I don’t see a film thread on the front page. Seeing as I’ve been watching more this last wee while, thought I’d start a thread for sharing recent watches, whether the films are new releases, old classics and everything in between.

I’ll kick off with ‘A star is born’ which I watched on Amazon prime a few nights ago.

I thought it was alright but maybe not as into it as much as I thought I would be. Strangely as it began I started to question whether I was going to like it, but as it turned out I thought the first half was the best. Thought Cooper’s decline and their relationship could have been more gripping (and didn’t seem that gradual for quite a long film) and wouldn’t say I was that moved by the end of it. But not bad, and Lady Gaga is a talented woman.

Violent action movie with a science fiction twist from Luc Besson.
It’s amazing and Scarlett Johanson is outstanding.

Seen that a couple of times as I used to know someone that’s in it. Agree it’s a decent wee watch and something quite different.

I watched ‘Joe’ last night with everyone’s favourite Nicholas Cage 😝

It was good. He owns a tree-poisoning company and takes-on a young travelling lad struggling to mind his mum and sister living with an alcoholic and abusive dad. Cage is a bit badass himself but clearly a better role model than the lad’s father.

Watched The Third Man.... yet again... last night.

Magnificent writing from probably my favourite English author. The black and white gives it the perfect desperate feel.

And Orson Welles 😍

Funny enough I noticed that was on tv tonight on one of the sky channels but didn’t bother with it. Maybe I should have hit the record button after all!

👍 I like an old classic. Put the majority of the modern carry-ons obsessed with action and special effects to shame.

If we are going with old classics then I give you White Heat.

Watched Mank this week on Netflix.

This is David Fincher’s career passion project- the story of Herman Mankiewiecz writing Citizen Kane. The film jumps between him writing it from his sick bed and the prior ten years covering his relationship with William Randolph Hearst.

I would say that it requires a bit of knowledge upfront about the story, Orson Welles and Hearst. There is also still some dispute about what the “true story” is. But you could say that about most historic films.

Anyway I thought it was brilliant. 4 stars from me! Gary Oldman, Charles Dance and few others giving brilliant performances. Made me want to watch Citizen Kane again soon.

I hadn’t heard of the story before watching it, without trying to give any of the film away at the end credits when the book was being flicked through it didn’t look to ‘readable’ I take it that’s the wrong impression?

The heavily redacted pages were re-written for a later version. I’ve got it on my Kindle and the previously censored passages are shaded so you can see what the authorities didn’t want us to see initially.

If we're reviewing old pictures which stand the test of time then my vote has to go for....

The Searchers.

Its John Wayne's finest performance IMO.

A true classic. One of many brilliant Wayne films.

You could almost just admire the scenery for the duration of what is quite a long film :greengrin Stunning.

The last Duke movie I seen was 'Red River' for the first time a few weeks back... and I'm going to watch 'the man who shot liberty valance' shortly. Given my love for westerns, and the fact I really like both Wayne and Stewart... I think it's about time I did.

How the hell did that man get to star in so many films?

The Quiet Place 2, watched this last night was expecting it to ruin the first film as I really liked that but I thought the second was also really good, enjoyed it couple o big jumps a lot of tension.

Also watched a film called Wrath of Man with Jason Statham think it’s a Guy Ritchie film typical action man stuff but again pretty decent without troubling any award ceremonies.

I feel exactly the same, having watched it last week.

If this wasn't a film by a well known director, with some reasonably famous people in it, no film studio would have touched that pile of crap with a barge pole.

It was three totally random, totally nonsense, 'stories' artificially squeezed together into a narrative of a closing down newspaper.

In the words of my wife (who is actually into art-house movies) when leaving the cinema... "WTF was that meant to be?"

I went to a surprise movie at the Cameo last week. It ended up being "C'Mon, C'Mon" starring Joaquin Phoenix as a documentary maker who has to look after his young nephew unexpectedly.

I'm usually a sucker for this type of indie stuff..... lovely black and white cinematography, not much happens, liberal modern families with kids who talk like 30 year olds. Anyway this was pretty dire stuff. Nowhere near as profound or moving as it seemed to think it was.

Avoid.

Seen both modern IT movies and the Oasis ‘knebworth’ film fairly recently and I wouldn’t write home about any of them.

Second IT was pretty long and drawn-out, Knebworth was essentially just a film of the gig offering little else and not a patch on supersonic, which I think it wanted to be.

Managed to catch most of it whilst tidying up the Christmas Day massacre that was my kitchen.
Great movie but Donald O'Connors talent comes dangerously close to overshadowing Gene Kellys.
A much underrated state performer of his time that was relegated to support roles with the exception of his "Francis" series of movies.
That aside, pretty amazing when you think Gene & Donald's dance skits were generally filmed in one take with one camera, before resetting the stage then going again from a different angle. I can't think of many performers nowadays that could better, or even match their entertainment abilities.

