Passed away. The voice of several generations of motorsport and a top bloke to boot.

Gutted with that one.

In the nicest possible way...

There goes Murray Walker.

He's like Peter O'Sullevan or Bill McLaren in that he was instantly recognisable as the voice of his sport.

Brilliant at what he did and all the little gaffes made him even better imo.

There was little filter, you got every bit of enthusiasm, passion and unrivalled knowledge when he was on the microphone.

I thought he died years ago!

I genuinely thought he had too.

I know very little about F1 but he was one of these people who just transcended his own sport.

I thought he died years ago!

I make it the hat trick so far on the thread that thought the same!

I was watching some F1 clips from 96 - 99 and the commentary Vs today is like night and day, Murray was streets ahead of anyone on F1 now.

That’s really sad to hear. He was the voice of F1 when I was growing up and even now he’s still the most iconic F1 commentator ever. RIP.

Me too....can't believe this!! Although I'm certainly not an F1 fan it was far more enjoyable in his day, another sporting commentary icon.

I know this looks as if it's trying to turn this round to myself and that's not the intention but when I was younger I was obsessed with motor racing (F1 and BTCC in particular) but I never wanted to be Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher, Alain Menu, John Clelland or anyone like that, it was Murray Walker's job that I wanted to have. He knew so much about his subject matter and spoke with extreme passion, knowledge and elegance in regards to it, no filter, just the excitement he had for the sports. I wanted to be in that commentary booth when I was smaller. When he retired at Indionapolis it felt like the end of an era and I never truly enjoyed Formula 1 quite as much from that day onward.

I work for a distillery and do a lot of tastings, experiences and the like. Every single tasting I've ever done I've aspired to "Murray Walker standards" in terms of enthusiasm, passion, knowledge and research. I was doing an online one earlier and seen the news about twenty minutes before it started. Even though the subject matter is different, his style of presentation is a massive influence in how I do what I do.

Moments like "I've got a lump in my throat", "That's Mansell!" and even things like "What is Deletraz doing???" spoke with more honesty and integrity than any other commentator to grace the microphone in motorsport. Away to pour a dram in honour of the man.

The unmistakable voice of formula 1, I was never a huge fan of the sport but he made it more exciting than it was with his commentary. RIP.

I was a fairly big F1 fan through 80s/90s. It was more exciting back then and Murray Walker just made it more so. I don't tune into F1 much anymore as I find it quite boring and the commentators now can't hold a candle to Murray

F1 is a bit "niche" but Walker made it exciting and along with James Hunt even amusing.
