About time. Maybe soon we'll start seeing fares proportionate to the service, instead of the current scalping.

Quite right, too. Rail privatisation was one of the worst of the lot, IMHO. A rail transport system is a public service. You can't have a fully operational national rail system in which for profit operators run it as a marketplace. In a true market system private operators would close unprofitable lines , which would leave large areas of the country - anywhere beyond the big cities - without rail. This is unthinkable in a modern society, particularly when government wants to encourage people out of cars and into public transport. The result is that the state has to massively subsidise the private rail companies; yet another example of privatise the profits and nationalise the losses. Overall rail privatisation has been a costly disaster; PUBLIC transport should be publicly owned. Anyone who has travelled on the publicly owned railways in many European countries can see the difference in quality and reliability. Difference is those countries invest properly in their public transport and ensure it is modern and efficient.

A privately owned monopoly is rarely a good idea.

Last sentence is very important. The old British Rail was a terrible example of a nationalised railway and as a result very few used it.
