Well before my time playing wise but he was obviously an all time Scottish great.

I enjoyed him on the TV too (it's weird that Jimmy Greaves is being discussed on another thread this very day).

RIP the Saint.

RIP Saint

I remember you used to get a guid laugh on the ‘ Saint and Greavsie Show ‘ on a Saturday noon before setting off for the fitba

They never took themselves too seriously

Ian St John scored the fastest ever hat-trick at Easter Road for Motherwell three goals in as many minutes

A Liverpool Motherwell and Scotland great

Deepest sincerest condolences to family and friends

Another football great gone but not forgotten

RIP the genial Saint.

Used to love Saint and Greavsie back in the day - a football show that was a genuine one off and was worth getting out of bed for on a Saturday am. From what I can gather that was the tip of the iceberg in terms of the entertainment provided by that pair but they were way before my time as football players. If that had been all they'd done though they'd still be legends - RIP!

Quinn.Great wee centre forward and former team mate of our Pat Quinn.

Always remember the tv quote back in the 60's when a ä Scouser was asked on a current affairs show

"What would you do if Christ came to Liverpol"'?

'Move St John to inside right'" was the answer

A friend of mine used to drive the Portsmouth team coach in St John's time there. He had nothing but praise for St John and reckoned he was one of the nicest people he had ever met.

Saint and Greavsie was a much watch for me. He was a great presenter and that programme was a trailblazer for much of the sports TV we see now. RIP a great player and TV presenter

There was also the sign outside a Liverpool church saying "Jesus saves" to which had been added "but St John taps in the rebound".

:aok: showing my age now but can anyone remember Sam Leitch presenting football focus before Bob Wilson (might have been called football preview in those days)

He was the author of the (entirely correct) expression "They'll be dancing in the streets of Raith".

Christian grafitti on a wall:

What will you you do when Jesus returns to Earth?

Response came:

Move St John to inside right!

He and Greavesie introduced much needed humour to football coverage. Remember that it's supposed to be fun?

After them we were left with the likes of Keys and Grey and football coverage became about money and sleaze and hasn't looked back.

There was so little football on back then it was a must watch for everyone.

It was brilliant show. Absolutely gutted he’s gone.

Think it was in the early 70s the BBC ran a competition to discover a new sports commentator.A welsh lad won and went on to have a reasonable career. Anyone could enter and they were not identified. The last 4 appeared on TV(still without being revealed) and a winner was chosen .To everyone's surprise Ian St John was revealed as one of the finalists It was said that his accent was a bit too strong for commentary. As we know he went on to have a good broadcasting career.

As well as scoring, what I think is still the quickest ever hatrick in Scottish football history, Ian St. John did the voice over for the two Hibs share adverts in Autumn 1988.

Also remember Saint and Greavsie interviewing Gray and Duff on their programme at the time - just after the 3 v 1 Cetlc game that Archibald scored two in and Evans got the third - all by half-time.

:aok:

As a youngster I would play two games in the morning and Saturday's were clearly mapped out.........wake up, test card on the telly, only three channels, breakfast whilst watching The Flashing Blade, first game for Penicuik YMCA, second game for the Cubs, home for Saint and Greavsie, watch World of Sport with Dickie Davies all afternoon.......then dinner watching Daisy Duke and Dukes of Hazzard :greengrin

On a serious note, what a player St. John was and criminal how he didn't get more caps. It was however an era of tremendous Scottish talent in nearly all positions. Sad loss to football and entertainment, rest in peace Saint :not worth
