I’m due to renew my licence in a few months time. Does DVLA send out a reminder and paperwork for this or is the onus on the individual to deal with it?

"The DVLA will send you a D46P application form 90 days before your 70th birthday. To renew, fill in the form and return it to the DVLA with your current driving licence photocard. You may also need to include a new passport-type photo – the form will tell you if you need to do this."

I had to renew as a brand new septuagenarian a wee while back. Leading up to it I wondered if I would need to get a medical certificate but all I did was complete the paperwork they send. A bit like not having to prove your eyesight unless something untoward happens.

Only difference in my driving since then is that I now call those around the 50 mark “young whippersnapppers” 🏎

IIRC with the old boy driving licence TD a shorter validity, so you have to renew more regularly.

The theory is there’s more reasons you can’t drive when you hit that age.

It catches a lot of people out. My Pops had a driving licence permit that he was issued with during the war when he was in the RAF. Had that until the day he died. Never had to renew it.

Thanks for replies. My question was unclear. I already have an over 70s licence. It’s the requirement to renew every three years I was referring to. I was wondering if reminders were sent out or otherwise.

Sorry Jim, I’m far too young to think about that!! At least for another 7 months 😡. Be helpful to hear how you get on.

I got the reminder a few days ago and have a couple of months to sort it out. According to the document you can do the work on-line and this is recommended as you'll get a quicker response.

Note also that the default licence once you reach 70 only allows you to drive a motorbike or car. If you want to drive anything bigger than a car, say a minibus for a club or voluntary organisation or a hire van, there are a few more hoops to go through involving a doctor or optician's certificate.

My Dad used to get a reminder to renew every three years.
