had a similar experience a couple of months ago.

Whilst making a purchase online of several £100's the payment was not authorised. Within a second or two I received a text from RBS on my usual text line which stated that, as a precaution, they had stopped a transaction and temporarily put a block on my card. It also stated that I would receive a further text from a secure number (which they displayed) and that I should follow the instructions carefully. They also referred me to their website to search "Fraud" for further info.

The 2nd text arrived almost immediately from the number they had stated and showed the purchase transaction had attempted to go through twice, a second apart! The text asked me if I recognised the transactions and to answer Y or N accordingly. It also stated that this would not make the transactions go through.

Finally after replying Y I received a further text on the normal line thanking me for confirming and advising that the card was now unblocked. It also advised that the transactions had not gone through and I should contact the retailer if I wished to proceed.

I used a different site to make my purchase and had no problems. It also had a 10% promotion on the same item so saved myself £60! :aok:

Something similar happened at the end of Dec. I made a purchase then got a text from the Halifax detailing the transaction advising the payment was declined. I was asked to reply yes or no if it was me who had made the transaction. I replied yes. Then got a text saying thanks for confirming, if you still need to make this payment wait 10 mins and try again, there is no need to call us. I didn't make a further purchase, as the no need to call us bit had raised alarm bells. It was a random number I received the text from, but as I don't do any banking or purchasing from my phone and it wasn't a link I clicked I wasn't overly concerned. The payment was successful because I did receive the order. There's been no unusual activity on my account since then. Should I still be concerned?

The bank texting and phoning reminded me of a time I was at Hampden watching a rather exciting cup final.

I have a very open financial arrangement with my wife and she was using my card to book a holiday for us.

The texts came through and in the excitement I mucked up. My wife didn't realise what was going on and phoned the bank when the payment was refused and wouldn't speak to her, I didn't know what was going on and the bank phoned me as they had my number and just as it all got sorted Hibs scored and the rest is hibstory!

I don’t know about the text telling you the payment was declined, but the system does let some payments go through then block the card after and contact the customer, also, the retailer may have tried the transaction again if it failed the first time. If your card has been ok since, then there’s nothing to be worried about I’d say.

You can’t always trust this. Scammers can “spoof” numbers to make calls and text messages appear to come from legit numbers.

Your device is the one that groups the messages into conversations so a sms that is spoofed to appear as being from the same source as a genuine sms can appear in the conversation thread alongside genuine messages you’ve had from the bank.

Some Samsung devices also have a form of number recognition software that means a phone call where the number is being spoofed to appear as your banks general customer service number will show as the name of the bank on your phone when it’s ringing.
