Me and my mates were just discussing this and didn’t realise how big a deal finishing 3rd would be this season
If either of the old firm win the Scottish cup or if it isn’t played, 3rd place will see themselves in the Europa league play off round next season.
Win that and you’re in the Europa league groups. Lose that and you still get into the European conference league group stages. So regardless of the result if you finish 3rd this season and providing the old firm win the Scottish or it isn’t played, you’re guaranteed European group stage football.
That’s a massive incentive.
In fact unless any team below 6th place win the Scottish cup, 1st to 5th in the league are guaranteed to get into Europe

Was speaking to my mate about this last night. Not sure we have the squad to cope with that many games at the moment but it'd be brilliant having a European game to look forward to every other week till Xmas. Obviously it'd be a big boost for the coffers as well.
Beat them Saturday and it gives us 5pts on them, I realise they have a game in hand but it's against Celtic and while it's not beyond the realms of possibility they win that it's still unlikely.

Didn't realise that. It would be fantastic to guarantee regular European football next season, especially if it's deemed safe enough for us to go and watch.

If we get into a position of guaranteeing the group stages of the Conference League then I think the club will invest further and bring more quality in. I wouldn’t be surprised if the club have told Ryan and Kevin that they can leave at the end of the season should the right bid come in, but then again the prospect of playing in Europe may encourage them to stay at least another 6 months.

3rd has never been more important, akin to a cup win even (certainly more lucrative)
It would help us immensely when recruiting/keeping players in the summer too..Imagine being able to offer Kevin Nisbet European football until Christmas, for example.
Would also give us the edge when wrestling with Hearts for the same players.

Is this conference league a new thing? I've not heard of some of the teams in the europa leauge as it is! There are so many groups in that competition!

The guarantee of European football in the group stages could be the key to get guys like Irvine, Newell and Marciano to sign longer contracts and also attract better players in the summer that will have good options - Alan Campbell etc.

I'm not sure that last bit is right, but happy to be corrected.
The EL playoff spot goes to the cup winner, so if we finished 3rd and aberdeen 4th, but aberdeen won the cup, they would get the guaranteed european football.
Edit: sorry I misread what you were saying. You're right that 1st to 5th would be in europe.

No confirmation yet, but conference league prize money likely to be similar (slightly less?)than europa league. So, if hibs finish third and the old firm win the Scottish cup, at the very least we are looking at group stage euro football.
That means (based on current europa league prize money) £2.5 million straight off just for being there, then £500k a win or £170k a draw. So you’d be hoping for min £3mill even if we don’t do particularly well (6 games) and before ticket (COVID allowing) tv rights or sponsorship etc.
That very much brings us in line with (or greater than.) the spending of Aberdeen and hearts.
Recruitment also becomes easier, with the attraction of guaranteed group stage euro football.
3rd is massive for us this year. Get this and we could have a financial platform to maintain best of the rest for the medium term. Success brings more euro money which brings more success.

I think the Conference league prize money will be a good bit less than the EL, its Uefa's third tier competition. So just as EL prize money isnt the same as Champions League money then Conference money wont be like EL money. Not to be sniffed at of course but I think it will be lower than the Europa League.

There will be eight groups of four teams, followed by knockout round play-offs, the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
The eight group winners automatically go through to the last 16. Additional knockout round play-offs will then be played before the round of 16 between the eight group runners-up and the third-ranked teams of the UEFA Europa League groups.
First qualifying round: 8 & 15 July
Second qualifying round: 22 & 29 July
Third qualifying round: 5 & 12 August
Play-offs: 19 & 26 August
Group stage: 16 & 30 September, 21 October, 4 & 25 November, 9 December
Knockout round play-offs: 17 & 24 February
Round of 16: 10 & 17 March
Quarter-finals: 7 & 14 April
Semi-finals: 28 April & 5 May
Final: 25 May (National Arena, Tirana)

Although it will be less I can't see it being by much!! There comes a point where clubs wont find it financially viable to play in it!!

If we win the Scottish Cup or finish 3rd with Celtic/Rangers winning the Scottish Cup we will enter the Europa League play offs (19th & 26th August), guaranteed a place in the Conference League group stages if we lose.

At first glance isn't 2nd a bigger incentive for Champions League?
But, what round does the runner up enter Champions League Qualification and what round of Europa League Qualifying would they enter if they lose? Finishing 3rd might actually be better than finishing 2nd realistically as it guarantees group stage football. A bit convoluted but would be interesting to know.

Finishing 2nd would get you into the second qualifying round of the Champions League, lose that and you go into the third qualifying round of the Europa League, lose that and you go into the Conference League play off.
However, if you win second qualifying round in the Champions League you are guaranteed to be in the Europa Conference league group stages at minimum.

Hibs playing groupstage football, with a genuine chance of getting out, and fans back at games, would be one of my favourite Hibs supporting moments ever. I really hope we can do it.
This getting into Europe is a bit overhyped, we get a qualifier against a Scandinavian team if we win that another qualifier. It’s not like we are getting to the actual Europa league

Round 3 would’ve been last week, Round 4 would have been in 2 weeks, both have been cancelled and a barrowload of round 2 games have still to be played due to the weather. There’s next to no chance of the cup being finished this season.

I'm not sure that is correct now (I did earlier). According to the wiki page the losers of the EL 3rd go into the ECL play off round before the group stages.
You either have to win 2 (3rd & playoff) rounds for EL groups or lose 1 win 1 for ECL groups.
The 10 teams eliminated at the EL playoff stage do get auto ECL group places.
Might be wrong but thats how it reads to me.

Scotland’s 3rd runner goes into the Europa league play off, not the 3rd round (due to their not being a previous Conference league winner).

I think we, as supporters, over estimate the draw of European football for players. I can pretty much guarantee you that none of the players mentioned would give up a more lucrative offer elsewhere on the basis that they’ll miss out on a few games of football abroad.

European football excites us fans but if Porto can treble his wages he'd happily swap that for slugging it out for Millwall away to Barnsley on a damp Tuesday night.
There's not a single player who would think differently.

"The Scottish Cup winners will now enter the Europa League in the final play-off round and if they fail to get through they will automatically drop into the Conference group stage, which will give them European football until Christmas."
It's part of a Tom English article about McInnes.
"It won't be rock 'n' roll opposition, but it will be lucrative enough. Aberdeen's own estimation is that the slot could be worth around £4m to whoever gets it."
I think our normalised turnover is about £10m so it could clearly make a massive difference to Hibs if we managed tu get 3rd place.

Wont be that for ECL, EL was 2.9m€ last year (thats without any win or qualifying bonuses. The competition has been split with less in the EL but more teams over the 2 comps I think.
Also sure I read UEFA have had to take a hit on TV revenues and are spreading the losses over 5 years. Itll still be a great boost but I dont see £4m as a base figure is a lot higher than what will be on offer.
