Will be the code name for his death. Queen is London Bridge I think. Queen Mother was Tay Bridge.

This is going to come over harsh......Other than his family, would anyone really care too much . He’s had a fantastic life to a grand old age ..........I’m sure there will be a BBC driven mourning period, but for me, I feel much more for those struggling through pandemic and post brexit life challenges ......

In the case of the Queen there is a cut off at night and if she dies after that time it won't be reported until 8am the following day. That was based on the BBC being the ones to break the news to the public, whether in the age of multiple media sources that has changed I don't know. There are all kinds of recommendations about what music should be played on the radio in the intervening time and the BBC has very specific playlists.

The hospital he is in doesn't currently allow visits except in exceptional circumstances but when did the 'elite' ever play by the same rules as the rest of us?

I highly doubt it with regards rumours.

However I doubt anyone would break cover and announce it as fact until it is formally announced by the firm. It would be a sure fire way to be blacklisted for years.

All the MOTD presenters in black as well now, Lineker wasn't wearing that when he done his pre show chat half an hour ago..... . I think we'll see an announcement tomorrow.

Fwiw I have little time for the Royals and Philip seemed a particularly unpleasant sort. I think he served actively in WWII though so I respect him for that.

Visiting someone in hospital is considered an essential reason for travel. I'm not sure about NHS premises but other settings allow visits in exceptional circumstances including when someone is close to death. A lady I work with was with her Dad when he passed away in a Marie Curie Hospice last week.

BBC presenters didn’t this morning.

I think it's probably been a case of people getting to work overnight with their sources and confirming nothing was imminent. I daresay yesterday after Charles visiting and leaving looking visibly upset that there was a 'just in case' decision taken by the BBC et al. I suppose the real clue that nothing was overly untowards was that he didn't stay in London but returned to Highgrove.

I think a lot of us are baffled by the reaction of the media to this kind of thing. As a committed republican I hold the Royals in little esteem, beyond my feeling for anyone on a human level who is losing their husband, father, grandfather etc I don't really care. However a lot of people do and the media give them what they want. It's referenced in the Guardian piece above that the BBC actively intended not to go overboard with the death of the Queen Mother but there was a massive backlash for something as simple as the news presenter not wearing a black tie. State weddings, funerals and other occasions still draw in huge numbers of viewers and no broadcaster or other press outlet is turning that down. Even those who actively rail against it (think Channel 4 and their alternative Christmas message) are playing on it and drawing viewership/readerhsip/website hits as a result.

I think the fact that he's 99 1/2 years old and in hospital would have meant it was an obvious possibility. But the online rumours going around last night were clearly not grounded in fact and whilst many folk will have shared them in good faith they may well have been started maliciously.

I'm no fan of royalty, but I give you a 2 word defence of them as heads of state:

You mean President Trump who's just been democratically voted out of office? Imagine if he'd been born into the British Royal Family and we'd been stuck with him for 70 years? As has already been pointed out above, Prince Andrew is the perfect example of what could happen. If he'd been born first we'd be sitting on top of a bit of a strange situation over the next few years with a suspected nonce about to take the throne.

People are only so supportive of the monarchy in this country because we've been extraordinarily lucky with the Queen. She's been such an ever present in the lives of everyone alive that people forget you don't always get someone that good. She's probably the best monarch this country has ever had. And I say that as a republican. I've got no fondness for the institution she represents and would prefer it to be disbanded tomorrow but I respect the job she has done. I think support will start to wane when Charles takes the throne although everyone seems to love William and Kate so I doubt we'll see a Republic in my lifetime.

He shouldn't have to in this instance. If you don't want to show respect fine, but you shouldn't criticise those that do.

Aye, someone has died. Just let it go.

And is there a need to criticise? I'm honestly indifferent to this death, but rightly or wrongly the royal family are part of our society. That Hibs tweet to acknowledge the death of an historic figure shouldn't take people by surprise. Once again in internet land everything is either good or bad and there are always people who waant to show that they're smarter than everyone else by criticising.

You've hit the nail on the head there IMO. :agree:

It’s a bit tone deaf though no? Since I’d suggest there’s only a small part of our support who would care if we said nothing.

It’s a case of whoever’s in charge being worried about getting stick for saying nothing yet actually this is a worse look all round now

Maybe it's sincere.

Maybe Ron, being American, holds the Royal family in greater esteem than the majority of Hibs fans. It could have been him that requested the message.

I'm no fan of the royalty but there is nothing wrong with the tweet from Hibs. The responses are childish and pathetic!

It's almost as if ignoring something you don't like is impossible now.

I saw the tweet, half wondered why Hibs felt the need to comment and scrolled on. Likewise I saw the breaking news on TV a short time ago, watched for 5 minutes because it's a pretty significant event then got on with my day.

I can't say I feel in any way inconvenienced. My plan for the day was to watch the racing at Aintree. That's still my plan, a few mentions of Philips involvement in racing and equestrian sports won't spoil it in any way.

My grandparents used to still use the phrase “Chinky” when ordering a takeaway. Was it a generational thing? I wouldn’t say they were racist people but it’s a difficult one.

I don't really get the persistent faux outrage that a man of his generation was racist. That's not a defense of his ideals and attitudes, but find me a person his age who doesn't have SOME questionable (by today's standards) opinions...

If that's the case, then Hibs should tell them where to stick their armbands.

I mean, jeezo, it's just some old rich geezer that married somebody famous.

I'm not sure if there may also be a minute's silence before each of this weekend's games, I'm thinking there probably will be.

If so then it's probably a good thing there won't be any fans there to save us from some people causing the club embarrassment.

Particularly with us being at Ibrox where they are bound to go to extremes in showing how British they are which is equally as pathetic and predictable.

The Hibs tweet guy has done magic.
Has caught hunners of awfy serious fish.

Amongst all the boring folk there are some good funnies:
One guy tweeted "your not supposed to annoy me til Sunday"
Another tweeted " sad to see him go hopefully he can come back back one day in a coaching role"
Another funny was a little crass "Hibs no wasting any time in trying to **** the Queen"

All better than the po faced tweets of the majority.

That's exactly what will happen, much to the chagrin of those desperate to be annoyed for a few weeks. A couple of days of coverage that is easily avoided if you truly want to avoid it then another day for the funeral, already confirmed as not being a state funeral.

The precedent was set when the Queen Mother died. 'Don't go overboard, she was an old lady and it had to happen some time.'

It stands to reason things will be a bit different when it is the Queen herself of course.

It didn't really happen that way though. There were 11,887 police staff and a further 1,306 civil staff employed in the time between her death and the funeral. Yes, I know it was a state funeral. The only reason they'll not be having one this time is due to restrictions and it would be difficult for them to get away with it - nothing to do with his age. There were also an estimated 200,000 mourners in the streets for the Queen Mother.

I get that but I was specifically refering to the the media coverage and that will die down pretty quickly, as it did then. The quote I used was from the BBC and was said directly to the presenter before he announced the news.

Anything involving royals always attracts people onto the streets, be it celebration or mourning.
