Just beaten Robin Haase in 3 sets in Rotterdam . I didn`t see first set which he lost 2 - 6 but in terms of movement and attitude he looked much better than the last time I saw him in Roland Garros . Played 5 matches in Challenger in Italy , 1 in Montpellier last week and now at least 2 this week in Rotterdam so getting competitive matches in which is what he needs . In terms of Grand Slams I can`t see him doing anything this year but if he can keep motivated in ATP 250s ( this week is 500 so a lot of ranking points at stake ) he should climb rankings soon who knows what could happen in 2022 . Him and Federer have been out for a long time and both are well into 30s but their past success has been down to talent but also attitude and ambition so think at least one of the 2 will challenge in some Grand Slams in 2021 or 2022 .

It's great to see Murray back competing again after what he's gone through over the last two years. He's clearly got a lot of natural ability which will see him through a lot of his matches but I'm not sure we'll see him back competing for Grand Slams again.

He'll be 34 in two months' time and whilst Nadal and Djokovic are winning slams neither of them have gone through what Murray has.

I'd also love to think Federer will be able to compete for a Grand Slam again but considering he will be 40 later this year I'd say that's unlikely.

Well done Andy. I still think that for the sake of his long-term health he should consider focusing on doubles. A swansong couple of years with Jamie would be hugely popular. However, that's obviously not what he's prepared to settle for.

Nadal has had years of knee problems and was at a low ebb for a long time. He looked close to being finished in fact (and there's been some well publicised controversy around quite how he managed to overcome those problems).

It's really just Djokovic who has benefited from an injury-free career but then he's more automaton than human. Federer, Nadal and Murray are wonderful tennis players to watch (aesthetically Federer is in a class of his own) but I never watch Djokovic. Mr anti-tennis whose mind-numbing, grinding tactics I saw described as 'the world's widest squash court wall'. I'm biased, but at his best I think Andy has the most natural ability/invention of them all.

Rublev won tournament . Not sure what is Murray`s next tournament . Not Marselles this week so maybe Miami 1000 . As for GBY`s idea of Andy concentrating on doubles it`s something I`ve wondered about too though I can`t think of any other player who`s done the same so late in his / her career and his brother is a doubles specialist who`d probably want to be 100% sure it was being taken seriously .(sure it would be given how competitive Andy is ) . There are a few English doubles specialists (Salisbury , Skipski brothers ..) who have been doing well so doubt Andy would get in GB team for Olympics or Davis Cup in singles or doubles unless his results improve dramatically in coming months .

Terrific stuff from Andy. I still feel he's bitten off more than he can chew by attempting to get back to the top after the sort of operation he had but I guess somebody as competitive as him simply doesn't have it in him to down tools. Personally I'd like to have seen him team up with Jamie on the doubles circuit but I can't knock what he's still managing to achieve in the singles with an artificial hip.

It's been delayed until at least 8:35 so I wasn't getting anything on the red button either except an error. If you have Virgin/Sky you can either go through channel 991 or 981 respectively which just has a holding graphic at the moment.

Andy should retire this year before he gets totally crocked. Love the guy.

Just finished watching it on record - managed to avoid any updates which I was impressed with!

Not much of a contest sadly, Karatsev far too good.

Murray will struggle to compete with anyone at that level now sadly but hopefully he can win a few matches at the Australian Open.

He reached the semis of the Australian Open last year but other than that has never really done much at the top level. Prior to that tournament he hadn't even ever been in the top 100.

At 28 he's unlikely to have too many more opportunities to win a big tournament. With the possible absence of Djokovic at the Australian Open this could be his chance.

Won all his major titles, including two Olympic golds while working with Lendl, who also helped him become world No 1.

No chance he's getting back to those sort of heights but I imagine he's looking for the right coach to get him consistently back to a competitive top 20/top 30 level.

Hope he goes onto win the title and have a good run at Wimbledon.

Surbiton's obviously quite a few levels below where he's used to playing but he'll have a decent test against Denis Kudla in the semis as he's reached the last 16 at Wimbledon a few years ago so is obviously quite good on grass.

For Murray just to be out there competing is quite impressive, I would love to see him go far at Wimbledon one last time.

