Having been cited for jury service I just wondered if anyone has experienced this during the pandemic? You no longer go to the relevant court but a cinema. A novel experience and it'll be interesting to see how it's all handled if actually selected for the jury.

I was cited but not picked.

Benefit is that it's all over the phone until you get picked so no more turning up to sit about just to get sent home 3 hours later.

I got cited at the beginning of covid but was discharged when I phoned up.

Done jury duty years ago and actually quite enjoyed the experience.

I was cited for last month, you have to do it in a cinema via a live feed. I think the case didn’t make it to court because the message was that all jurors were excused.

I got a citation a little over a year ago to attend last April but eventually got told it was off when trials were suspended.

I was quite pleased as my only other experience of jury service a few years ago wasn't great.

Yes, I've had the sitting around for hours experience a few times.

My sister served on a jury at a trial which was of such gravity that the jurors had to be put up in a hotel. I guess hotels are kept open at present for such things (as well as folk arriving from abroad).

I was cited last April, I was excused as I had a holiday booked for that week but the case would have been cancelled anyway due to Covid. I was cited again in August but wasnt picked. My wife was cited in January and was meant to go to the Odean at Lothian Road but wasnt picked to go either.

My wife was called to jury service but the court case was cancelled.

She was devastated, as she's been looking forward to 'officially' judging people for years, instead of in her standard unofficial (but very effective) manner.

Me too, last month at the cinema, but was excused.

Heard of a number of folk getting called up recently. Work colleague had to go along for 2 days but on the 2nd day they were told to go home as the case wasn't actually going to trial. Actually, knowing him it was probably cancelled the first day and he just fancied another day off!

Was also cited last month to attend the Odeon at Fort Kinnaird. I was to call each night after 5 to see if I was needed the next day. Had to do it all week then told on the Thursday I was no longer needed. Was a right pain in the arse as I'm self employed and had to fit jobs in at the last minute that I'd previously cancel.

That sounds like something that should stay in place after the pandemic!

I'm cited soon. Had a look at the rolls and there's a few well known ones coming up.

No doubt I'll not get picked as I've always wanted to do jury duty.

When you say you’re cited soon, have you had a letter telling you this? Or is there somewhere you can check? I’m studying criminology and law because I’m so interested in crime, getting picked for a jury would be great for me depending on the case.

I had to do this last week. I was called by the Clerk of the court on Thursday to say I had been selected as 4th reserve juror in the ballot and to report to the Odeon at Fort Kinnaird the next morning.

All set up very efficiently. Security check for bags on the way in then shown to the relevant screen where the jury minder takes over and shows you to your spcific seat. The main jury were sat up in the tiered seating all socially distanced with wee desks and microphones set up. Us reserves were sat down the front. The main jury had cameras trained on them and they are shown on a big screen in the actual court room like a zoom meeting. I thinks that's how deliberations are done at the moment too - zoom style on the cinema screen.

The cinema screen itself was set up in four quarters - one showing a wide view of the court, one the defendent, one the witness and another for any specific evidence etc. The sound link was very good too.

They went through the charges and then asked the jury if there was any reason why they couldn't sit on the case. In mine, three jurors excused themselves at that point and I only just escaped having to sit through what was estimated to be an 8 day case! I was still there for a couple of hours though as they went through the process.

Sorry didn't word that correctly. I've already been cited. The date is soon.

Ah right. Just wondered, I’ve been called up twice but never made it past the draw of numbers it’s been ages since I was last called up.

Sadly not. It was made clear on the court website that lunch would comprise of a sandwich and a drink. Outrageous IMO, you’re sitting in a cinema and there’s not even a pick and mix option, there’s not even any trailers.
