Hard to argue.

His fight with Hearns is probably the best thing on YouTube. Well worth 9 minutes of anyone’s time, the 1st round is jaw dropping. Marvelous.

In those days the fights were on free to air TV, I think ITV, so it was talked about in the playground the next day as much as the weekly football was. I watched that fight and quite a few others between Duran Leonard and Hagler. All absolute legends in their time.

I saw him for the first time on a midweek Sportsnight I'm sure it was and he absolutely destroyed Alan Minter. He was showered with bottles and coins for his efforts. Harry Carpenter was not amused.

He was definitely one of the greats, I still think he won that fight with Leonard. Probably had the best chin of any champion ever. RIP champ.

I've just watched that 1st round v Hearns as I couldn't remember it. Wow, it was incredible.

Watched it too, Dave, just unbelievable, you felt like both fighters must have been thinking, how the hell do I keep this up! Such fantastic fighters in that division in those days.

Boxing was great in those days. It's pathetic now. You may as well watch WWF.

It was certainly a hotly debated verdict with big differences of opinion between the experts. Without watching it again what i remember was Leonard winning the first 3 rounds and Hagler 5 of the other 9.

Probably, though as the commentators on that opening round said there wasn't much boxing going on then. It was fighting.

I’ve not watched it for a long time, but I remember Leonard throwing a lot of pretty ineffectual punches in bursts and Hagler landing the more telling blows.

That's pretty much how the fight went, Leonard backed off and frustrated him.
Hagler was chasing him around the ring for the biggest part of the fight, then Leonard would hit him with a few flurries at the end of each round and the judges bought it, there's no way the man deserved to lose his title that night.

Obviously don’t watch much boxing then.
