I've just missed picking up a call from a number starting 0766. I was going to call it back thinking it was a mobile number, but decided to check on a reverse tracing website first, and wound up at this page - Got a missed call from an 076 number? Don't call back - it's a premium rate scam | Technology | The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/blog/2010/mar/02/076-number-scam-callback) .
The bottom line here is don't return a call from an 0766 number as it will cost you money.

I've honestly no idea why the phone companies don't simply notify people prior to calling that it's a premium rate line.
Surely with the advances in technology it can't be that hard.

Hibbyradge's deleted post pointed out that the article I linked is from 2010. I didn't realise that, but nevertheless I won't be returning the call - if they want to speak to me they can call back.
I've had quite a few calls recently from numbers that turned out to be bogus. It's always worth checking on a "who called me" type website before returning calls from numbers you don't recognise.

I've had a few missed calls just over the past couple of days - it's with a local dialling code, but it's a long time since one of my mates phoned my mobile from their landline!! Nothing coming up on search, so just ignored them.
Answered today, when they phoned again, out of curiosity without saying anything... the guy asked if it was me (knowing my first name) in an English accent.. sounded like he was in an office/call centre.
I hung up without comment.

That's my goto for these sort of calls.

They should invent an app which just sends a horrendous high pitched sound down the phone

I dont answer calls from any number I don't know. Makes life much simpler, there's plenty other ways to contact me if it's important.....it never is.

I’ve got a ‘do it yourself kit’ for that. If I’m talking to a real person, I let them prattle on for a bit then give them a really long, loud blast from my referees whistle, which sits beside my landline phone. For some reason, most of the scam calls I get are on that phone.

Also, if it’s really important. Leave a message with your number. I’ll call you back at my leisure.