DOC was an incredible talent. Without him, SITR wouldn't have been the same; that walk up the wall is one of my all-time favourite movie moments.

I largely hate the cinema and don't have the attention span to sit down and watch movies on TV when there are so many other more engaging things to grab my time, but my partner has been trying to subject me to "classic" movies that I've missed when the local cinema shows them.

In the past three weeks, been to see The Matrix (good special effects, a bit simple otherwise but could happily switch off and watch it) and Die Hard (extremely mindless but very much enjoyed it).

I thought “Don’t Look Up” was pretty awful.

Massive fan of the director and it’s a great cast. But it’s message and the plot is so obvious and on the nose after the first 20 minutes. It’s a satire that just isn’t very funny.

Tonally, it’s all over the place. Ron Perlman as the astronaut seems to be acting in a different film from Timothee Chalomet for example - although the least said about his character the better. There’s 20 minutes the film could have done without.

I also thought Mark Rylance’s performance was cringe worthy.

As you can tell, I hated the film!

I thought “Don’t Look Up” was pretty awful.

Massive fan of the director and it’s a great cast. But it’s message and the plot is so obvious and on the nose after the first 20 minutes. It’s a satire that just isn’t very funny.

Watched the latest Bond movie on Boxing Day, really don’t get the hype and great reviews it gets, wasn’t overly impressed at all.

Spectre was on tv last night. Quite enjoyed it given I’ve not expressed much love for ‘new bonds’ and Daniel Craig as the main man (it might be almost entirely quantum of solace to blame for that!).

Still.. give me Roger Moore running about Thailand any day before this modern carry on.

Seen a trailer at the cinema for another Guy Ritchie movie, "Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre", and Hugh Grant is in it also and from the trailer I thought he was playing the exact same character (Fletcher), turns out it's not, completely different part so either Grant has became one dimensional in his character portrayal or Ritchie has got lazy with his casting.

Suspicion (1941)
Watched it for, I think, the first time recently (always a chance I'd seen it before on a wet afternoon when I was taking a sickie from school back in the day). Classic Hitchcock psychological meddlings, great performances from an unlikable Cary Grant and a wonderful Joan Fontaine, with a touch of humour from Nigel Bruce (Watson to Basil Rathbone's Holmes), steadily increasing tension and paranoia until a cop-out ending. Brilliant, until the last 5 minutes.

I quite enjoyed it. I found Cate Blanchett and Bradley Cooper really watchable in their roles. There might be something missing though. I figured the film had a little less impact because of previous exposure to things like American Horror Story Freak Show but perhaps it is more than that...

Interestingly it is a remake and the original made the Independent list of top 20 films noir. I'd like to see a few films on that list after reading a poster on here claim Suspicion as his top one.

I love 12 Angry Men but I’d be struggling to call it a film noir. It doesn’t have that necessary nihilism where there is no redeeming features about anybody. 12 angry men ends on an emotional high with morality all over the place.

I do agree it’s an absolute classic. Actually we were putting some of our old dvds to charity shops yesterday and that one made the cut as a ‘must keep’.

Watched Black Adam last night. Not a brilliant film but it was good fun and it entertained me for two hours. I have never read any stories of these characters in the comic books so went into this cold. The plot was a bit obvious but it turned out to be better than I thought it would be.
Dwayne Johnson was brooding and solemn in the lead role and great at kicking ass as you would expect, his slight comic element encouraged by Amon Tomaz was a weak copy of the relationship between John Connor and the Arnold's T-800 in T2 Judgement Day but was entertaining none the less.
Adriana Tomaz was well played by Sarah Shahi but at times I was disappointed with her decision making especially when she was under pressure, there is so much more to her character than being a mother. I liked the Justice Society of America, if not just for the name but I grew to like the characters and Aldis Hodge was great as Hawkman. The awkward one way sexual tension between Atom Smasher and Cyclone was funny to watch and I thought Pierce Brosnan was excellent playing the old and tired Dr Fate.
The baddies, once established, were easy to hate and demonic and the post credit sequence made me giggle given the two characters in it and the possible/probably sequel that foretells. Was interesting to see the Amanda Waller character from Suicide Squad appear in this one and although just a cameo she was as usual excellently played by Viola Davis with all the sinister malevolence of her other appearances.
All round, an easy to watch action flick with a decent plot, if you go to watch it without expecting too much you'll enjoy it, the film doesn't take itself too seriously and there really isn't a bad performance from any of the actors in it. Better fair than your average Marvel film but the DC franchise has to produce more like this and less Suicide Squad and the studio's cut of Justice League if it wants to get close to its comic book rivals.

Suspenseful, surprising, Tarantino-esque, Cohen-esque, great acting, heist, theatrical, challenging, creepy, musical, twist-tastic, mysterious, edgy, noir, chaotic.

There's a moment in it which made me jump and shout out "woah" in surprise even though I was watching it on my own. I've seen loads of jump scares but this was so well done and unexpected, partly because it's not really that type of film. Actually, there's a second moment like that but not quite as effective.

Tarantino lite = an inferior product, bordering on homage to QT

Watched The French Connection, thought I had seen it before but don’t think I’d seen it all the way through. Really good.

Although, what was the point of the gunshot off screen at the very end? I know it’s a true story so the characters had pre-determined outcomes, which they advised in the end credits of what happened next. Does that not render the fade to black gun shot pointless? Either leave it in and don’t say what happened next for everyone, leaving it ambiguous. Or don’t have the gun shot as the what happened next text removes all ambiguity.

I see they’ve made a movie of Alastair Grey’s book Poor Things.

Emma Stone’s getting good reviews for her role but they seem to have removed the socialism, feminism and Scottishness from it to appeal to the American gammon market. Pity.

Watched it tonight. Had a look at Wikipedia to find out if they were making a sequel as the ending left you hanging.
Having read up on it apparently they didn’t want the stereotypical ending to a disaster movie whereby it all sorts itself out.
I actually enjoyed it and was left feeling I wanted more. They could defo do a sequel.

It was actually OK. Emma Stone was good. Mark Ruffallo over acted a bit. The themes had to be pointed out rather obviously in the script for the dumb-ass American audience and it lost something by being moved from Glasgow to London. The steam-punkish stuff works quite well with Alasdair Gray’s narrative and approach.

Overall 3/5.

I haven't read the book, but I though the film was great fun. I read an interview with Alastair Gray's son who said he'd seen it 7 times so far. Apparently the director loved the book, and asked to meet Gray to talk about adapting it a while back. He went to meet him in Glasgow, and Gray gave him his blessing to do whatever he wanted with it. The director is Greek, and he said that he didn't feel confident he'd be able to address the Scottish political themes with the right amount of respect, so he moved it to more recognisable or generic locations, and left aside the specifically Scottish political metaphors.

I thought the socialism and feminism themes you mentioned in your previous post (before you saw it, so maybe you'd have a different impression now), did come through - to the extent that I thought that they were a bit too explicitly asserted. I'd give it a 4, and I'm looking forward to reading the book.

Edit: I see you did recognise the themes were included and were a bit hammy... :greengrin

Finally got round to watching Saltburn and tbh I can't really see what all the fuss is about.

It was a bit pedestrian for about 90 minutes then they rushed about 8 years into the last 30. It felt a bit black comedy by numbers to me and the twist was obvious from about an hour in.

On the positive the acting was good, particularly the Catton parents although you would expect that given who was cast.

I watched the Beekeeper over the weekend. Very Jason Statham, very OTT, very actioned packed, very violent and very good at what it is. Interesting and talented cast around Statham. Not one for Oscar night but a bloody good and entertaining film that is worth a watch. Some really unintentionally funny lines in it too. Near the start when he meets his landladies daughter, who just happens to be FBI, she goes, " I think I notice a hint of British Isles in your accent". Statham as far as I could tell up to that point was speaking in his usual East London accent goes, "Yeah I was born there". Anyways well worth 2 hours of your time, out on Prime at the moment.

My favourite Robin Williams role was the baddie in Insomnia, a very underrated cop movie with Al Pacino from about 15 years ago. One of Christopher Nolans first films, obviously now hes become the go to director in Hollywood so its a good opportunity to see his early work if you liked the Dark Knight stuff and of course Oppenheimer.

It's a gangster-psychological thing, all set in the one place in 1950's Chicago. Fabulous stage-style acting from everyone, with lots of plot twists.

And then there's The Third Man, which has just popped up on iPlayer. I adore that film almost as much as I love Graham Greene. Probably my favourite English writer ever.

Agree. After re-watching the first four, my takes are Raiders is class, just the benchmark. Temple is a lot poorer than I remember, the 'demonic' scenes when Indy is under the spell are ridiculously long and overblown, takes up way too much of the film. Opening sequence in China and the first half hour absolute genius though. Crusade almost up there with Raiders, the Nazi stuff is hilarious, let down a bit by the love interest, a bit squirmy, and Connery's chemistry with Ford makes the movie great. Crystal Skull, i actually think it was unfairly panned, definitely not up to the previous movies but i thought it was watchable. (my family members disagree!)

I find it hard to pick significant faults with any of them, although having re-watched them all over Christmas with my youngest I agree with you re the scenes in Temple of Doom.

I recall being cynical about Crystal Skull, worrying that Ford was too old for that sort of comeback but I enjoyed it. I was REALLY cynical about him coming back last year for Dial of Destiny (and, yet again, with the Nazis) but it's hard not to enjoy.