I think he should gracefully retire.
He is never going to reach his previous levels and would have beaten Kudla easily a few years ago
He is now like an ageing champion boxer who is still in it for the pay days but gets embarrassed by inferior opponents
He gave it a go but no need to tarnish his reputation further.

I don't see it that he's tarnishing his reputation to be honest, I think he genuinely just enjoys playing tennis and whilst he would love to be at the level he was at 6 or 7 years ago but probably never will be again he is just happy doing something that he loves.

I would guess that he would have thought that he could compete at the very top level once he regained fitness from his injuries as he was world class.
I can’t see him wanting to continue much longer if he is no longer really competitive with the big boys, it’s his winners mentality.

His documentary on prime about his hip operation is great. He was in bits when he thought he had to retire.

I suppose its not like football where you're based in one training centre and stay at home. It's a way of life, traveling to a different country every fortnight with the same group of people. The normality of family life might be hard to go back to

Near miraculous he's playing at the level he is with a metal hip. Said it before, my preference would be to see him play doubles, which would put less strain on his body plus he'd still be a regular title contender.

I wasn't surprised at all with Murray's win yesterday v Tsitsipas as he is pretty hopeless on grass. Today v Kyrgios I expected a pretty tight match so for Murray to win in straight sets is quite impressive.

I expect Berrettini to have too much for him tomorrow in the final but it's great seeing Murray reaching finals again.

Of course a 250 event is a much more minor event than Murray is used to playing throughout his career but considering what he's been through just to be back playing is an achievement in itself, never mind being back in finals.

I think reuniting with Ivan Lendl has been a great move.

The previous rounds haven't been on any mainstream UK TV channel so I don't think this one will be either.

I think he'll go into somewhere around 40th in the world rankings after this tournament. If he does well at Queen's next week he must be in with a chance of being seeded at Wimbledon especially with Russian players being banned - there's four Russians currently ranked above Murray so he'll automatically move above them for Wimbledon.

Because King Kenny is Scottish, AM is obviously a very successful tennis player but he isn’t (imo) the natural talent that KD was. I’m more drawn to people who are just naturally ridiculously good at their sport than people who need to work really hard to get to the top ie Messi over Ronaldo, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Maradona, George Best etc.

I'd argue that Messi has worked extremely hard over the years. O'Sullivan too (on and off, probably worked harder on the mental side as that's his main weakness).

Talent alone doesn't cut it at the very top level of any sport these days.

Murray is incredibly talented, but also had to work stupidly hard to get anywhere near competing with Nadal, Djokovic and Federer. I'd put him as my top Scottish sportsman ever by a distance, but I guess those things are subjective.

Yep I hear what you’re saying, but messi hasn’t had to work AS hard as Ronaldo would have to keep up with him, if you get me. As you say, all subjective [emoji106]

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkThat can't be measured, but I wouldn't be surprised if Messi worked just as hard over the years on technique, fitness etc.

Riordan is a good example at our level for instance. I think most would say he was one of the first talents we've seen at the club in the last few decades, but it's also well known that he spent extra hours after training practising free kicks etc. I see that work ethic as part of his talent.

No chance, best tennis player ever but not sportsman

A kid from Dunblane who became the world's No 1 tennis player, along the way being the first British man to win a major in nearly 80 years? Extraordinary and puts him in the frame to be the greatest ever British sportsman, let alone Scottish.

That last game was ridiculous, how he got the last 2 serves from Medvedev even back in the court was unbelievable

Andy Murray wins his first title since 2019. Up to 42 in the world rankings. He'll never hit the heights of his golden years but he'll feel he's proved the hip op was worthwhile I reckon.

The important thing is Andy's win was on clay. That'll give him a tremendous boost.

No tennis updates since SDG gave up posting but watching Alcaraz dismantle Tsitsipas is worth a mention.

Tsitsipas is no mug but he can't get anywhere close in this game. Alcaraz will win this in straight sets - unless his form falls off an almighty cliff - and it will be Djokovic next in the semi final.

The two titles he won in the last fortnight were on the Challenger Tour. Brilliant that he won them but Queens will be a level up
He has had a great start to the grasscourt season. It should give him a bit of an advantage at Queens. Looking forward to seeing how far he can go
