What great servants these 2 have been to the club. Paul looks far more comfortable with Darren alongside him.

No great test for them today but no coincidence we're starting to get clean sheets since Darren came into the side.

Big Daz oozes the confidence that an experienced pro brings,he's a good no nonsense defender with no lack of skill too(Porto take note( where as Hanlon is a wee bit more silky with Daz beside him.A very good pairing.

He's be phenomenal since coming back into the team.

Still can't get my head around how much he's done for Hibs, after being disposed of like a piece of garbage by the Huns :not worth

I think what has taken me by surprise about Daz is the amount of consecutive games he's played, playing weekends and midweek for instance I thought he might have a problem with but his fitness seems to be holding up admirably. He's been immense since he came back.

Great defensive performance today albeit not up against much threat after the sending off.
Daz and Hanlon can’t go on forever and I think the next centre half signing needs to be marquee- whether he plays with Porto or not.
Gallagher of M’well for me

Could that be because Paul doesn't have to look out for his younger team mate, instead Daz just gets on doing what he does and this allows Paul to concentrate on his own game.

I thought they both struggled at times today especially with high balls pumped forward.

Darren has been terrific has to be said, and I agree with your observation too. The other thing to note is that Ryan likes to play out of defence at times and get forward which can leave Paul Hanlon exposed a little, or marking two when play breaks down and Ryan is out of position up field. Darren tends to hold his position, stay central, and concentrates on doing the basics of defending (well). Not criticising Paul here, but Ryan would learn more looking at Darren's game - master the basics first, then add in the footballing side.

Both DM and PH have played really well and been solid of late :aok:

Are they actually doing better than Hanlon and Porteous did at the start? I actually just think that we're back to usual after a dip, not that one player had fixed something. It wasn't really broken.

He’s been fantastic and just what we needed as Porteous was struggling.

We've only conceded four more goals all season than Celtic, and considering that sticky spell when the players were knackered and we conceded five in a week that's outstanding reading.

We are so much more solid with Porteous out of the team and Darren McGregor in. We have good enough footballers in midfield and attack that we do not currently need a ball-playing CB but just someone who is defensively solid and takes no chances. Him and Hanlon great together.

Worth pointing out that we're playing three at the back now, not a pairing of McGregor and Hanlon.

McGregor does the central role of staying steady and clearing it very well, which enables Hanlon and McGinn to concentrate on runners and get involved when we have the ball.

Again, another great observation :aok: helped by Cadden and Doig being full of energy and running, and both as good these last few games going forward as they are defensively. Cadden has some engine on him - terrific signing :agree: Doig just looks like a natural and he's destined for big things, no doubt about it.

Valid point. I also think that, at this stage of his career, that position in the middle of the three suits McGregor perfectly. Less likely to get pulled about and doesn’t need to do much in the way of running.

And significantly worse. Motherwell have been dreadful at the back this year. 46 goals lost.

It it never fails to surprise me that Hibs net posters continue to agitate to replace defenders with the third best record in the league with defenders with the third worst record in the league in the expectation that this will be an improvement.

I don’t know the answer to this but I’m sure someone will but what was Liverpool’s defensive record like compared to Southampton’s when they signed van Dijk? Could it be that one defender could significantly improve another team?

It's all relative.

Gallagher has also been the central centre half of the Scotland team that's qualified for the first major tournament in over 20 years.

Easy to raise your game now and then. I see it more of a fluke, defending our own box against Serbia, very little thinking to be done other than head and kick everything. Playing alongside some of the best players in the premier league in Tierney Robertson McTominay and being protected by McGinn. He’s shown week in week out that he’s no better than an average centre half, and he’s at an age where we aren’t going to be building our defence around, let alone shell out a decent wad of cash on him.

Likelihood is that Porto will move on, and we are going to have to start forward planning for the future beyond McGregor and Hanlon (although the latter still has a few years left), I’d much prefer that to be someone in their mid twenties who fits into our transfer policy.

You're right. Scotland qualified for their first ever major finals for more than 2 decades by him playing centre half and it was a "fluke". It was only 1 game he played wasn't it? You can't "fluke" your through multiple international standard games so it must have just been the one game.

Honestly laughable how blinkered how some of our fans are.

"Easy to raise your game now and then". Aye, it's easy at international standard football to raise your game during Euro play off games away to teams like Serbia.

It's easy to do as long as your full backs and centre midfielders are good. You don't need any ability at all, a left back will mean you can just fluke your way multiple international matches at center half.

Absolutely clueless some folk about football.

Absolutely no need in that last bit, calling someone clueless due to a difference of opinion.

Gallagher was immense for Scotland in the two qualifying games but I hadn't been convinced by him for Scotland before then, thought he was poor in his first couple of internationals. He was also no doubt helped a lot by the quality of players around him and the fact that his role was basically just to win headers against mitrovic.

I've seen plenty of evidence this season to support the idea that his game against Serbia was a well above average performance for him. He's been the direct cause of several goals Motherwell have conceded this year. He also cost them their Europa tie with two stupid errors in the space of 5 minutes when it was looking like they could put out a strong Israeli side.

Pre Daz being back in the side I’d be watching any cross balls into the Hibs boss from behind the couch, scared the life out of me. I would say that all the blame can’t be put at central defence, Rocky should be dominating his area more I feel. He seems very hesitant for coming for any balls into the box that aren’t landing basically landing on his head.

Love it. He was crap for Scotland pre the two play off games, and even then one was against Israel, hardly a top international side.

It’s also common for players to raise their game for ‘big games’, he had one job against Serbia and it was to defend our box. He was outstanding, I agree, but he’s been absolutely toilet for Motherwell outwith that. Mitrovic is a very good brute of a striker, but he’s not got any pace or skill to run past anyone, which is a centre backs dream, they hate pace and skill.

How many times have Hibs sides been outstanding against the old firm only to drop points at home to ***** the week after, it happens all the time in football.

I’m guessing you are related to Declan due to how angry you are though, so I’ll apologise for that.

Daz is your no nonsense CH, puts his body on the line and does the basics well. Porteous wants to be the ball playing type of CH but he hasn't yet learned to do the basics to a high standard, as I said earlier Hanlon I think feels more relaxed knowing Daz is beside him and he can concentrate on his own job instead of trying to coach Porteous through games.
