View Full Version : Crowds in football after Covid

I was thinking about this. I know it has now been over a year since anyonw attended games.

What impact will this have on crowds not only at Hibs but in football in general. It is easy to get out of the habit of going to games but difficult to get back into it again.

This is obviously a different situation with the virus so where do you feel crowds will be on return of the ground opening?

Think folk will be desperate to get in.

First one will be a sell out (of whatever the allowed capacity is).

If it's a long drawn out return, I dont see much change. If it's full capacity for all come next season start, I can see a mini boom happening. All depends on how successful this exit is.

I doubt any boom will last onto further seasons as Scottish football is already well supported per capita.

Only those AST holders who have attended an away game this season though.

Those who have a Hibs season ticket in the West Upper should be allowed back before any riff raff, although I would draw the line at being seated in the East. Is it true that they leave the crusts on their prawn sandwiches over there?

only walk-ups should be considered at first :greengrin

extra cash for the club

but seriously, i'll only be considering walking up once Covid cases are down to normal flu figures, which i doubt will be next season :(

The radges will be relishing “having” to wear face masks both inside and outside the stadium. Think that’ll prove fairly problematic for e.g the Derby.

Assuming the adult population has been vaccinated by summer as planned, i cant see any real reason to stop full crowds next season. If everyone has been vaccinated and crowds are not allowed back, what exactly do we have wait on? Cant wait to back.

Here’s another question, what impact will it have on the players having crowd back.

Josh Doig has been performing (for the most part) brilliantly but has never experienced a game at Easter Road with any crowd at all. Will having crowds back impact his game?

I think he’ll absolutely love it - sort of player who is going to get the crowd on their feet.

Might effect players on debut, who haven’t experienced the game or the crowd. He’s used to the game now though so the crowd won’t faze him.

It’ll be interesting to see how people feel about the thought of being among a large crowd again, it’s been a year now, a year of constant messaging about that being bad. It’s bound to have a lasting effect that we may not even realise yet.

I think personally I’ve no desire to be in a crowded space until I’ve had the vaccine, so will be into next season before I consider it.

I'd love to be going to a game this weekend.

I can't see us having capacity crowds until potentially the season after next. All the talk of a third wave - vaccine or not - will put that on the back burner. I can see maybe 60% capacity being allowed, with special provision made for those who cannot be vaccinated (a COVID secure section in the South Upper?) and perhaps season tickets only until further notice.

Home fans and season ticket holders only spread throughout the stadium would just about work financially at Easter Road.
Hibs along with Hearts, Aberdeen, Rangers and Celtic will struggle to accomodate all of their home fans

But the smaller clubs with their small supporter numbers would struggle financially without away fans.

Two different issues.

After a year of social distancing I’d imagine jumping straight back into a stadium sitting shoulder to shoulder with others could be a bit unsettling for a while until we get used to being in confined spaces with lots of others again. Have kind of quite enjoyed having a bit of space around me when out and about to be honest!

If I've had the vaccine by the time we're back, I'm not bothered how busy it is, to be honest.
I just want to be back. Would take that socially distanced or crammed in to capacity, either way I just want to go and watch Hibs again.

One jag means you still have a 40% chance of being infected so a bit of a gamble. There’s also talk of a booster jag in the autumn for those who have had two. It’s a bit of an unknown.

My wife has had her 2 jabs. I'm getting my first vacine this evening, i'd happily go back to the football and leave the kids at home with a couple of pizzas 😁

I think we can all agree, Hibs overseas fans who cannot get to the game should be the first to be allowed into games.

I’ve got seriously mixed feelings about it.

On one level I used to love going to football, I miss it and I’m wanting to get back.

On another, I don’t know how I’ll feel being in close proximity to other people, especially shouting and singing and without masks. From guiding a business safely through the pandemic and putting appropriate safety measures in place to knowing people who have died and been seriously ill with Covid - it’s quite a thought to put yourself into a situation that we’ve conditioned ourselves to consider unsafe over the past year.

Mixed feelings indeed. Hopefully progressive opening up over the summer will make it feel like less of a leap but I don’t mind admitting to feeling conflicted about it.

I’ll be back as soon as possible. Hopefully I’ll have my vaccine by the time we’re allowed in. Even if something goes drastically wrong with the vaccine rollout, COVID is going to be about non existent for us to get back in a stadium so I’d still be more than happy to go.

I don’t think we need to be overly concerned about full capacities initially. Current season ticket holders account for less than 60% of capacity. Without any guarantees, there is almost certainly going to be a drop to that number. Couple that with people who might be hesitant to attend initially, anything from half capacity upwards might see us ok.

I am looking forward to getting back, although very nervous in crowds. I think it will take some time until we all feel comfortable sitting amongst so many people. Having lost a friend of many years, as many others have, it brings it home how deadly the virus is. I will probably renew my season ticket but may not necessarily actually attend until the covid infection rate is extremely low.
I wonder if the club will continue with the matches being televised for ticket holders like me, as it is now?

Hibs won't be the ones who decide that, it will be a decision for the SPFL and TV broadcasters to decide.

I would doubt if it will continue as an option once grounds are back to full capacity again.

I think crowds will be well down across the board due to a combination of getting out of habit, and a lot of people being wary of being in crowded places again.

It depends on the situation at the time. If we can get to a state where everyone feels confident about mixing at close quarters the crowds will flock back.

People are desperate to get back to normality after this hideous dream that we've all been in for the last year.

My usual day, drive up saturday morning, Robbies for a pint or two, then in the ground by 2,30 yes early i know but its easier to get a pizza slice (just joking) i actually like watching the teams warming up. I usually stay over so a few bevvies in the evening, sorry swallies  back home Sunday, sometimes the footy is disappointing sometimes it gives us that high high high but Jezu Im missing it.

Depends what is meant by ‘after Covid’

Covid is going to be with us for years to come, so reasonable to suggest that there may well be some ongoing flexibility when it comes to numbers permitted to attend.

I watch the NRL they seem to be back to full crowds in Aus. Surely we can do it here too.

Personally speaking I am nervous about been in a crowd. 2nd jab to come so hopefully that will mean I'll be fine. Think I will try the RL with smaller crowds first then start attending the football in time.

I have it on good authority (the voices in my head) that Dr Mrs Budge doesn't want crowds back because the, ahem, 'big' team are currently experiencing attendances the same size as the Manchester derby.
