Fantastic to see him back, was solid against rangers and by reading the match thread today, aside from scoring a good goal he was solid. For a guy who probably thought he wouldnt kick a ball this season I bet he is absolutley delighted to be at the heart of the defence again
A good solid hibby and a cup winning legend, the young guns must love having this guy around, well done Darren 🇳🇬💚🇳🇬

Tam McManus' comparison to Sauzee was maybe a bit over the top (although it was more about age and suchlike) but his experience in being able to read the game and get in the right place at the right time has settled the defence after a shaky wee period. Let's hope it continues.

The obvious thing is that if Daz (instead of Porteous) and Doidge had played in the semi final we wouldn't have lost the 2 headed set piece goals.
Porteous probably needs to drop back into the side on Tuesday to give Daz's knees a rest after 2 tough games in 3 days.

Daz won’t be able to play every few days, I doubt his legs would cope, but playing the three at the back McGinn can drop out for a rest, Porteous can come in, knowing they can get dropped should give them the boot up the arse as well.

Been absolutely brilliant the past 2 games and it was fitting for him to score today.

That was a proper captians display from Darren. Courage and character. That rubs off on the other players. Gutted he's not a few years younger as you can't put a price on that today. I hope Ryan Porteous was watching closely.

Darren is fine in games like Wednesday where lack of pace doesn't really matter a a lot, its about being solid at the back.
Its games where you are mostly on the front foot trying to break teams down that he tends to get caught out by the long hoof over the top. That's why he fell out of favour.
He's been a great servant to the club but he's not the long term answer at centre half.

I just feel far more at ease at high balls into the box with Mcgregor in there, he’s a defender first and foremost, first priority is to win the ball and clear the danger.....and he’s the best defender at the club at that job.

If we keep him at the centre of a three and not in a two I think that keeps him protected from being exposed and lets us utilise his best strengths when marking at close quarters and defending in the box. The leadership he brings i think is a big help us well. Really good couple of performances and does ease some fears over our depth in the area if Porteous stays.

I’m not saying that he should have been ever present this season but surely he should have been involved more than he has been. Is this something to do with a young manager stamping his own authority on the team and not wanting senior players from a more success team having too much say?

Against Rangers lack of pace could be an issue. Very good in a 3 but can also play in a 2. Thought was superb in both games and defended brilliantly particularly in relation to set pieces.

Certainly isn't slow and what he does provide is aggression leadership and defensive quality which compliments other players we have. Still an important member of our squad.

McGregor is one of the quickest centre backs I've seen at Hibs. Pace shouldn't be an issue although he is slower than he was. His pace is what allowed him to be so aggressive, always winning first balls.

I think Ross wants to progress the likes of Porteous and Doig as they are the future of the team and will be profitable for us, they are also decent players so still good enough to earn a starting spot. There have been times this season I felt as though Stevenson should have played instead of Doig and McGregor has fully earned his opportunity to come back in the last couple of games.
Sad to see David Gray not involved but McGinn has made that position his own this season.

If only he was 25.
I said yesterday what a difference having a leader on the park makes performance wise and it shows when Daz plays. Quite happy to see him step in when required. Long term answer - no, but he clearly has proven me and a few others wrong who had written him off.

Its not really difficult to see why he hasn't played. Firstly, he hasn't been particularly good in the last 18 months or so when he has played. Secondly, Hanlon is the best footballer of our centre backs and since Ross has came in has been generally very good. He is also the only leftie. Ryan started the season really well and is a real long term option if he continues to improve. He'll either move for good money or be a great player for Hibs. Hanlon and Porteous both done very well up until the Ross County game and there was no reason to bench either of them.
Nothing to do with a young manager etc. Plenty of senior players have played plenty of games.

Nothing fancy about him.
Wins his headers, wins his tackles and gives the ball to someone better.
You see at times he wins the ball and there’s heaps of space to break into, he knows that’s not his game though and steps five yards into the space and gives it to someone better so he can keep his position.
You can also see how the whole team are more organised with him in the squad.
Fair play to Ross trusting him and giving him a go when I admit, I thought he was done.

The thing is, Darren is genuinely a hard laddie..........what you don't get it finesse you get back real toughness in spades. Opposition players hate playing against him. Not wishing to turn the thread, but not many would have the same opinion playing against Paul and Ryan.
I remember speaking to Don Cowie after the game at Tynecastle, and the replay at Easter Road (in the cup) a few seasons ago and he said he had never been hit as hard by a player in his career............he looked and sounded genuinely shaken by it. And it was a fair challenge too :agree:
