It’s becoming so formulaic
Some incident happens (could be good or misfortune)
- racist abuse
- sexist abuse
- death threats and violence
It’s almost like a pattern.
Patterns that can be spotted by computers and flagged.
Yet the platforms repeatedly fail to deal with it - although it theres a copyright breach - a 30s clip with Ghostbusters at your kids Halloween party - they’re on it. Sickening.
The Twitter dude has been pulled up by Amnesty (in particular on threats towards women) and commented on his platforms admitted failure to make inroads - it sounds like a broken record.
Until they sort this these folks will literally have a platform to either spout their awful views or to attract attention - the formula allowing people to monetise based on sewing the seeds of division (to generate more traffic) is IMO the flaw that drags us down.
Best thing for the kids to lay off it.

It's "freedom of speech" to allow people to say horrific things on social media with no consequences, and "censorship" to do anything about it. This is what we're up against.
Copyright violations are taken down instantly because there's money behind it. They don't care otherwise.

Well interestingly enough there was an American on Radio Scotland a while back around the time of the election talking about Freedom of Speech and there are limits - which folks tend not to go into. Just trott out the freedom of speech (I admit I hadn’t heard of the caveats as much but things I guess like incitement to violence is a no-no).
Twitter even admits to needing to do more - they just have repeatedly failed to do so. Awful.

I would throw in how shocked I was reading on here when Birmingham made an offer for Kevin Nisbet. Absolute hatred coming across in a barrage of comments all because they had the audacity not to pay more than they wanted to for the player.
I'd mirror that with comments about Heckingbottom as well...no one was murdered when it didn't work out for the guy at Hibs.

One of programme called I am Ruth on Ch 4 tonight at 9pm with Kate Winslet and her real life daughter playing her on screen daughter. To do with the mental health problems youngsters encounter when social media takes over their lives, and the parents struggle to understand and help. Watched a clip and Winslet being interviewed at the weekend (she comes across as a brilliant person, unaffected by fame and money). Looks like it will be something many can relate to.

Think they’ve been called different things. The one Suranne Jones was in was called I Am Victoria.

I was sure Sheridan Smith was in one of the episodes during lockdown but, it must've been a similar programme, it was very good anyway (I don't normally like her much).

Advert for this stood out to me, forgot it was Thursday (I was out anyway) - I’ll maybe grab it on catch up.
Never knew it was her actual daughter in it with her - interesting!

No not yet, plan on watching them all though. Will let you know once I've watched. Really like Samantha Morton, noticed she's in one ep. No idea how I missed this series.

I've watched so many series with Sheridan Smith, I now confuse them all. Not sure if I watched this series as having looked at the episode list, I don't remember the different stories. Will get round to these (eventually) too. Thanks for recommending.

It was really good. You should watch Kate Winslet being interviewed on last week's Kuenssberg Sunday show, really impressive the way she speaks about social issues. She donated £17k to a Mum in Ayrshire who's child has Cerebral Palsy after reading a story on the BBC Scotland site about how the Mum was going to have to put the child into care as she couldn't afford her energy bills due to the child being reliant on oxygen. She has a good heart.

I think it's educating them, and others, on how to use it. Being able to communicate and navigate social media platforms, in their many varieties, is an important skill to have. However, as you say, there's so much hatred and dangerous stuff there be it posted by real people or bots, that it's unhealthy to go in blind.

Thought the same. Still have 2 more to watch in the series, so far have found the endings to most disappointing, maybe it's deliberate to leave viewers to reach their own conclusion? No idea really. Enjoyed the Samantha Morton ep - I Am Kirsty - the most so far. Another hard watch, just goes to show how one single change in circumstances can spiral previous every day normal-ish family life out of control.
Sorry, this started of as highlighting a social media programme, now prob should be on best tv thread in the Dugout. :greengrin
